Toronto's Old City Hall is home now to the Criminal Courts of the Ontario Court of Justice. Old City Hall opened its doors in the autumn of 1899. Its bells have rung the quarter hour ever since from this clock tower, pealing for the first time at midnight Dec. 31, 1900 to welcome in a new century.

There was no denying the fact that Sally Satnav was in a playful mood. Ever since Wadebridge had disappeared from the rear view mirror, our friendly navigation aid had beseeched us to take almost every available left hand turn, many of them along improbable looking single winding lanes flanked with those famous eight feet tall Cornish hedgerows, where meetings with oncoming tractors would be almost guaranteed. And at each turn, Lloyd, who was driving would say “yes?” and I’d respond “no, not this one” as we pushed on along the A39, or the Atlantic Highway as some tourist mandarin had long since dubbed it, giving the road a sense of romantic adventure that the reality doesn’t quite match up to. Like it or not, Sally was going to be foiled in her attempts to take us to Trebarwith Strand via the Delabole turn off for the near vertical switchback descent that we now call Pellatt’s Hill. You’ll have to ask Steve about that if you want to know more. I’d driven that hill once before, on my only other visit here, and I was in no hurry to repeat the experience, especially when there was a perfectly good road down to the sea just a little further on. Besides which, we’d come armed with two flaky steak pasties that had been liberated from my local branch of Cornish Oven, and although they were demonstrating an admirable degree of heat retention during the hour long drive here, we didn’t want to waste any time collecting parts of the underside of Lloyd’s car from the road when we could be tucking into what would already be a late lunch.

Finally, we arrived at the outskirts of Camelford. “Yes?” came the now familiar question from the driver. “Yes” came the required response from the navigator as I consulted the map on my phone one last time. From here it was a short and easy roll down to the coast on a road where we would not need to stop to recover discarded exhaust components as we headed for the object of our third outing together of the week. I was glad that Lloyd was keen to take a trip to Trebarwith. My previous visit had been earlier in the year on the Mayday bank holiday, when I’d been here with non-photographers. Despite this it had turned out to be a more than satisfactory outing, yielding some very pleasing results, and I was eager to come here again with a similarly minded soul whose mission was exactly the same as my own. Two missions in fact – the first of them being to devour those pasties before they began to turn cold. It was the first time I’d had one for some months and I’d forgotten how good they are.

Rumbling stomachs silenced, we made the short walk from the car park down to the water, where there were a couple of hours of happy shooting ahead of us before high tide and last light would come along in short succession, just like those proverbial buses. Unlike my previous visit, we were the only photographers here, a distinct positive in a location where the battleground for space is extremely limited on a high tide. And despite the absence of colour in the sky, the clouds offered plenty of texture on another grey day where the world almost seemed to exist in monochrome. In each shot we took, there was only just the merest hint of blue in the sea to tell us otherwise. We began on the low ledge to the left hand side of this narrow entrance to the water’s edge between the cliffs, more than once being caught as an incoming wave washed up through the channel and surrounded us. Before long, the fact that my boots are made from Gore-tex was no longer relevant. If a wave comes in over your ankles, it doesn’t matter how waterproof your footwear is. At least we’d already picked up our camera bags and strapped them onto our backs before the contents were treated to a bath and very possibly an unwanted sea voyage as well. Soggy socks can be lived with for an afternoon, but salty lenses are rather more of a problem.

By the time they arrived, we’d moved back onto the central platform where the likelihood of further foot spa experiences was much reduced. Firstly, one or two togs appeared at our backs, and before long it seemed as many as ten of us might be competing for space, just as had happened last time I was here. Suddenly a camera appeared uncomfortably close to my left ear. And then another on the right. It seemed that a workshop from Sweden had joined us, the leader of which seemed to be discussing the location with a Londoner, as if he were the local knowledgebase. They were heading for Hartland next, so I told them about Blackchurch Rock, a location to test anyone’s mettle on a winter’s afternoon. Ten togs slipping around on the Toblerone shaped rocks down there together would have been interesting if they’d added it to the itinerary. Somebody suggested we all move back to create more space as the water approached its highest point, but neither Lloyd nor I, who by dint of our early arrival had the ringside seats were ready to engage reverse gear just yet. We’d been here for nearly two hours by now and felt we’d earned these moments. In compromise we crouched for as long as two pairs of knees in their late fifties could manage. The forest of cameras behind us were by now mostly mounted on fully extended tripods, as like a press pack hunting an A list celebrity we clicked away frantically at the view before us.

And just as quickly as they’d arrived, the forest at our backs vanished into thin air, very probably making for the pub that hovers over these rocks on the left hand cliff side. Now it was just us, daylight slipping imperceptibly into the blue hour as the apertures widened and the ISO levels were raised until it was time to call it a day. Another very pleasing day at Trebarwith despite the challenges that come with a high tide shoot here. Once again it had been great to spend time with somebody who was once an acquaintance, but is now a good friend with a shared love of seascape adventures and pasties. And a healthy disregard for instructions offered by errant satellite navigation systems of course.

