The crush of humanity heading to and from the Ganges through the streets of Haridwar during the Kumbh Mela in 2010 was unimaginable.
And they all want a picture made!

I was in the most holy Hindu city of Haridwar in Uttarakhand, North India, to experience the Kumbh Mela, that most holy gathering of people on the Ganges.
This joyful sadhu with his beads, bells, and bone stick, was my favourite; he certainly lived up to the exhortation to dance like nobody is watching.

A Kumbh Mela – literally a festival of the kumbh – is a mass pilgrimage during which Hindu faithful gather to bathe in a sacred or holy river.
In 2010, about 10 million pilgrims travelled through the streets of Haridwar daily to bathe in the Ganges.

I was in the most holy Hindu city of Haridwar in Uttarakhand, North India, to experience the Kumbh Mela, that most holy gathering of people on the Ganges.
On more than one occasion on that long-ago trip, I was offered a share of pipe by one of the sadhus. In most Indian states, possession of marijuana or hashish is a criminal act, and secular people caught indulging can be subject to harsh penalties. But sadhus – many of whom sit in a smoke haze all day – seem to be exempt.

During the 2010 Kumbh Mela, the Haridwar streets were full of life and people.
On the busiest days, I stayed well away from the bathing ghats themselves, and instead wandered around the arterial roads as pilgrims walked in and out of the city’s centre.
I was caught photographing a lovely entry doorway from outside the front fence by a woman who came out to size me up. Deciding I was harmless, she invited me in for tea!
I then got to make portraits of her beautiful daughters against the rich textures of the outer building.

The Kumbh Mela (or Kumbha Mela) is a Hindu religious festival that is celebrated four times every 12 years in special locations in India.
The 2010 Kumbh Mela was on the Ganges in Haridwar, and the pilgrims came from all over, carrying kumbhs (water pots) or other containers to carry water from the sacred rivers home with them.

Prayagraj Ardh Kumbh Mela, 2019 is the Ardh Kumbh Mela to being held at Triveni Sangam in Allahabad, Uttar Pradesh, India from 15 January to 4 March 2019
According to Hindu mythology, Vishnu dropped drops of amrita (the drink of immortality) at four places, while transporting it in a kumbha (pot). These four places, including Allahabad, are identified as the present-day sites of the Kumbh Mela. The river-side fair at Allahabad is centuries old, but its association with the kumbha myth and a 12-year old cycle dates back to the 19th century. The priests of Allahabad borrowed these concepts from the Haridwar Kumbh Mela and applied it to their local Magh Mela, an annual celebration. The Magh Mela probably dates back to the early centuries CE, and has been mentioned in several Puranas. #kumbhmela #kumbh #prayagraj #ardh #allahabad #2019
