Second Street, Brompton
Brompton resident Edward Michael Thulborn was a man who attracted his share of trouble with the law. Born in 1896, in 1914 he was convicted of using indecent language and drunkenness at a picture show. Convicted in 1921 of assaulting police at Gawler, in 1926 he alleged that police had accepted bribes from him resulting in the government instigating a lengthy Bribery Commission.
Another charge of assaulting police in 1939 was dismissed when Thulborn was able to demonstrate that it was unlikely.
In 1949 Thulborn was back in court charged with jury rigging. At the time he was operating a fruit shop on Second St in Brompton Park Extension.

Monument Valley (Navajo: Tsé Biiʼ Ndzisgaii, pronounced [tsʰépìːʔ ǹtsɪ̀skɑ̀ìː], meaning "valley of the rocks") is a region of the Colorado Plateau characterized by a cluster of sandstone buttes, with the largest reaching 1,000 ft (300 m) above the valley floor. The most famous butte formations are located in northeastern Arizona along the Utah–Arizona state line. The valley is considered sacred by the Navajo Nation, the Native American people within whose reservation it lies.
Monument Valley has been featured in many forms of media since the 1930s. Famed director John Ford used the location for a number of his Westerns. Film critic Keith Phipps wrote that "its five square miles [13 km2] have defined what decades of moviegoers think of when they imagine the American West".

History
Before human existence, the Park was once a lowland basin. For hundreds of millions of years, materials that eroded from the early Rock Mountains deposited layer upon layer of sediment which cemented a slow and gentle uplift, generated by ceaseless pressure from below the surface, elevating these horizontal strata quite uniformly one to three miles above sea level. What was once a basin became a plateau.
Natural forces of wind and water that eroded the land spent the last 50 million years cutting into and peeling away at the surface of the plateau. The simple wearing down of altering layers of soft and hard rock slowly revealed the natural wonders of Monument Valley today.
From the visitor center, you see the world-famous panorama of the Mitten Buttes and Merrick Butte. You can also purchase guided tours from Navajo tour operators, who take you down into the valley in Jeeps for a narrated cruise through these mythical formations. Places such as Ear of the Wind and other landmarks can only be accessed via guided tours. During the summer months, the visitor center also features Haskenneini Restaurant, which specializes in both native Navajo and American cuisines, and a film/snack/souvenir shop. There are year-round restroom facilities. One mile before the center, numerous Navajo vendors sell arts, crafts, native food, and souvenirs at roadside stands.

My daughter & son & their children live in distant parts of the country, & lead busy lives, so the times when we can all get together are rare. We had a grand family reunion this summer, & this photo reminds me of something one of my writing teachers said. That every family has its own language -- like a short hand code -- based on shared history & family lore & jokes. So here's my family (almost all of them) with a new family joke, good-naturedly indulging my whim by posing on one of Durango's tilting benches.
Harlech is a seaside resort and community in Gwynedd within the historic boundaries of Merionethshire in north-west Wales. It lies on Tremadog Bay in the centre of Gwynedd, within the Snowdonia National Park. Of a population of 1,447, 51 per cent habitually speak the Welsh language. Its best-known landmark, Harlech Castle, was begun in 1283 by Edward I of England, captured by Owain Glyndwr, and later served as a stronghold for Henry Tudor. It was built next to the sea, but coastline changes mean it now lies on a cliff face, about half a mile (800 m) inland. The town has developed housing estates in the low town area and hillside housing in the high town around the shopping street, church, and castle. The two are linked by a steep, winding road called "Twtil".

Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque (Arabic: جامع الشيخ زايد الكبير) is located in Abu Dhabi, the capital city of the United Arab Emirates and is considered to be the key for worship in the country.
Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque was initiated by the late president of the United Arab Emirates (UAE), HH Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, who wanted to establish a structure which unites the cultural diversity of Islamic world, the historical and modern values of architecture and art. His final resting place is located on the grounds beside the same mosque. The mosque was constructed from 1996 to 2007. It is the largest mosque in the United Arab Emirates and the eighth largest mosque in the world. The mosque site is equivalent to the size five football fields approximately.
As the country's grand mosque, it is the key place of worship for Friday gathering and Eid prayers. During Eid it can be visited by more than 40,000 people.
Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque Center (SZGMC) offices are located in the east minarets. SZGMC manages the day to day operations, as a place of worship and Friday gathering and also a center of learning and discovery through its educational cultural activities and visitor programs.
The library, located in the north/east minaret, serves the community with classic books and publications addressing a range of Islamic subjects: sciences, civilization, calligraphy, the arts, coins and includes some rare publications dating back more than 200 years. In reflection of the diversity of the Islamic world and the United Arab Emirates, the collection comprises material in a broad range of languages including Arabic, English, French, Italian, Spanish, German and Korean.
I love the names given to many of the Maritime areas and this one is no exception. The colors that remained after the sun had set where pastel blue and bright intense orange. Nature sure can give us a terrific show in the evening. Hey, what is the only word in the English language that has no rhyming word? Orange.

Your frontal composition is perfect for this building because it was conceived as a demonstration of strict order and modular clarity. Designed by Angiolo Mazzoni in the language of Italian Rationalism, the post-and-telegraph headquarters asserts itself on Via Roma with a deep, temple-like portico of ten colossal columns and a heavy entablature. Behind that disciplined façade is a reinforced-concrete frame clad in locally quarried Billiemi stone, laid out with rigorous symmetry around two side courtyards. The frontality of your shot heightens the building’s serial rhythm—the equal intercolumniation, the stacked horizontal bands, and the measured void of the portico—which are all about efficiency, legibility, and civic monumentality. Even small details were designed for coherence, from the custom metalwork to the calibrated lighting, and the entrance sequence pivots around a large elliptical staircase that dramatizes movement within an otherwise tightly ordered plan.

The Animistic Vision in Education and Human Development
The place of animism in education has been evolving: it has ceased to be understood merely as a childhood “cognitive error” and has come to be recognized as a symbolic language capable of supporting freedom of learning, autonomy, and the child's connection with the world.
Today, animistic thinking can be seen as a bridge between children's imagination and the progressive development of critical, scientific, and relational thinking.
Pedagogical Perspective of Animism
In early childhood education, animism can function as a form of symbolic language that allows children to explore reality with curiosity, empathy, and imagination. Instead of being corrected immediately, it can be pedagogically mediated to promote meaningful learning.
Mediation tool: teachers can take advantage of the child's tendency to “give life” to objects and natural phenomena, introducing scientific and biological concepts in a playful way.
Respect for the stage of development: following the contributions of Jean Piaget, modern approaches recognize that children go through phases in which they confuse activity with life, gradually advancing towards a more objective understanding of living beings.
Holistic learning: animism favors the perception that the elements of the environment are interconnected, strengthening a deeper and more sensitive environmental education.
Freedom of learning and autonomy
The recognition of animistic thinking creates an environment in which the child feels authorized to formulate their own explanations about the world. This freedom stimulates curiosity, personal expression, and the gradual construction of autonomy.
Free exploration: values fundamental childhood rights, such as playing, exploring, imagining, and expressing ideas.
Development of agency: by interacting with the world as if it had intentions, the child develops empathy and a sense of responsibility for their actions.
Relationships with the non-human: animism allows for the creation of new ways of relating to animals, plants, rivers, objects, and natural phenomena, challenging excessively rigid or exclusively rationalistic teaching models.
Enchantment and reflection: imagination becomes a driving force for learning, allowing the child to learn through enchantment, investigation, and reflection, and not just repetition.
Animism in science education
In science education, animism can cease to be treated as a simple "childish belief" and become a pedagogical tool for empathy. It helps students in the early years develop ethical and environmental sensitivity even before mastering complex theoretical concepts.
1. Attributing agency to living beings
Instead of presenting plants and animals as static objects, the animistic approach highlights their activity, interdependence, and relationship with the environment.
The "will" of the plant: discussing how a young plant "seeks" light or directs its roots towards water and nutrients.
Plant communication: presenting relationships between fungi, roots, and trees as a network of communication and cooperation in the ecosystem.
Cooperation and symbiosis: exploring examples such as bees and flowers, the plover and the alligator, or lichens, showing how different living beings depend on each other.
A simple example is the relationship between bees and flowers: the bee collects nectar to produce honey and, as it moves between flowers, carries pollen on its legs, contributing to plant reproduction.
2. Personification to understand natural cycles
The personification of abiotic elements, such as water, rocks, or wind, can help the child visualize invisible or abstract natural processes.
The journey of the drop: creating narratives about the water cycle, representing evaporation, condensation, and rain as stages of a journey.
Ecological roles: assigning symbolic functions, such as "forest cleaners," to decomposers, facilitating the understanding of their role in the balance of ecosystems.
3. Interspecies Empathy
Animism can support the construction of an ecological ethic by bringing the child closer to other forms of life and reducing the distance between the "self" and the "other."
Animal perspective: propose activities such as "What if I were a bee?", leading the child to think about what the animal sees, seeks, and needs to survive.
Rights of nature: introduce the idea that rivers, forests, and other natural elements deserve care and protection.

