The whole of these caves are excavated in one large bubble of a hill situated in the midst of the immense Krishnagiri forest (now called Sanjay Gandhi National Park). The neighbouring hills are covered with forests but this hill is nearly bare, its immense summit formed by one large rounded mass of compact rock, under which a softer stratum has been washed out by rains, forming natural caves, which improved by art have been approprated as cells.
This is one of the largest carvings of the Buddha in India. See picture below from Oct.2012 visit for size comparison.
The other day when i tried to capture all were restless. But this one was almost sitting in this place for more than 5 minutes. I took shots by being very close to him and in all angles possible he was rock still all the time. Thanks to him!!!
