It was routine for me. I aimed my laser pointer at the screen during a Powerpoint presentation. This time, it didn't work! Where's the red dot? I was disappointed, but went on talking.

It turned out that a battery had corroded inside the pointer, to the extent that I couldn't even remove the battery!

So, I went to various stores, looking for a new pointer. I discovered that most laser pointers are now built into remote controls for data video projectors! I couldn't find a cheap pointer in a store that sells electronics or office supplies.

I finally went to a pet store and purchased a $5 cat toy! I'm back in business and ready to speak again this morning. Whew!

I didn't know what my new cat toy might do to the sensor of my point-and-shoot, but I decided to take the risk. Here I am, and the camera's fine! I also did nothing to enhance the color or texture of this photo; this is how it turned out.

Now, back to public speaking! We'll see if the cats come running. HSS, everyone!

Got my new laser pen in the mail today!

As soon as it was dark enough I took it out for a spin around Danbo.

It made him dizzy :)

Loving the experiments with lights and strobes!

Oh world of color, how impossible it is to accurately capture your beauty, splendor and scale.

First time I got to shoot World of Color with my Tamron lens, it was pretty cool, though next time I'm bringing a plastic bag for the body. I was constantly wiping the whole thing down with a rag- and the viewfinder was clouding up like it was nobody's business.

Also, there's no point in doing Fireworks Friday when you want to post this.

Enjoy, and have a safe fun weekend!

June 2019. Pentax Espio and expired Colorama 400ASA film.

I put the camera on self-timer, with no flash, and I was inside in the evening when the light was low. I then pulled out the laser pointer and shone it all around the room - when the self-timer opened the shutter it captured the random patterns I was making.

This image shows one of the four Unit Telescopes that make up ESO’s Very Large Telescope (VLT) at Paranal. Each of the 8.2-metre telescopes was given a name in the Mapuche language spoken by indigenous people from the Southern Chile. The Unit Telescope in this image is called Yepun, which means Venus.

The smaller telescope beside Yepun is one of four Auxiliary Telescopes that have a diameter of 1.8 metres. These can be combined with the Unit Telescopes to make the Very Large Telescope Interferometer (VLTI).

Yepun is equipped with the Laser Guide Star Facility that is caught in action in this picture. The laser beam’s colour is precisely tuned to energise a layer of sodium atoms in the atmosphere which creates a small bright spot — an artificial star. This star can be used as a reference to work out how much the atmosphere is distorting the light from actual stars — a process called adaptive optics — which helps to develop clear images.

Above Yepun you can see part of the Milky Way galaxy stretching across the southern sky. The brighter regions on the lower right correspond to the Large Magellanic Cloud and Small Magellanic Cloud — two satellite galaxies of the Milky Way.

Laser levels point or rotate to create a reference point, line, or plane, and are used in construction to determine and set the elevation of construction elements. Laser levels facilitate accurate and fast level operations over a wide area. Once set up, leveling work can be performed by one person.

This is the rather strange window of a facility that performs laser eye surgery. Although not shown here, it has (or at least had) an operating position in the facility window where pedestrians can actually observe the surgery in progress.

The window features photos of glamorous women and Borzoi dogs, as well as the doctor's red Mustang convertable with plate DRLASEK.

Bebb's of Llantwit Fardre, South Wales only tended to keep coaches for a couple of years, so this shot when it was eighteen months old probably meant it would soon be moved on. It's B44 DNY a Bedford YNT with Duple Laser Mark 1 bodywork, one of eight bought for the 1985 season. It's seen on the M5 near Exeter in October 1986.

Bebb's would eventually sell out to Veolia who used the company as the basis for what would become a large and widespread operation throughout South Wales before getting into a mess and going pear-shaped.
