The Smithsonian’s National Museum of the American Indian (NMAI) and D.C. Area Educators for Social Justice (a project of Teaching for Change) hosted the Indigenous Peoples' Day Curriculum Teach-In 2019 on Saturday, September 7 at NMAI in Washington, D.C.

The speakers and workshops featured classroom resources for K-12 from Native Knowledge 360°, NMAI’s initiative to transform teaching and learning about American Indians, as well as resources from the Zinn Education Project, including the campaign to abolish Columbus Day.

The keynote speaker was Dr. Debbie Reese, an educator and founder of American Indians in Children’s Literature (AICL). She is tribally enrolled at Nambe Owingeh, a federally recognized tribe, and grew up on Nambe’s reservation. Reese is co-author of "An Indigenous Peoples' History of the United States for Young People."

As you can see it is a very short journey across the River Blyth to the Southwold side of the river. It takes anything between 1-5 minutes to get across depending on the tide and wind direction.

This service has been going for many many years and saves a walk of around a mile or two by foot across an old Bailey Bridge or a car journey of around 8 miles.

While I watched the oarsman was never short of customers many with bikes.. He made it look simple when he was controlling the boat and I suppose it was when you have all that knowledge and experience of the boat and the river tides.