I was already aware that this car was local, but I was over the moon that I managed to spot it. The Rover Coupe is a truly stunning piece of British history and this one looked amazing for its age.

Those of you who know the story behind the FDH registered cars will know of its significance, but those who don't there's a link below to tell the story. It's currently got 103k on the clock as it's up for sale.

www.rover-coupe.com/rcoc/index.php/knowledgebase/history/...

This is the sort of car I'd show an interest in anyway, but this particular one has a very interesting history.

These 'FDH' 220 Turbo Coupe's were destined for Japan, but something happened and they never made it (or did make it but were never sold there). They sort of disappeared for 3 years until being registered here in the UK in 1998.

All this is news to me, I saw this car whilst out with a workmate who told me of the story behind these 'FDH' Rover's.

The full story is best read here: www.rover-coupe.com/rcoc/index.php/knowledgebase/history/...

This particular car has not been MOT'd since last November, but had only done 37k miles at it's November 2014 test. I think that third brake light in the spoiler was one of the Japanese market additions which was left in when it was brought back to UK-spec. I don't think genuine UK cars have those.

Sadly I can't see what the dealer tag on the plate is, it's too blurry as I took the photo on zoom from across the road.

Kio Zen Garden

To all visitors,

Exploring the park with child avatars is allowed. However,

Please refrain from entering the floor where the Live DJ party is being held. When attending, please use an adult avatar rather than one that could be mistaken for a child or teen.

It is with a heavy heart that we make this request, but this measure is in place to respect Linden's guidelines and to address recent concerns regarding child protection and issues related to pedophilia. These issues are particularly sensitive.

If you are using an animal avatar with explicit features, ensure that these features are not visible in public areas of Moderate regions. Use appropriate coverings or clothing for your avatar to ensure compliance with Moderate region guidelines.

( No weapon, No attack poeple )

We ask for your understanding and cooperation. If cooperation is not possible, we may have to request you to leave the park or, in the worst case, take measures such as a BAN.

Thank you for your understanding and cooperation.

Clan Gregor or Clan MacGregor is a Highland Scottish clan dating back to the early 800s. The clan’s most famous member is the legendary Rob Roy MacGregor of the late 17th and early 18th centuries. The Clan is also known to have been among the first families of Scotland to begin playing the bagpipes in the early 17th century. The bagpipes and the philibeg ( kilt) were outlawed in 1746 by the English and that proscription lasted for thirty six years.

MacGregor Red and Green. A specimen of this tartan appears in the Cockburn Collection, dating from about 1810–1820, now in the Mitchell library in Glasgow. It is one of the tartans labelled in Cockburn's handwriting in 1815. It is titled as MacGregor Murray Tartan by Wilson in the Key pattern book of 1819. James Logan titled it simply as MacGregor in 1831.

The MacGregor (MacGrioghair) main tartan ; * Red, green and white plaid: On red, three stripes of dark green, the middle stripe bisected by white edged with black. This is a well known Scots clan like many with a few variant surnames associated as with most clans. There are eleven tartan variations in Clan Gregor such as the century old 'hunting' tartan, (Cardney) . Four are more authentic see, five if the dancing one . acgsus.org/our-tartan/

The ancestral home of the Clan Gregor was on the borders of Argylshire and Perthshire, in the wild region of the beautiful Scottish Lakes, made so noted by the poems and romances of Sir Walter Scott. As early as the year 1000 the chiefs of the Clan were seated at GlenOrchy in Argylshire, near the border of Perthshire. In the fifteenth century various branches of the clan were established, as MacGregor of Glenstrae in Argyll-shire, and the MacGregors of GlenLyon, of Roro, of Balquhidder and of Balhaldie in Perthshire, etc.

Historical researchers, using some of the oldest manuscripts, including Clan genealogies, the Exchequer Rolls of Scotland, the Ragman Rolls, the Inquisition, the Black Book of the Exchequer, parish cartularies, baptismal records, tax records and many other manuscripts, found the name MacGregor in Argyllshire where they were seated from very ancient times, some say well before the Norman Conquest and the arrival of Duke William at Hastings in 1066 A.D.

Spelling variations of the name MacGregor caused much confusion in research. These changes occurred for a variety of reasons. From time to time the surname was spelled MacGregor, MacGrigor, MacGrioghair (Gaelic), and these changes in spelling occurred, sometimes even between father and son. It was not uncommon for a clansman to be born with one spelling, marry with another, and yet another to appear on his headstone. Sometimes a different English spelling indicated a religious or clan loyalty to a branch or chieftain.

