A close friend of mine who has kids' idea for decorating her kitchen cabinets. I should have gotten a wider shot to show the whole room. It was quite striking. The kitchen is a family room, after all.

...after grouting. I was shocked at how much the grouting changed the tile, brightening it up and making it POP. I'm in love with it.

In the kitchen of a North Carolina mountain house, walls and cabinetry are painted Hardwick White by Farrow & Ball. The cabinetry, dining table and bench were custom-made by Ruard Veltman, the architect. Stools from R & Y Augousti. The sink is Shaws Original Fireclay Apron by Rohl.

Making more kitchen cabinet doors. I think I have them about all done, now. I still need to build one small cabinet for above the refrigerator, though.
The saw horses were just brought inside. I sit them outside the shop when I'm working in there. This was shot standing in the doorway.

neal and i are constant travelers.we have visited so many exciting places.
we travel, at this point, in the summer, since that is when neal has his school holiday (he's an 8th grade geography teacher).
this summer we are planning another adventure (last year africa...this year destination can be anywhere world wide!)
we usually try to swap houses....a fun way to really live in a community and be part of where we are as opposed to "just tourists".
thought you might enjoy getting a peek at where i live and where i make my art.
Within steps of our front door you are minutes away by public transportation from the cultural, historical and intellectual excitement of Washington DC. Being off the Interstate Highway you are an hour away from many of the beautiful rural and historic towns of Virginia and Maryland, to include excellent hiking in the Appalachian Mountains and Shenandoah National Park.
Our home is a bright, comfortable, modern, small brick colonial style townhouse recently renovated in an open loft like style. It is set in a treed courtyard - in a long established community now designated a historic site. The type of place where the streets are full of people jogging and others walking their children and dogs - a safe place where people are friendly.
There is a living room dining room combination on the first floor together with a modern granite topped kitchen (glass top stove, microwave, dishwasher and garbage disposal, etc.) The kitchen door leads to a private, enclosed brick patio perfect for morning coffee or outdoors dining.
On the second floor there is a master bedroom with queen sized bed and a full bath with tub and shower. The small second room, which leads to an art studio, is used, as our grand-daughter’s play room.
The third floor is a full level art studio.
The lower floor - reached from the kitchen - leads to a large den with cable HDTV/DVD and includes an office area with computer. On this level is a second full bathroom with shower and toilet and washer and dryer. It also includes a folding tread mill.
The entire house has ac, with ceiling fans in the bedroom and studio. There are hardwood floor on four levels. The house has contemporary furniture and is excitingly decorated with modern art.
There is a full sized aero inflatable bed that can be set up in any of the rooms for children or other guests.
Time to relax - a large community swimming pool and two tennis courts are just behind the house. A five minute walk takes you to a large shopping center that can meet all your needs from two supermarkets, a coffee cafe, pharmacy, dry cleaners, beauty shop, bank and so forth. A twenty minute walk takes you to a local entertainment center with several movie theaters and a large variety of restaurants (including one of the best in the Washington area) and a wonderful bakery.

Every December 1st our regular mugs and coffee cups get swapped out with these Christmassy ones. There's even more than what is shown here, but here's a sampling of what we have to choose from.
I opened the cabinet door the other morning to reach for one, and it occurred to me to grab a shot of them before I put them up at the end of the week.

Cathy Koball has been so busy this past year that we were unable to just have her come to California and "paint our kitchen", but has been willing to assist us in accomplishing this daunting project by painting cabinet doors in her workshop and sending them to us. Pictured here is the prototype of the door motif.
Cathy..... you're brilliant and your work (done here in oil for durability) will last hundreds of years.

The kitchen at Zakopane in the Sierras is manufactured in 350 year old reclaimed teak from old farmhouses in Java. The counter tops are Brazilain granite, the backsplash is tumbled Italian travertine, the appliances are Thermador, and the cooking is as good as it gets..... Mulligan stew on Thursday nights, pot roast on Sundays in March.
