Keeping active, even for a 14 yr. old dog is important. She loves to chase the laser light.
Young people make sounds by moving their hands and arms through light beams in the laser room at Meow Wolf in Santa Fe, New Mexico.
Thursday 18 August, Allgäu Public Observatory - Germany
As ESO tested the new Wendelstein laser guide star unit by shooting a powerful laser beam into the atmosphere, one of the region’s intense summer thunderstorms was approaching — a very visual demonstration of why ESO’s telescopes are in Chile, and not in Germany. Heavy grey clouds threw down bolts of lightning as I took timelapse photographs of the test for ESOcast 34. With purely coincidental timing I snapped this photograph just as lightning flashed. Although the storm was still far from the observatory, the lightning appears to clash with the laser beam in the sky.
Laser guide stars are artificial stars created 90 kilometres up in the Earth’s atmosphere using a laser beam. Measurements of this artificial star can be used to correct for the blurring effect of the atmosphere in astronomical observations — a technique known as adaptive optics.
The laser in this photograph is a powerful one, with a 20-watt beam, but the power in a bolt of lightning peaks at a trillion (one million million) watts, albeit for just a fraction of a second!

The sun cut across the skyline like a laser and illuminated the low and fast moving cloud for about 3 minutes.

Prague street scene revisited. The idea was suggested to me on March 15, 2024 by Chantal Labonté's lighting for the ballet NEBE staged by Les Grands Ballets canadiens. "Nebe", a Czech word (hence the relevance of this photo, taken in the Czech Republic), which in this case evoked "the duality between earth and sky", also means "paradise". During this show, the dancers crossed narrow, semi-transparent laser light partitions on stage. It was brilliant.
In this photo, I tried my hand at representing a laser partition projected onto the earth from the sky (blue, of course... as these bedroom windows!). Then I played with straight lines, intersections, triangles and parallels. A real (playful) geometry workshop! The resulting image suggests that the love embodied by this couple "transfigures" the night, as in Schoenberg's work...

The green laser was not accompanied by a pounding beat. It might have started at 11:30pm but a bush dance party was not its source and entertainment not its goal.
Beaming across the valley in an erratic pattern, the light is a deterrent for birds. Growers of crops susceptible to damage from an avian source report significant harvest gains when the lasers are used. This can offset start-up costs, especially for high value crops.
The green lasers are viewed as a humane alternative to poisons and shotguns and more neighbourly than propane canons and squawk boxes.
Me resultó muy difícil iluminar la aguja, sin afectar la oscuridad necesaria para que aparezca el rayo laser. Inspirada en el asombroso trabajo de Helen (toomanytribbles), si no conocen su creatividad, no dejen de visitar su galería.
It was very difficult to illuminate the needle, without affecting the darkness needed to show the laser beam. Inspired by the amazing work of Helen (toomanytribbles), if you don't know her creativity, stop and visit her stream.
It was windy and foggy last night to see the laser light show. Not easy to snap photos. These are couple quick clikcs of the light. They will have the lights on tonight but not sure the fog weather conditions.
Please come by to see it in person.

Method: A laser pointer (confiscated from my son 14 years ago for shining it in my eyes) was taped onto a heavy spanner which was then tied onto a piece of string about 1.5 metres long. The string was tied to a lamp shade attached to the ceiling so that the laser was about one metre from the floor and pointing down. A clothes peg was used to hold the on/off switch on the laser. I then closed the curtains in the room to make it as dark as possible. It helped that this was shot at night. The scariest bit was then placing my precious camera underneath the spanner, on its back pointing upwards and swinging the laser/spanner assembly in a long loop. I then released the shutter in bulb mode and left the room. I tried various durations and found that around two minutes was best. The first attempt was rubbish because the laser is very directional light and only showed on the photo when it was pointing directly downwards. So, I put a piece of sellotape over the laser to diffuse it. This made it visible for the full swing.