Lily Wild lives among a collection of origami flowers which she has come to appreciate in a way that we can't. However, in her own language of love, she sends her thanks to her new friend, Dorothy, who seems to understand the power of plants.
The meaning of the four-petal flower in feng shui often relates to luck, happiness, and prosperity. The four petals are seen as a symbol of perfection and balance, with each petal representing an essential aspect of life: love, health, wealth, and career.
All of us in the Bigg family thank you Nancy, and your lovely Dorothy and Zyanya, for hosting a fantastic month.

‘Char’in Bengali language means ‘four’ and ‘Bangla’ in Bengali language has been derived from Bengal.On the other side of Murshidabad across River Bhagirathi, there lies a complex in Baronagar Ajimgange, surrounded by four temples, known as Char Bangla Temple. Just before entering temple complex you will find the Bhabaniswar temple of Shiva. Char Bangla temples were built under the patronage of Rani Bhabani in the years 1755-1760. It is an example of one of the best ornamental brick work in Bengal. She came from Nator (Now in Bangladesh). Rani Bhabani was a pious lady and she was also a loyal follower of Lord Shiva. So she constructed or patronized all the temples dedicating to Lord Shiva. The temple walls are the height of examples of exquisite art work of terracotta reflecting Hindu mythological stories in a unique style of it own. The works depicts about the daily life incidents to the North side temple at the down two rows. And others are about the epics “The Ramayana” and “The Mahabharata”. It is a must heritage tour in Bengal for world tourists having interests in archeology, art and history. It is said that Rani Bhavani wanted to build 108 temples here at Baronagar on the shore of the Ganges to lift the status of this settlement to that of Varanasi. [Terracotta, from the Latin terra cocta, is a type of earthenware, and a clay-based unglazed or glazed ceramic, where the fired body is porous. Terracotta is used as a medium in sculpture, as in the Terracotta Army and Greek terracotta figurines. Glazed architectural terracotta and its unglazed version as exterior surfaces for buildings were used in Asia for some centuries before becoming popular in the West in the 19th century. ]
MURSHIDABAD – A HISTORICAL PLACE.
Murshidabad is a city in Murshidabad district of West Bengal state in India. The city is located on the eastern bank of the Bhagirathi, a tributary of the Ganges River.
HISTORY
Murshidabad was a town and district of British India, in the Bengal Presidency. In the Mughal period it was the capital of Bengal.
In 1704, Murshid Quli Khan, the Diwan of Bengal under Aurangzeb transferred the capital from Dacca (now Dhaka inBangladesh), and renamed the city Murshidabad after his own name. In 1716, he attained the title of Nawab (ruler) of the Subah(province) of Bengal, and Murshidabad became his capital.
The family of Jagat Seth maintained their position as state bankers at Murshidabad from generation to generation. Even after the conquest of Bengal by the British, Murshidabad remained for some time the seat of administration. Warren Hastings removed the supreme civil and criminal courts to Calcutta in 1772, but in 1775 the latter courts were brought back to Murshidabad again. In 1790, under Lord Cornwallis, the entire revenue and judicial staffs were moved to Calcutta. The town was still the residence of the nawab, who ranked as the first nobleman of the province with the style of Nawab Bahadur of Murshidabad, instead of Nawab Nazim of Bengal. The Hazarduari Palace, dating back to 1837, is a magnificent building. The city still bears memories of Nawabs with other palaces, mosques, tombs, and gardens, and retains such industries as carving in ivory, gold and silver embroidery, and silk-weaving.
The city is also famous for producing exotic mango and litchi. A narrow-gauge railway crosses the district, from the East Indian line at Nalhati to Azimganj. Baharampur, the capital of Murshidabad, has grown in importance, population & size; as of 2011 it is the 7th largest city in West Bengal.
