This train was readying to leave Köln on a regional express train. I had a chance to book on such an express as well, but that departure was much later, and the run was closer to 4 hrs. Given the short time at my disposal, I had to pass, and opted for the iCE instead. I was fascinated by the 'Bistro' or restaurant car carried on the ICEs, as seen on the one on the next track. Köln Hauptbahnhof (Cologne Central Station, Germany) - one of Europe's great railway stations.
Selected shot from our return rail journey at the end of our holiday.
Today we left Bonn on a local train, and changed at Cologne (Köln) where we had a little bit of spare time. We then took an ICE train to Brussels (Bruxelles Midi), Belgium, where we changed to a Eurostar train for St.Pancras International, London. By coincidence, this gave me the chance to photograph (and contrast) the great arched canopies of different ages, of three famous railway stations all in one day - Cologne Central, Liège Guillemins and London St.Pancras. By another coincidence, we found we were due to cross paths at St.Pancras with some of the family on an outward trip to France.
This station is an important rail hub for Germany and for this part of Europe. The main arched canopy in the L background dates back to 1894 though subsequently rebuilt. The nearer canopy is relatively modern, built to cover platform extensions, and blending well with the main arch. Remarkably, this station is adjacent to the huge medieval cathedral of Cologne (out of sight here behind us) and makes a striking contrast of styles, function and history. This view was taken from near the top of the cathedral steps, looking at the SE end of the station.

It’s for use on my blog piece Typefaces (Fonts) for People With Reading Disabilities.
A demonstration march by young people in Köln. They are demonstrating for the inclusion of young people with learning disabilities into mainstream education. In Germany people with learning disabilities attend specialist centres that are extremely well-equipped for the most part but are separate from the rest of society.
I am fairly sure that the people taking photographs are from China. There's a good chance they'll have no idea what the march is about as the leaflet that is being handed out is in extremely complex German.
