Another of the MV Quinsam's many metal abstractions. The freshly-painted black ladder in front of the white metal wall makes for abstract shadows in the late afternoon sun.
Best interpreted in monochrome using a preset in TopazB&W that accentuates textures and contrast.

Nice to know there is one nearby should I happen to be silly enough to walk out on the thin ice. Now if there was just someone to throw it to me.
A roadside waterfall in Great Smoky Mountains National Park flows over multiple levels reminding me of a ladder.
This piece continues my exploration of perspective, but from a place of profound confinement. Where my other works look at moments of anticipation or reflection, "Subterranean Ladder" is about the feeling of being trapped within a moment, looking out. The world is reduced to what can be glimpsed through the narrow spaces of an ascent you cannot make. It is a view from below, a perspective born of darkness.
I was captivated by the geometry of shadow. The overwhelming blackness is not an absence of subject, but the subject itself. It represents the weight of the unknown, the subterranean space of the psyche. The stairs, seen from this angle, cease to be a simple structure for passage and become a cage, a barrier. Yet, through them, there is light. There is the rough texture of the brick wall, a reminder of a world outside this confinement. This work is a dialogue between despair and hope, the oppressive dark and the fractured light that makes it visible. It is about finding the structure, the pattern, and even the beauty, in a moment of being held back.

This brand new Tower will enter service later this week, and unlike its 1997 predecessor, features no tank, hosebed, or crosslays. This unit also marks the debut of the new colors and graphics, meant to make it more distinguishable from the all red apparatus of frequent mutual aid partners such as Columbus and Mifflin Township.
