Not knowing anything of the flora of New Caledonia I tried to identify some of the astounding species growing on former Nickel mined sites during a very brief tour in Novemeber 2017. From photos I thought this plant may be Guettarda glabrescens but thankfully "Ben Caledonia" identified it as a member of the Genus Argophyllum - seven species of which are found in New Caledonia. Argophyllum is a genus in the Argophyllaceae family comprising around eleven species of shrubs and small trees. They feature alternate, simple leaves, often silvery white underneath. They occur in Australia and New Caledonia, where some species are nickel hyperaccumulators.
The soils of the the southern part of the main island (Grande Terre Sud) are characterized by high levels of iron (Fe), low pH (5-6), low fertility (low phosphorous, potassium and calcium), high exchangeable magnesium/calcium ratio and high concentration of the trace elements nickel (Ni), cobalt (Co), chromium (Cr) and manganese (Mn). Leaching concentrates iron and chromium oxides in the lateritic surface soil. The subsoil is rich in Nickel, Chromium, Manganese and other heavy metals are abundant in the volcanic rocks that form the south the main island of New Caledonia - known as Grande Terre Sud.
The incredible diversity of flora on the Grande Terre is both a function of isolation and soil type. The mega-continent of Gondwana started breaking up around 120 million years ago with Africa and South America separating off. Around 80 million years ago New Zealand and New Caledonia started to break away from Australia and finally, about 50 million years ago, Antarctica separated from Australia. New Caledonia experienced neither the aridity of northern Australia nor the glaciation of New Zealand. The vegetation that evolved to grow on the ultramafic rocks began around 30 million years ago.
These ultramafic rocks are heavily leached by annual rainfalls that exceed 200 mm/a in the south and 400 mm in the north. Leaching of the weathered rock leaves soils that are are low in pH and high in elements such as Nickel and Chromium that are generally lethal to plant growth. Mining exacerbates the situation as the topsoil is removed in mining baring the subsoil. The vegetation that has developed is known as marquis - botanically diverse comprising a huge diversity of plants, including many gymnosperms, that have adapted to this harsh environment.

Knowing his departure was closer AND finally knowing WHEN he'd be out, I started taking more pictures. As you can see, he decided to be super-cute this day (and I joke and say probably "knew" a week earlier, my camera with pictures of him had been stolen).

I used some of my rest time to celebrate a new piece of gear. Knowing I'd have to carry a lot of food and water to start the trip, I invested in this water sack at REI. I've used Platypus containers for a decade but was intrigued by the ability to clip this one to the outside of my pack, though I was skeptical that it could stand up to the wear and tear of a canyon trip. It did, and I'm sold on it. This one holds 3 liters, but REI carries models holding 2L and 4L as well.
Knowing nothing about Lancaster, I was surprised by how 'current' their marketing was. Not to mention prolific, I think mom ended up with about five free guides.