The Dalriadan race of the Hebrides was anciently descended from the early Irish Kings, specifically King Colla da Crioch, who was banished from Ireland in 327 A.D., along with 350 clan chiefs. Even now, there are Scottish highland clans who still call themselves the "Children of Colla". Dalriadan King Fergus Mor MacEarca defeated the Picts, their neighbours to the east, in 498 A.D. Kenneth MacAlpine, first King of Scotland, or Alba, or Caledonia, as it was known, was half Dalriadan, half Pict.

At one time Scotland was called Scotia minor , while Ireland was the original, Scotia major.

The Highland Clans were a different breed. In early history many battles were fought with the Scottish King in Edinburgh or Edinborough. Bonnie Prince Charlie finally rallied their support for his claim to the throne which culminated at Culloden in 1745.

The surname MacGregor emerged as a Scottish Clan or family in their territory of Argyll where they were recorded as a family of great antiquity seated with manor and estates in that shire. They state they were directly descended from King Alpin, High King of Scotland who died in 860 AD.

The MacGregors have always held their superior claim to the throne of Scotland. They were the principal branch of the Siol Alpine, an ancient Clan group descended from King Alpin. For their assistance to King Alexander the MacGregors held vast territories in Argyll and Perthshire. However, their neighbours, the Campbells were jealous of their status and over the next three or four centuries they proceeded to erode the territories and image of the MacGregors. They were first known as "Children of the Mist" and were finally outlawed in 1603, by the English, after their great battle with the Clan Colquhoun.

Rob Roy MacGregor was a Clan hero.

Another chieftain migrated to America where he was scalped by Indians. They were finally formally forgiven by Queen Victoria in 1888. The pine is the Clan's plant badge, their war cry is "Ard-choille" and the pipe music is Ruaig Ghlinne Freoine (Chase of Glen Fruin). One of the tartans is made of red, black and yellow setts. Notable amongst the Clan from early times was Rob Roy MacGregor.

For the next two or three centuries the surname MacGregor played an important role in the highlands and in the affairs of Scotland. However, typical of the ancient conflict between highlander and Edinburgh, many ancient highland clans have still not officially been recognized as clans by the Lord Lyon of Scotland.

Many clansmen of Highland families migrated from Scotland to Ireland during the 17th and 18th centuries. They were granted the lands of the native Catholic Irish. Some 16 families settled in Derry in Ulster, in the north of Ireland.

However, to many, life in Ireland became a disillusionment. Conditions were little better than in their Scots homeland. Poverty prevailed, and the religious conflicts remained, except that now they were in another colonial land and without the same support and kinship of the clan. The New World North American colonies beckoned to the adventurous.

Clansmen sailed aboard the small sailing ships known as the "White Sails" which plied the stormy Atlantic, ships such as the Hector, the Rambler and the Dove, indenturing themselves for as long as ten years to pay their passage. These ships were originally designed for 100 passengers, but frequently sailed with 400 to 500 people on board. Many ships arrived with only 60 to 70% of their overcrowded passenger list alive, the rest dying at sea.

In North America, the Highlanders settled Virginia, the Carolinas, Pictou, Nova Scotia and the Ottawa Valley. Some of the first migrants which could be considered a kinsman of the name MacGregor, or of that same Clan or family, were Duncan McGregor settled in South Carolina in 1716, along with Mall; Gregor McGregor settled in Virginia along with John in 1716; John McGregor settled in Boston in 1766; Duncan, John, Joseph, Peter, Robert and William McGregor all arrived in Philadelphia between 1840 and 1860; Greggie and Jane Macgregor settled in Georgia in 1737.

The American War of Independence found many who were loyal to their new cause, while others remaining loyal to the Crown trekked north to Canada and became known as the United Empire Loyalists.

Many prominent people enjoy the distinction of this name and they include: Kelvin McGregor, American Lawyer; Sir George McGregor, New Zealand Judge; Malcolm McGregor, Canadian Professor of the Classics; Air Marshall Andrew McGregor; Sir Colin MacGregor, Chief Justice in Jamaica; Duncan MacGregor, Dentist; Edward MacGregor, British Diplomat; Hon. Sir George MacGregor, Judge.

The most ancient grant of a Coat of Arms found was: Silver with an oak tree surmounted by a sword on its tip a red crown.

The Crest was: A black lion's head with an antique crown.

The ancient family Motto for this name was: "S rioghal Mo Dhream" (Royal is my race).

My patrilineal line apparently descends from an Ulster Irish sept of this Scots name banned by the English for some while and / or perhaps from the meaning 'Watcher'.

Tartan Day, a day set aside for the celebration of the Scottish influence on North America, Australia and New Zealand, but not celebrated in Scotland itself. It is the anniversary of the Declaration of Arbroath, 6th April [ in 1320 ] : One passage in particular is often quoted from the Fergusson translation:

...for, as long as but a hundred of us remain alive, never will we on any conditions be brought under English rule. It is in truth not for glory, nor riches, nor honours that we are fighting, but for freedom – for that alone, which no honest man gives up but with life itself.]

