A beautiful night at Kirby Cove in the Marin Headlands. I should have brought a tripod! ISO 6400 hand held.

Kirby Hall is an Elizabethan country house, located near Gretton, Northamptonshire, England. (Nearest town being Corby). Kirby was owned by Sir Christopher Hatton, Lord Chancellor to Queen Elizabeth I. It is a leading and early example of the Elizabethan prodigy house. Construction on the building began in 1570 based on the designs in French architectural pattern books and expanded in the classical style over the course of the decades. The house is now in a semi-ruined state with many parts roof-less although the Great Hall and state rooms remain intact. The gardens with their elaborate ‘cutwork’ design complete with statues and urns have been recently restored.
The building and gardens are owned by The Earl of Winchilsea, and managed by English Heritage.

Although it was never finished, Kirby Muxloe is an outstanding example of late 15th century castle architecture and brickwork.
William, Lord Hastings, a trusted follower of Edward IV began to build the castle in 1480. He planned to create a splendid residence on a rectangular plan enclosed by walls, towers and a moat. A garden was also laid out beside the castle.
The new buildings however were never completed. Construction immediately ceased when Lord Hastings was executed in 1483 for his opposition to the seizure of the throne by Richard III.
Parts of the unfinished castle were subsequently occupied by the Hastings family but the buildings were probably abandoned and left to ruin during the 16th century. The site was eventually occupied by a farm. In 1911 the castle was taken over by the Ministry of Works, which renewed the moats and repaired the building.
The modern bridge to the gate takes the form of its medieval predecessor, timbers from which still survive in the moat.

Kirby Cove Beach is at the base of the Marin Headlands north of the entrance to San Francisco Bay. The view from the beach is stunning with the city of San Francisco framed under the wide span of the Golden Gate Bridge. The steep, mile-long trail to the cove begins at the parking area above Battery Spencer on Conzelman Road—eye-level with the bridge’s towers—and descends through a grove of cypress, eucalyptus, and pine.

I had hoped that the fog would clear as I drove northwards, but it got worse.
Nevertheless it was good to get the castle with snow. It was thawing rapidly and most was gone by early evening.
Not sure whether works best in colour or mono, so will also put up some mono shots later.
37510 'Orion' is seen just east of the village of Kirby Bellars on 17th September 2022 with the 5Q73 09:42 Derby Litchurch Lane - Wembley Intercity Depot, conveying C2C unit 720605. The train ran via Spondon, Loughborough and Syston East Junction before running-round in Melton Mowbray Up Loop and then retracing the MML from Syston towards Leicester, in order to turn the orientation of the unit.
The fantastic church in the background, of what was once the Kirby Bellars Priory, was built somewhere in the period between 1319 and 1359.

Evening shot of the jetty beside the Marine Lake, West Kirby, Wirral. Looking across the Dee estuary towards North Wales.
A classic viewpoint, the inner north wall of the central courtyard. We visited Kirby Hall in early October, and at the time of day when the sunlight lit up this section of the ruins with warm side lighting, which helped bring out all the detail in this richly carved stonework.
Construction of Kirby Hall began in 1570 - the second window from the right on the first floor clearly has the date "1640" carved on the stonework. Amazing that so much fine detail has survived after 350+ years.
I came across this while trawling across some old photoshoots. For some reason I didn't get the processing right the first time, but did a better job the second time around. Sometimes it's worth another look.
Plenty more info about Kirby Hall is available online, but on a fine day it's well worth seeing the real thing.
A view from the shore of sunrise over West Kirby on a cold December morning. Panorama of 4 shots stitched together.
