Detail of the statue of Cristopher Columbus in Barcelona. This famous statue is placed in Portal de la Pau Square, at the crossroads between the southern end of the Ramblas of Barcelona, Passeig de Colom and Passeig de Josep Carner, in front of the port. The sculptural ensemble, designed by Gaietà Buïgas and inaugurated in 1888 on the occasion of that year’s Universal Exposition in the city, was attended by a big number of artists, including the sculptor Josep Llimona. The bronze statue of Columbus is the work of Rafael Atché, and the four lions at the base were sculpted by Agapit Vallmitjana with the same material. The photograph is taken from Miramar. Behind the statue, we can gaze some of the characteristic architectural structures of the Forum, erected on the occasion of the celebration of the Universal Forum of Cultures in Barcelona in 2004.
