The newer extended canopy of Köln Hauptbahnhof (Cologne Central Station, Germany) - one of Europe's great railway stations.

Taken on a work visit to Bonn.
This station is an important rail hub for Germany and for this part of Europe. This canopy is the one at the SE end of the station. The main (older) canopy is a huge single arch, out of sight here, to the NW and dates back to 1894 though subsequently rebuilt. The extended canopy here is relatively modern, built to cover platform extensions, and blending well with the main arch. Remarkably, this station is adjacent to the huge medieval cathedral of Cologne and with the great steel bowstring Hohenzollern railway bridge also nearby, there is a striking contrast of styles, function and history.

Köln April 1985: Im April 1985 kam Diema 1827 zur Kleinbahn im Rheinpark. Die Lok vom Typ DS28 wurde 1955 an die Firma H.J. Vygen & Cie., Bonn geliefert und war danach bei der Firma AGROB-Wessel-Servais in Alfter-Witterschlick im Einsatz gewesen.

In 2000, a shopping centre was opened at the entry level of the Köln main station, including the area under the S-Bahn tracks. The colonnade includes 70 shops and restaurants with over 11,500 square metres of retail space and 700 employees. The gondola stalls in the central aisle are a standard feature in all shopping malls worldwise, it seems. (Jan. 2008)

Die Fraktionen CDU, FDP, SPD und Grüne stellten für die Ratssitzung am 19. März gemeinsam einen Antrag auf eine Petition des Stadtrats an die Bundesregierung, in der der Rat fordert, auf deutscher wie auch auf europäischer Ebene Rahmenbedingungen zu schaffen, die die Migration aus Rumänien und Bulgarien nach Deutschland “deutlich reduziert”. Gegen diesen rassistischen Antrag gab es eine Kundgebung vor dem Kölner Rathaus, organisiert von einem Bündnis antirassistischer Gruppen.