Tartan is a pattern consisting of criss-crossed horizontal and vertical bands in multiple colours. Tartans originated in woven cloth, but are now used in many other materials. Tartan is particularly associated with Scotland. Scottish kilts almost always have tartan patterns. (Tartan is also known as 'plaid' in North America, but this word means a tartan cloth slung over the shoulder or a blanket.)

A Tartan is made with alternating bands of coloured (pre-dyed) threads woven as both warp and weft at right angles to each other. The weft is woven in a simple twill, two over - two under the warp, advancing one thread each pass. This forms visible diagonal lines where different colours cross, which give the appearance of new colours blended from the original ones. The resulting blocks of colour repeat vertically and horizontally in a distinctive pattern of squares and lines known as a sett.

www.viddler.com/explore/scotiana/videos/4/

Until the middle of the nineteenth century, tartans were simply different cloth patterns, whereof one chose the tartans most to one's liking - in the same way as people nowadays choose what colours and patterns they prefer in their clothing. Thus, it was not until the mid 1800s that specific tartans became associated with Scottish clans or Scottish families, or simply institutions who are (or wish to be seen as) associated in some way with a Scottish heritage.

Origins

The world's first colour photograph, made by the Scottish scientist James Clerk Maxwell in 1861, was of a tartan ribbon. Textile analysis of fabric from Indo-European Tocharian graves in Western China has shown similarities to the Iron Age civilizations of Europe dating from 800 BC, including woven twill and tartan patterns strikingly similar to Celtic tartans from Northwest Europe. The Celts wore coats set with a pattern of checks close together and of varied colours, similar in fashion to the Scottish, Irish, and Welsh tartans. Tartan patterns have been used in British and Irish weaving for centuries. Northumbrian tartan is held by some to be the earliest British tartan . A possible predecessor of Northumbrian Tartan dating from the 3rd century, found near the Antonine Wall and known as the "Falkirk sett", has a checked pattern in two colours identified as the undyed brown and white of the native Soay sheep. The fabric had been used as a stopper in an earthenware pot containing a hoard of silver coins.

Parti-coloured cloth was used by the Celts from the earliest time, but the variety of colours in the clothing was greater or less, according to the rank of the wearer. That of the ancient kings had seven colours, that of the druids six, and that of the nobles four . In the days of Martin Martin (circa 1700), the tartans seemed to be used to distinguish the inhabitants of different districts and not the inhabitants of different families as at present. He expressly says that the inhabitants of various islands were not all dressed alike, but that the setts and colours of the various tartans varied from isle to isle. As he does not mention the use of a special pattern by each family, it would appear that such a distinction is a modern one, and taken from the ancient custom of a tartan for each district, the family or clan in each district originally the most numerous in each part, eventually adopting as their distinctive clan tartan, the tartan of such district. Martin's information was not obtained on hearsay: he was born in Skye, and reared in the midst of Highland customs.

John Campbell of the Bank, 1749. The present official Clan Campbell tartans are green. For many centuries, the patterns were loosely associated with the weavers of a particular area, though it was common for highlanders to wear a number of different tartans at the same time. A 1587 charter granted to Hector Maclean of Duart requires feu duty on land paid as 60 ells of cloth of white, black and green colours. A witness of the 1689 Battle of Killiecrankie describes "McDonnell's men in their triple stripes". From 1725 the government force of the Highland Independent Companies introduced a standardised tartan chosen to avoid association with any particular clan, and this was formalised when they became the Black Watch regiment in 1739.

The most effective fighters for Jacobitism were the supporting Scottish clans, leading to an association of tartans with the Jacobite cause. Efforts to pacify the Highlands led to the 1746 Dress Act banning tartans with exemptions for the military and the gentry. Soon after the Act was repealed in 1782 Highland Societies of landowners were promoting "the general use of the ancient Highland dress". William Wilson & Sons of Bannockburn became the foremost weaving manufacturer around 1770 as suppliers of tartan to the military. Wilson corresponded with his agents in the highlands to get information and samples of cloth from the clan districts to enable him to reproduce "perfectly genuine patterns" and recorded over 200 setts by 1822, many of which were tentatively named. The Cockburn Collection of named samples made by Wilsons was put together between 1810 and 1820 and is now in the Mitchell Library in Glasgow. At this time many setts were simply numbered, or given fanciful names such as the "Robin Hood" tartan.

By the 19th century the Highland romantic revival inspired by James Macpherson's Ossian poems and the writings of Walter Scott led to wider interest, with clubs like the Celtic Society of Edinborough welcoming Lowlanders. The pageantry invented for the 1822 visit of King George IV to Scotland brought a sudden demand for tartan cloth and made it the national dress of the whole of Scotland, with the invention of many new clan tartans to suit.

