Macro Mondays Redux 2021, Orange and EDC. I've carried this little knife every day for at least 35 years. Originally it was used to clean out my pipe. I haven't smoked a pipe for at least 25 years but I still carry the knife. Even use it once in a while. The orange, well it's just an orange and was delicious.
Once you scramble along the Blade, this is the view of Tasman Island that greets you. Tasman Island and nothing else until Antarcitca.
The Blade is a narrow ridge of Dolomite on Cape Pillar. Only a couple of meters wide it stands proud and is a distinctive feature of the surrounding landscape.
Striped Kukri Snake (Oligodon octolineatus) - Malua Forest Reserve, Malaysia
A beautiful snake which I had been hoping to see during my time in Borneo. I was somewhat heartbroken when I came across my first one freshly dead on a road in Danum Valley, a few days later in Malua, I came across another one which was alive! At first I thought it might be a coral snake (Calliophis sp.) but I quickly determined it was a kukri snake. Thinking I had nothing to fear I picked it up and quickly learned why this is called a kukri snake, a kukri is a type of Nepalese knife and apparently this snakes teeth are shaped like the knife. It immediately demonstrated the efficiency of its teeth and left its mark; several impressive slashes across my fingers and knuckles. My hand was bleeding quite profusely but I was unwilling to let this snake go as it was the first of its kind that I had seen alive, but I took care to not let it bite me anymore. Apparently I'm not the only one who has had a bite by an Oligodon bleed excessively, its thought that perhaps they have some anticoagulant in their saliva. Its amazing how effective its 'kukri' teeth were, I have been bitten by many snakes over the years and usually a nonvenomous colubrid of this size is of no concern and can barely break the skin, the Oligodon showed me it wasn't the average run of the mill colubrid. Despite being effective their teeth aren't designed to savage photographers, they're also useful when it comes to their prey which is mostly eggs but lizards are also taken. The teeth are used to slice the egg and allow for easier consumption.

The Knife Angel sculpture is doing a tour of the UK and is currently in situ outside Sage in Gateshead.
"The sculpture, made from over 100,000 seized blades, was specifically created to highlight the negative effects of violent behaviour whilst solidifying our critical need for social change. Not only does the Angel act as a catalyst for turning the tide on violent and aggressive behaviour, but it is also acts as a beautiful memorial designed to celebrate those lives who have been lost through these violent and thoughtless actions."

The sculpture Knife Angel was here for a month but it is travelling around some other cities including Coventry and Liverpool .
It's quite a beautiful piece to highlight the very dark area of knife crime.
The 27ft (8m) Knife Angel sculpture is made from 100,000 blades handed into police across the country. It was created in 2017 . Artist Alfie Bradley, who created the sculpture at the British Ironworks Centre, said it was a "monument against violence and aggression”.
In Britain we have a serious problem with knife crime that is resulting in deaths of mostly young people . Knife crime is difficult for any government to control. While a government that is interested in protecting its citizens from harm can easily ban guns from public ownership. Knives of course are used by all of us for all many of reasons, which makes a ban completely impossible .
I guess it is down to the criminal justice system to give out severe sentences for anyone carrying a knife in public without a reasonable cause . This will mean giving police greater stop and search powers . It will also involve education trying to get the message across that people do not have the right to carry any form of lethal weapon around . I would not want to minimise how difficult this will be . But the alternative is to do nothing, offer the victims thoughts and prayers and pretend there is not a problem.

This sculpture is currently touring Britain. Made from 100,000 knives, donated in knife amnesties or seized by the police, it is also called the "National Monument against violence and aggression".

I finally returned to my spiritual home for night photography, Joshua Tree National Park. I had not photographed nightscapes in the main part of the Park at night for at least two years. Instead, I had been focusing on photographing abandoned buildings and vehicles and more for my photography books. But not tonight. It was a beautiful March night lit with a half moon. I illuminated the scene with warm white light from a handheld ProtoMachines LED2 light painting device during the exposure. I've named this after one of the spiritual places in "Star Trek" lore due to its otherworldly nature as well as the significance of JTNP for me and my night photography explorations. Thanks!
