Illustration from "La Sainte Bible : Ancien Testament . . . / Compositions par J.-James Tissot"; with preface by Antonin Gilbert Sertillanges (1863-1948), introduction by Maurice de Brunoff (1861-1937) and the translation into French of Isaac-Louis Lemaistre de Saci (1613-1684). 2 volumes. Paris: M. de Brunoff & Cie, 1904. The illustrations were originated by James Tissot (1836-1902) who sketched as he read Scripture.
The edition, of which 561 copies were printed, contains 360 mounted colour, black-and-white and duo-tone illustrations in the text and 40 plates in three states: sepia-tone, partly hand-coloured, and finished coloured state. The plates are protected with captioned tissue-guards. The paper size is 15.75 x 13 ins; image size varies (circa 8.5 x 5.5 ins).
The paintings for all 400 Illustrations were based exclusively on the complete sketches (the inspiration being entirely Tissot's). The first 200 illustrations covering the Book of Genesis through to the story of Jephthah's daughter in the Book of Judges were painted by Tissot. The last remaining 200 illustrations were painted after Tissot's death in 1902 by Henri Bellery-Desfontaines, Auguste François Gorguet, Charles Hoffbauer, Louis van Parys, Michel Simonidy and Georges Bertin Scott.

The town of South Molton in Devon is an ancient settlement. It is listed in the Domesday Book as one of the places in Devon directly held by the king. There is also a reference to four priests holding a virgate, about thirty acres, of land from the king in alms. From this one may surmise that there was already a church here at this time.
The current church dedicated to St Mary Magdalene can be found in the middle of the town. At its core the church dates from the 14th and 15th centuries but has been restored at various occasions since then; particularly in the nineteenth century. Between 1825 and 1829 the church was enlarged and galleries were installed, which have since been removed. In 1864 the nave roof was raised and the clerestory inserted under the supervision of C.E. Giles.
There are nineteen windows in the church and all contain stained glass of various dates. Three of the windows cannot be photographed, one is in the tower and two are behind the organ.
This picture shows the South window of the South transept. The window dates from 1881 and was made by John Hardman and Co. of Birmingham. The main part of the window depicts the Presentation of Christ in the Temple; see Luke ii : 22 to 39. In the tracery are representations of Zachariah, father of John the Baptist, King David and Isaiah. The scrolls these are holding carry the text from Luke i : 69 which is part of the Benedictus.
Detail of late 19th century stained glass from St Elvan's parish church, Aberdare. This window depicts King David with his harp and St Cecelia with her organetto. The window is dedicated to a former parish organist
Israel's image may be tarnished with religious conflict. But while actually there, you'll see how harmonious the world can be with the world's major religions coexisting in one place. Jerusalem is living history. Tel Aviv - a modern metropolis resembling South Beach. You'll find signs in English, Hebrew and Arabic.

David and Bathsheba, c.1636-7
Artemisia Gentileschi
The Old Testament story of Bathsheba being spotted by King David while bathing was, like Susannah, often used as the vehicle for an erotic portrayal of a beautiful young woman. Underplaying the scene's sensuality by concealing Bathsheba's nudity, Artemisia instead emphasises her graceful interaction with her attendants. As was habitual in Naples, Artemisia made use of two specialist collaborators in this ambitious work: Viviano Codazzi (about 1604-16670) for the architecture and Domenico Gargiulo for the landscape.

From Artemisia
(October 2020 to January 2021)
"I will show Your Illustrious Lordship what a woman can do"
In 17th-century Europe, at a time when women artists were not easily accepted, Artemisia was exceptional. She challenged conventions and defied expectations to become a successful artist and one of the greatest storytellers of her time.
Artemisia painted subjects that were traditionally the preserve of male artists and for the male gaze; transforming meek maidservants into courageous conspirators and victims into survivors.
In this first major exhibition of Artemisia’s work in the UK, see her best-known paintings including two versions of her iconic and viscerally violent ‘Judith beheading Holofernes’; as well as her self portraits, heroines from history and the Bible, and recently discovered personal letters, seen in the UK for the first time.

The tomb of King David on Mount Zion in Jerusalem, Israel...
(section for women)
The massive, grandiose stone sarcophagus is draped in a cloth embroidered
with Hebrew text. It probably dates from the 16th century...
On the top is surmounted by twenty-two crowns of the Torah in solid silver,
they represent the sovereigns who, after David (pbuh), succeeded each other
on the throne of Israel..