Clan tartans

"Ye principal clovris of ye clanne Stewart tartan," which appeared in the Vestiarium Scoticum of 1842. The Vestiarium is the source of many of today's clan tartans. The naming and registration of official clan tartans began on April 8, 1815 when the Highland Society of London (founded 1778) resolved that all the clan chiefs each "be respectfully solicited to furnish the Society with as Much of the Tartan of his Lordship's Clan as will serve to Show the Pattern and to Authenticate the Same by Attaching Thereunto a Card bearing the Impression of his Lordship's Arms." Many had no idea of what their tartan might be, but were keen to comply and to provide authentic signed and sealed samples. Alexander Macdonald, 2nd Baron Macdonald of Slate was so far removed from his Highland heritage that he wrote to the Society: "Being really ignorant of what is exactly The Macdonald Tartan, I request you will have the goodness to exert every Means in your power to Obtain a perfectly genuine Pattern, Such as Will Warrant me in Authenticating it with my Arms."

The tartan of a Scottish clan is a sequence of colours and shades unique to the material, authorised by the clan society for use by members of that clan for kilts, ties, and other garments and decorations. Every clan with a society has at least one distinct tartan. While "heraldic" in the sense of being visual representation of blood relation, they are not "Scottish heraldry", strictly speaking. In Scotland, heraldry is protected under the law by the court of the Lord Lyon, King of Arms, and there are penalties for bearing an unauthorised Coat of arms. Any tartan specified in a Grant of Arms by the Lord Lyon is registered by him, but there is no legal prohibition against wearing the "wrong" tartan. It is considered proper to wear a clan tartan if the wearer is associated with the clan by name, by blood or by legal adoption. In this connection, one ought to be mindful of the fact that by tradition, Scottish bloodlines run on the mother's side as well as the father's (As the saying goes: "Scots blood cannot be diluted by anything save by Scots whisky!" or whiskey, the Irish spelling) - just as clan chiefs are by no means necessarily male; therefore, wearing the tartan of one's grandmother's clan is held to be perfectly appropriate, and, indeed, a most laudable manifestation of proper veneration. It is also proper to wear a tartan ascribed to the district, county, or shire.

Interestingly, a few tartans are now described as "general", i.e. acceptable for all to wear. The Black Watch tartan is the most well-known of these. Furthermore, the "Stewart Hunting Tartan" is also considered a general tartan by many; originally, as the name implies, a Stewart tartan, its use in several Highland regiments led to this broadening of its application. It remains, however, the most popular tartan in use by Stewart clan members. Finally, a few words should be said about the best known tartan of all: the famous Royal Stewart. Originally a variation on the Stewart of Galloway clan tartan, and as such a bona fide Stewart tartan, it was favoured by the Royal Family, wherefore many people consider it a Royal tartan. For this reason, it became a much sought-after tartan with the Highland regiments; and this, again, led to its present-day popularity, where it functions, for all practical purposes, as THE Scottish Tartan, being used with everything for shortbread boxes to mugs and miniskirts. Queen Anne, foreseeing this development, remedied it once and for all by affirming that the British sovereign was to be considered clan chief of all Britons - English, Scots, Welsh and Irish - and that every (loyal) British subject therefore had the right to display her/his allegiance to the clan chief by wearing the clan tartan of the United Kingdom: The Royal Stewart.

In the borderlands area of England abutting Scotland, tartans are called 'checks'.

Other tartans

The Black Watch tartan, also known as the "Government sett", or the Campbell tartan. The tartan was used, and is in current use, by several military units throughout the Commonwealth.

An example of a modern Hunting tartan, the MacAulay Hunting tartan. Hunting tartans are generally darker and less distinct tartans, and meant to resemble camouflage. In addition to the clan tartans, there are many tartans registered for families, districts, institutions and even specific commemorative "memorials" for events or persons. Further, tradition reserves some patterns for use by Scottish Highland military units of the United Kingdom and Commonwealth countries.

Those units associated with the British Royal Family use the Royal Stewart Tartan regardless of whether they are affiliated by blood to the Stewart clan. This is because of the Royal Family's Stewart ancestry through James VI of Scotland. The Royal family themselves use the Balmoral tartan. However tartan is pretty inclusive. There are tartans for military forces like the Royal Air Force & Royal Canadian Air Force, commercial companies, special interest groups like Amnesty International, religious movements (including Hare Krishna), cities, football clubs, dancing and whisky-drinking societies, non-British Celtic groups such as French Bretons and Spanish Galicians, commemorations and regions of the world where people of the Scottish Diaspora live. As a result most people, whether of Scottish ancestry or not, can find some tartan which is significant for them. There are also general fashion tartans, not officially registered in Scotland, for those who do not care about the significance.

In Canada all provinces have an official tartan.

British Airways used a tartan design as part of its ethnic tailfin rebranding. This design, Benyhone or "Mountain of the birds," was one of the most widely used designs, being applied to 27 aircraft of the BA fleet.

