I have always been a big fan of wine label design. :::loves wine tasting too::: I've been studying wine labels more than normal due to my work on Odonatia's winery, Dark Palms. Platforms and yards used to be littered with discarded or lost wagon labels. Heres a 1974 vintage one found at Temple Meads when "Rail Express Parcels" was a major parcels force. Vehicle M31042 was a Derby built wooden bodied ex LMS bogie brake built in 1940 and withdrawn in 1978..

Cutting printed labels at Smith & Ritchie on a J Greig & Sons Machine
GREIG,(David and John) were printing machine manufacturers. They were founded in Lothian Road where they operated between 1844 and 1861. In 1862 they were listed at the Fountainhall Works, 96 Fountainbridge where they stayed until 1885. 1886-20th Century the Edinburgh Directory lists them at Fountainhouse Works 28-30 Dundee Street, Edinburgh.
Further Notes: Original artwork created by Smith & Ritchie. Smith and Ritchie were established in Edinburgh in 1853. The firm were multi colour offset printers who were specialist suppliers to the food packaging industry. They were located at Amphion Works in Albert Street. In 1963 Smith & Ritchie became the first printing company in Scotland to use a gravure press and produced reel fed work up to five colours. Smith & Ritchie moved to Livingston in 1986 and in 1991 became the first printing firm in Scotland to use a 10 station gravure press.
Smith & Ritchie have subsequently moved out to Livingston and survive today as Amcor Flexibles S & R. Amcor are originally an Australian company and now have operations in 36 countries around the world specialising in many printed products of which the food packaging that Amcor Flexibles S & R is one.
History: Smith & Ritchie were located at 71 Albert Street, Edinburgh.

Label for Betty Boop Jackets. We've recently started adding large woven labels to our licensed jackets, and I absolutely love the pure indulgence of designing them. Pretty much what I say goes. "Hey, design a Baby Boop label". "OK, how about this?" "Great, send it for production" And here's the sample. Sweet.