Historic places
While it features extensively in history books, the large potential for heritage tourism has been somewhat neglected. Of historic interest are Nizamat Kila (the Fortress of the Nawabs), also known as the Hazaarduari Palace (Palace of a Thousand Doors), built by Duncan McLeod of the Bengal Engineers in 1837, in the Italianate style. It was built in the nineteenth century by architect Duncan Macleod, under the reign of Nawab Nazim Humayun Jah of Bengal, Bihar and Orissa (1824–1838). William Cavendish was the then Governor-General. Now, Hazarduari Palace is the most conspicuous building in Murshidabad. In 1985, the palace was handed over to the Archaeological Survey of India for better preservation.[
The Moti Jhil(Pearl Lake) just to the south of the palace, the Muradbagh Palace and the Khushbagh Cemetery, where the remains of Ali Vardi Khan and Siraj Ud Daulah are interred.
The legacy of Siraj ud-Daulah (1733 – July 2, 1757), was the last independent Nawab of Bengal. He was Iraqi Arab by ethnicity and Shi'ite in religion. The end of his reign marked the start of British East India Company rule over Bengal and later almost all of South Asia. Siraj succeeded his maternal grandfather, Alivardi Khan as the Nawab of Bengal in April 1756 at the age of 23. Betrayed by Mir Jafar, then commander of Nawab's army, Siraj lost the Battle of Plassey on 23 June 1757. The forces of the East India Company under Robert Clive invaded and the administration of Bengal fell into the hands of the Company.
The present Nizamat Imambara was built in 1847 AD by Nawab Nazim Mansoor Ali Khan Feradun Jah. It was built after the fires of 1842 and 1846 which burnt the wooden Imambara built by Nawab Siraj ud-Daulah. This Imambara is said to be the largest one in India.
The Katra Masjid (also known as Katra Mosque) is a mosque and the tomb of Nawab Murshid Quli Khan built between 1723 and 1724. It is located in the north eastern side of the city. Its importance lies not only as a great centre of Islamic learning but also for the tomb of Murshid Quli Khan, who is buried under the entrance staircase. The most striking feature is the two large corner towers having loopholes for musketry. At present it is maintained and protected by the Archaeological Survey of India and the Government of West Bengal.
Bacchawali Tope is a gun, rather cannon which lies in the Nizamat Fort Campus on the garden space between the Nizamat Imambara and the Hazarduari Palace and to the east of the old Madina Mosque. The cannon consists two pieces of different diameters. The cannon was made between the 12th and 14th century, probably by the Mohammeddan rulers of Gaur. It originally lied on the sand banks of Ichaganj. However, it is unknown that how it came in Ichaganj. It was used to protect the city of Murshidabad from north-western attacks. After the 1846 fire of the Nizamat Imambara the Imambara was rebuilt, then after the completion of the new Imambara the cannon was shifted to its present site by Sadeq Ali Khan, the architect of the sacred Nizamat Imambara under the suggestion of Sir Henry Torrens, the then agent of the Governor General at Murshidabad.
I'd heard of a village called Idle in Yorkshire, then found out it had a Working Men's Club. I wondered if there was a sign, suitable for the Flickr 'Sign Sunday' group. Yes there is.
I think I was having a day off school when they did all that noun and verb / grammar stuff. Seriously, I've never 'got' any of those English Language rules / names things, but I'm sure that there's a name for this funny (in my opinion, anyway) combination.
It was a lovely day and Mrs K was 'otherwise engaged', so I hopped on the Kawasaki and rode over for a look. What I hadn't realised was how close Idle was to places that we've been to previously - Saltaire, Bradford, Bingley Five Rise canal locks, Halifax Piece Hall, Haworth etc - a nice ride there. Motorway virtually all the way back which wasn't great, but I made it back in time to watch Manchester City beat Nottingham Forest on TV to reach the FA Cup Final woo hoo.