The Clergy are the only profession represented by a separate tartan. The legend that goes along with this is that they needed a separate tartan to wear instead of their own family's so that they would not be attacked by members of their new congregations who were feuding with their clan.

In the Celtic regions of Cornwall and Wales tartans and kilts have been adopted as part of the 19th and 20th century Celtic revival.

The traditional Northumbrian tartan tartan, known in Scotland as the Shephard's Tartan, is perhaps the oldest tartan design in Britain. It is in common use, for instance being worn by Northumbrian Pipers.

The Beach The Pier

Goal 1: to start a Windowfarming craze in New York City and other dense urban areas, helping people grow some of their food year-round in their apartment windows.

Goal 2: give ordinary folks a means to collaborate on research and development at our.windowfarms.org

History

In February 2009, through a residency at Eyebeam, Britta Riley and Rebecca Bray began to build and test the first Window Farms prototype. Growing food inside NY apartments is a challenge, but within reach. The foundational knowledge base is emerging through working with agricultural, architectural and other specialists, collecting sensor data, and reinterpreting hydroponics research conducted by NASA scientists and marijuana farmers. We have been researching and developing hydroponic designs that are inexpensive and made from relatively inexpensive materials. The working prototype is a drip system made from recycled water bottles, holding 25 plants. Beans, tomatoes, cucumbers, arugula, basil, lettuce and kale are thriving.

While completing the first Prototype in mid-April, we invited a dozen "Pioneers" to join us in creating Window Farms. We asked them to approach the project like a night class, devoting one night a week for two months. We showed them our prototype and presented the DIY research and development we did so far and invited them to build on our research to create their own designs. Currently, the Pioneers are designing their systems. Their innovative ideas are adding to the knowledgebase about DIY hydroponics.

Note: this photo was published in a Sep 4, 2011 issue of Everyblock NYC for the "customized" region of Central Park. It was also published in an undated (early Dec 2012) blog titled "Deportes en Central Park."

*******************************************

You probably think that you already know everything that you need to know about the Central Park reservoir. After all, everyone has heard of New York City, and most people (except the residents of certain boroughs that we won't mention by name) assume that "New York City" means "Manhattan." And if you've heard of Manhattan, then you've heard of Central Park ... and if you know about Central Park, then you know about the reservoir in the middle of the park. What more is there to know?

Well, actually, there's a lot you should know, beginning with the fact that its official name is now "The Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis Reservoir," in honor of the late widow of President John Kennedy. But you can call it the Central Park Reservoir, because that was its original name, and that's what most of us here still do call it. (We also insist on calling the Robert F. Kennedy Bridge by its original moniker, "the Triboro Bridge," but who knows how long that will last.)

More importantly, it's not even a reservoir any more ... or, to be more precise, it became a "decommissioned" reservoir in 1993, when it was deemed obsolete because of a new water-main under 79th Street that connected to the Third Water Tunnel. (There was also some concern that the reservoir might eventually become contaminated because of the nasty habit of the rowdy bridge-and-tunnel crowd -- aka visitors from New Jersey, Long Island, and other 'burbs -- to pee in the reservoir after getting thoroughly sloshed on green beer and Ripple wine every St. Patrick's Day. But we don't really like to talk about that, because they eventually go home, and we make a lot of money from the event.)

So basically, the Central Park so-called reservoir is just a big pond with a billion gallons of water (give or take a gallon or two), with colorful Kanzan cherry trees along one section, a bunch of rhododendrons along another section, and lots of animals (mallards, Canadian geese, coots, loons, cormorants, wood ducks, raccoons, grebes, herons, and egrets) who hang out in the general area. It also has a 1.58-mile jogging path, which means that you can almost always find dozens of people jogging, walking, or racing around the park; and only the cynics would remind you that game show host Jack Barry died while jogging around the reservoir in 1984.

You might think that the reservoir was originally a pond or a small lake, or that it was fed and replenished by some kind of underground stream. But in fact, the reservoir was built during the period of 1858-1862 by Frederick Law Olmstead and Calvert Vaux, as part of the overall design of Central Park. It was never a source of water itself, nor was it a "collecting" reservoir; its purpose instead was to receive water from upstate New York, via the Croton Aqueduct, and distribute it to the thirsty residents of Manhattan. All of that predated the work of Olmstead and Vaux; the Croton aqueduct was begun in 1837, and began delivering water to New York City in 1842.

So much for the history of the place. Like I said, it's basically just a big pond in the middle of Manhattan; but it happens to be a very beautiful place, especially with the skyline of the Upper East Side, the Upper West Side, and central Manhattan so visible from different vantage points. During the brief week or two that the cherry trees are in blossom, it's almost as beautiful as the famous stretch of trees in Washington; and it's a peaceful place for a stroll throughout the spring, summer, and fall. It's even beautiful in the dead of winter, when much of the water has frozen over, and when the jogging path is basically empty...

