Eco park Sigiriya is also known as “Hurulu park”, “Sigiriya wildlife reserve” or “Habaran national park”. It is a wildlife reserve located near Habarana on the A9 road. Eco park Sigiriya is a biosphere reserve since January 1977. The wildlife reserve is a habitat for a large number of wild elephants and therefore it is one of the best places to spot wild elephants on the island.
Eco park Sigiriya is a good alternative for Minneriya and Kaudulla national parks, especially in the rainy season.

Yala National Park is the most visited and second largest national park in Sri Lanka. The park consists of five blocks, two of which are now open to the public, and also adjoining parks. The blocks have individual names such as, Ruhuna National Park (block 1) and Kumana National Park or 'Yala East' for the adjoining area. It is situated in the southeast region of the country, and lies in Southern Province and Uva Province. The park covers 979 square kilometres (378 sq mi) and is located about 300 kilometres (190 mi) from Colombo. Yala was designated as a wildlife sanctuary in 1900, and, along with Wilpattu was one of the first two national parks in Sri Lanka, having been designated in 1938. The park is best known for its variety of wild animals. It is important for the conservation of Sri Lankan elephants, Sri Lankan leopards and aquatic birds.
Time to head home and take refuge in the safe place of my book shelf - the two surviving wooden elephants from Sri Lanka. The rest is memory.

Pinnawala has the largest herd of captive elephants in the world. In 2023, there were 71 elephants, including 30 males and 41 females from 3 generations, living in Pinnawala.[1]
The orphanage was founded to care and protect the many orphaned unweaned wild elephants found wandering in and near the forests of Sri Lanka. It was established in 1975 by the Sri Lanka Department of Wildlife Conservation (DWC).[2]
On 31 August 2021, a 25 year old elephant named Surangi gave birth to twin male baby elephants at the orphanage.[3][4] It also marked the first instance of the birth of twin elephants in Sri Lanka after a gap of 80 years since 1941.
I recently visited the beautiful Sri Lanka. On my journey through the country, I especially admired the rich flora and fauna. I have also met many nice and friendly people during this time. It is a wonderful country with a very nice friendly population. Here begins my little Sri Lanka series.

Hiking through the Sinharaja rainforest I met this beautiful creature, It is the largest agamid endemic to Sri Lanka and lives in dense wet zone forests. It is called the hump-nosed lizard, hump snout lizard or the lyreshead. Beautiful!
Colombo, de facto capital of Sri Lanka. The sheltered location on a peninsula + a protected natural harbor made the formerly small fishing village a sought-after trading port for the spice island.
After independence in 1948, Colombo also became the political center of the island.
