After searching in vain through my attic for an old Coleman camping lantern for this week's "Lantern" theme, I figured I would take a pass on this week's Flickr Friday. Then I went to lunch at the Wicker Crab Pot in Chesapeake. What did they have as a decoration in the Men's Room?? A lantern on a wicker table!!!

Hoi An lanterns are a hallmark of Hoi An in Quang Nam, a province in the central region of Vietnam. oi An is famous for its dazzling lanterns, which light up the streets, temples, and riversides with a stunning array of colors and designs.
Lanterns can be seen all around George Town's streets and parks. I do wonder if these lanterns are ever taken down...
When she changed the wording on her sign from "pumpkins" to "jack-o-lanterns," business really took off!

The Chinese lantern plant is basically a herbaceous perennial that can live up to an age of three years. This unique plant has some great qualities apart from its looks. It has the ability to withstand extremely low temperatures exceeding even more than -40C.
Ironically the Chinese lantern plant is not native to the country of China. It was first discovered in Japan. It gets its name from the unique fruit that it produces. The fruit is shaped like a balloon and has a papery texture. It is red in color and known as the calyx. In terms of its appearances it looks exactly like the Chinese lantern craftwork.

Minolta MD Rokkor 50mm 1.2
Aperture was wide open.
I've posted two almost identical photographs of this lantern, in the same position, with the identical lighting, minutes apart, for the purposes of comparing two "vintage style" lenses. This photograph was taken with the Minolta MD Rokkor 50mm 1.2 which I think dates from about 1980.
I was surprised by several aspects of the results. For example, the Minolta, despite being easier to focus, renders slightly softer focus. If you compare the bird's wing on the sliver control dial on the lantern (if you magnify and look closely) you'll see that the feathers in the Minolta photo sort of melt to mush, whereas the feathers on the Meyer Optik seem more distinct. I would have bet money on the opposite being true before this little experiment.
Overall, I personally like the softer overall feel of the Minolta photo; it's got more light and a more pleasing effect. However, I admire the lantern in the Meyer Optik photo.
Please leave a comment to let me know which you prefer. Thanks!
One from an evening with my camera club at Tynemouth. Loved the light hitting the metal in the lantern, the diagonal line of the fence and the colours in the sky. Such a simple view, but beautiful.
The first human green lantern, Hal Jordon has a heavy weight on his shoulders. Despite having 'the will to serve', Hal does not yet feel confident enough to operate on Earth. Inside him is a tiny sliver of fear. Fear that he will mess up. Fear he will bring trouble to his home. Fear he will inadvertently hurt those he cares for.
Instead, he chooses to broaden his horizons and only visits Earth occasionally. He is more like a space cop than a superhero.
A few lantern bugs /lanternflies (Pyrops) of Peninsular Malaysia and Borneo. These are probably some of my most favorite genera of invertebrates. Enjoy!