On three consecutive days in mid-to-late August, I walked around the reservoir with my camera, doing my best to capture some of the peaceful beauty, as well as the activity of the joggers and walkers and tourists. On the first day, I walked clockwise around the reservoir -- because everyone else was following the posted rules, and was running/walking counter-clockwise, which made it easier for me to photograph them. Then I came back the next day and walked the circumference again, but this time in the officially-sanctioned counter-clockwise direction. And then I decided that all of the still photos had failed to capture the beauty of the fountain that sprays a plume of water high into the air, as well as the constant motion of all those joggers and walkers ... so I came back for a third lap around the park, but this time with my camera set to "video" instead of "still." I've done my best to winnow all of the photos and videos down to a representative set; but to truly appreciate the beauty of the place, you'll have to come back and see it for yourself.

By the way, don't ask me what a grebe is. I have no idea, and I can only hope that I haven't stepped on one by mistake as I've walked around the reservoir from time to time...

As promised the summary of the discussion about the color cast if you use LEE and B & W filters. The English translation you will find below the Dutch summary.

Een fotovriend van me mailde me dit linkje: landscapephotographymagazine.com/2011/lee-big-stopper-and...

-------------------------------------------------------

A few weeks ago I posted a question on Flickr about the blue cast when using the LEE big stopper and ND6. Before using the LEE-filters I used a B & W ND110 and ND106 filter to get the LE-effect of the clouds as optimally as possible.

In the B & W filters there is always a magenta cast that is easy to remove by loading the RAW file, images taken by using LEE was very blue. I was disappointed. If you read the reviews, LEE is the best filter you can use. Well .... at first sight I did agree. What a mess, these LE’s, so blue you've never seen at least I didn’t.

I thought to myself this is all about the white balance. So I searched on google and yes, I found out some topics about the blue cast, see the links:

leefilters.uservoice.com/knowledgebase/articles/40152-big...

landscapephotographyblog.com/camera-craft/the-battle-of-t...

mattharrisphotography.co.uk/articles/reviews/lee-big-stop...

A photo friend of mine emailed me this link: landscapephotographymagazine.com/2011/lee-big-stopper-and...

There was a very nice discussion and many tips / tricks on Flickr. So much fun to read and follow, I think this should happen more often on Flickr.

Below is a summary of this discussion and the tips / tricks.

Both B & W filters as LEE filters provide color cast, there is a fact. You have to post process your RAW file in Lightroom or Photoshop (playing with the white balance color tone until you are satisfied).

Stacking filters (2 or more filters) gives an extra color cast.

The question whether you already must adapt the white balance when recording, different answers were given. Opted for automatic white balance (I myself always) or daylight. In both cases you have to adjust the white balance in Lightroom or Photoshop. I did some test shots taken with the white balance at 10,000 Kelvin, as recommended by LEE. I think the difference between automatic and 10000 Kelvin is negligible.

What could help you when editing to natural colours is making a picture without the filter, such as the "reality" is.

A very interesting page to read also: www.cambridgeincolour.com/tutorials/camera-lens-filters.htm

Many photographers who shoot extremely LE’s (3 minutes or more), put their image in black and white, you do not suffer from the color cast then. They also fit the white balance first in Lightroom or Photoshop before processing their image to black and white.

There are a number of tutorials processing to black and white, which I really recommend.

Microsoft Visio Stencil Links Collection

Over the years as I have used Microsoft Visio, I found the need for stencils from various vendors during this time. Visio 2013 only comes with a certain amount therefore there’s a need for a handy Microsoft Visio Stencil Links...

mikereams.com/2016/01/collection-of-visio-stencils/

Over the past few years, we've been using the What To Withdraw Tool from ITHAKA to weed our print serials that are in the JSTOR archive. Not all of the volumes are already in the archive, and some titles we continue to receive in print for one reason or another (although we moved as many as we could to online-only). I maintain a spreadsheet that I use to track which volumes need to be withdrawn every year, and where we are in the process of having the whole run fall into the JSTOR archive coverage. I've spent most of today gathering data, adding 51 new titles to the list, creating reports for Stacks Maintenance and Serials staff, and updating holdings data in our OpenURL knowledgebase.

Feral Swine, more often referred to as wild boar, were first introduced in North America by European and Spanish explorers some 400 to 500 years ago. The wild hog remained confined to the forests

and swamps of the South Eastern US, from Florida to Texas, where they survived and flourished but remained in check. In a time frame beginning around 1990 to the year 2009, the wild boar broke out and made a dramatic spread from their isolated boundaries of East Texas and the South Eastern United States. They had existed in these areas for hundreds of years, as mentioned in the journals

of Daniel Boone, Davy Crockett, and other legends. In Texas Wild hogs spread northward through the Panhandle and westward, all the way through Texas into New Mexico. I am now receiving first hand reports that their northward expansion has now established itself in irreversible numbers in parts of southern COLORADO. The mountains will offer no resistance to wild boars ability to survive and spread. Their ancestors Eurasian Boar were mountain animals. Wild Boar really do have a shield.

