I happened to be on a non-photo business trip with my camera, flash, new ballhead, but no tripod.
One trip to Home Depot and $1.23 worth of 3/8" bolt, washers, and nut-- and I have a quadrapod. Ladder already had several holes molded on top, one of which was perfect for mounting the ballhead.
Used this configuration to take several 20sec exposures at night and light painted with my SB-800. I'm 6'6", and could step on first ladder step and have a good view through my D200 and adjust controls just fine.
Mostly stable, but limited in height adjustment. :)
Picture taken with D200 handheld and SB-800 on the left in my outstretched hand.