This shield is considered scar tissue or a callus which becomes harder and thicker with age. The shield covers the hog, beginning from the neck to the last rib. This shield is generally about 1 inch

thick, but can be more than 3 inches thick and is found mainly on the boar. It's purpose is to

protect the boar during battles with each other.

SOME FAST FACTS AS OF 2006:

STATES WITH FERAL HOGS: 39, plus 4 Canadian provinces.

TEXAS COUNTIES with Feral Hogs, 225 out of 254 counties.

HOG POULATION IN TEXAS; 2,000,000 (MILLION)+!

NATIONAL POPULATION is estimated at around 4,000,000.

ESTIMATED ANNUAL AG DAMAGE from feral swine $52 MILLION!

LANDOWNER ANNUAL EXPENSE to control feral swine $7 MILLION

NATURAL LIFE EXPECTANCY OF A FERAL SWINE IS 6 to 8 years.

AVERAGE SIZE of feral swine is 100 to 150 pounds, but depending

on the region can obtain sizes in excess of 600 lbs.

REPRODUCTION OF FERAL SWINE: Once a sow reaches breeding age at 7 or 8

months of age they can be responsible for 1,000 plus feral swine in a 5 year period.

The State of Texas had an estimated population of around 2 MILLION at last check.

( If 1/4 are breeding sows!? )

Webster's dictionary defines feral as: having escaped from domestication and become

wild. Hence, all feral hogs in the U.S. up until the 1930's were from domestic stock.

Wild boar look very different from domestic pigs. They have smaller ears and much

longer snouts; their tails are straight and tufted at the tip. Hair coloring is brown to black.

Long bristles run from the head along the centre line of the back, and can be raised two

to three inches from the body when wild boar are excited or agitated. With their hind

legs shorter than front legs, wild boar have an "uphill" appearance. Mature wild boar

measure up to 40 inches at the shoulder. Males can weigh up to 450 pounds and

females up to 370 pounds.

The weight of fully matured feral hogs will vary from 200 pounds to over 700 pounds.

True Wild Boar or Russian Boar will weigh around 400 pounds when fully grown

(4 - 5 years of age). The weight of the feral hog is determined by the domestic breed

line of the animal. Wild Boar are both good and safe to eat when prepared properly.

Texas and New Hampshire are the only 2 states where true Russian Boar may still

exist on a rare basis. BUT, with hunters buying and releasing TRUE RUSSIAN BOARS

into the wild this is ever changing. See: knowledgebase.texasboars.com/

A hog-like animal, the javelina or collared peccary (Tayassu tajacu), is native to the

southwest U.S. However, the feral hog is a different species, genus and family from the

javelina which belongs to the family Tayassuidae. The javelina is often confused with

the feral hog. Javelinas are hog-like in appearance, however, they are not closely related.

In Texas, the javelina is found in the more arid or semi-arid parts of the state, with most occurring in the South Texas brush country, the Trans-Pecos' desert grasslands, and the Edwards Plateau's oak-juniper woodlands. See: www.tpwd.state.tx.us/landwater/land/habitats/trans_pecos/...

Window Farms (Flickr) are vertical, hydroponic, modular, low-energy, high-yield edible window gardens built using low-impact or recycled local materials.

Eyebeam Open Studios: Fall 2009

eyebeam.org/events/open-studios-fall-2009

Eyebeam is pleased to host Open Studios for its 2009 Senior Fellows, Resident Artists, and Student Residents at Eyebeam’s state-of-the-art design, research, and fabrication studio; showcasing video performance, wearable technologies, code and humor, party technology, and sustainablity design.

///////////////

Eyebeam is the leading not-for-profit art and technology center in the United States.

Founded in 1996 and incorporated in 1997, Eyebeam was conceived as a non-profit art and technology center dedicated to exposing broad and diverse audiences to new technologies and media arts, while simultaneously establishing and demonstrating new media as a significant genre of cultural production.

Since then, Eyebeam has supported more than 130 fellowships and residencies for artists and creative technologists; we've run an active education program for youth, artists' professional development and community outreach; and have mounted an extensive series of public programs, over recent years approximately 4 exhibitions and 40 workshops, performances and events annually.

Today, Eyebeam offers residencies and fellowships for artists and technologists working in a wide range of media. At any given time, there are up to 20 resident artists and fellows onsite at Eyebeam's 15,000-square foot Chelsea offices and Labs, developing new projects and creating work for open dissemination through online, primarily open-source, publication as well as a robust calendar of public programming that includes free exhibitions, lectures and panels, participatory workshops, live performances and educational series.
