Kenny MacAskill, Scotland's Secretary for Justice, has just announced that the Lockerbie bomber is to be released on compassionate grounds, allowed to return to Libya to die.

I am shocked to find compassion and mercy alive in global politics, and applaud Kenny MacAskill's decision and the sentiments he expressed in his statement. Although I am a nationalist in the sense that I advocate political independence for Scotland, I am opposed to notions of patriotism and national pride. One can and should only be proud of one's own achievements, and where one happens to have been born is not a personal achievement.

However, I voted for a SNP government - a government which today has shown remarkable compassion in the face of international pressure and, I suspect, public opinion - and of that I am proud.

That politicians north of the border are exhibiting this kind of fair-mindedness and the moral fortitude to act on it is, it seems to me, reason enough for any person living in Scotland to wish to be separated from the rule of the self-serving, supine bunch in Westminster.

"The perpetration of an atrocity and outrage cannot and should not be a basis for losing sight of who we are, the values we seek to uphold, and the faith and beliefs by which we seek to live.

"Mr Al Megrahi did not show his victims any comfort or compassion. They were not allowed to return to the bosom of their families to see out their lives, let alone their dying days. No compassion was shown by him to them.

"But that alone is not a reason for us to deny compassion to him and his family in his final days.

"Our justice system demands that judgment be imposed but compassion be available.

"Our beliefs dictate that justice be served, but mercy be shown.

"Compassion and mercy are about upholding the beliefs that we seek to live by, remaining true to our values as a people. No matter the severity of the provocation or the atrocity perpetrated.

"For these reasons – and these reasons alone – it is my decision that Mr Abdelbaset Ali Mohmed Al Megrahi, convicted in 2001 for the Lockerbie bombing, now terminally ill with prostate cancer, be released on compassionate grounds and allowed to return to Libya to die."

A couple of days ago, I shot a candid photo of a guy standing out on a pier at a lake with his bicycle. I called it Moment of Zen. Earlier today he came biking towards me in Handen, so I waved to him, he stopped, took off his headphones and I then told him that I had a photo of him. He turned out to have an interesting story. This is Kenny Leckremo. A well-known musician. Used to be the singer in the band H.E.A.T. They toured around the world, including gigs in the USA and in Japan. Back in 2009 the band took part in the Eurovision Song Contest and became famous overnight. A few months before that when the band had just released their first album, Kenny had a scare during a gig and was rushed to hospital with an ambulance. Later he got some help from Hollywood star Peter Stormare and two days after that he had heart surgery in Stockholm. Kenny left H.E.A.T the following year. Today he is back in Sweden again after living in London for ten years. Kenny is working on a new musical project at the moment. He has written a lot of songs during the last seven years and a new band could be presented soon. I asked a few questions about it, but it is still a secret, but they will play melodic American classic rock. Oh, and a funny thing. When Kenny told me his full name I realized that I had taken a portrait of his brother, André a few years ago. I then told him that I was about to grab lunch at my favorite café together with local music legend Tompa Eken and Kenny told me that he had played maybe four gigs at Kafé 44 where Tompa runs much of the show so I said hello from Kenny when I sat down with Tompa at the cafe.

I recently attended a jazz concert by Mishran, a brand new quartet giving their very first public performance that was held at the Woodford Church in Portland, Maine. It was challenging for photo graphs as the light was quite poor and their faces were often hidden behind the music stands. I thought they were very good and they had an unusual but enjoyable sound. I was familiar with Correa's vocal style from a CD.

Christine Correa's Mishran Project

Christine Correa's Mishran Project is a collaboration of four New York City-based jazz and

Indian classical musicians coming together to explore the repertoire of singer Christine Correa's home country of India. Drawing from both Indian folk traditions and the modern popular Indian songbook, these four musicians explore the music through a jazz lens, using the songs as an vessel for their own improvisation and experimentation. This project is very personal for Christine, who grew up singing many of these songs at her school in Mumbai. Together with accordionist Ben Rosenblum, guitarist Kenny Wessel and tabla player Ethan Fox, Christine is able to reconnect with her musical and cultural roots, and combine this with her extensive knowledge and experience in straight-ahead and free jazz.

The resulting sound is a unique amalgamation of various musical influences, resulting in the name of the project, Mishran, which means mixture in Hindi. [Notes from a website]

She was a homeless kitty. I found her on the bridge. She was seriously injured... Now she's healthy active cat but with scars on hind legs. But despite the scars, we love her very much. Happy birthday, Kenny!

Everyone knows that you don't pay more than AUD4 for pizzas at Bimbo Deluxe.

Dine at the appropriate hour and you'll be rewarded with AUD4 pizzas. Even at double the price, the pizzas are deliciously good and value for money. And we haven't even moved onto the crazy flavoured vodkas, sunny upstairs patio, grungy lounge, and wackily themed music nights!

Drummer Kenny Wolleson performed on over 30 recordings during the 1990s and, as the decade progressed, gained increasing renown as a musician of astonishing versatility, skill, and ingenuity. He has recorded and toured with all kinds of musicians, from Tom Waits (Wolleson performs on Waits' 1993 collaboration with William S. Burroughs, Black Rider), to Sean Lennon, to Ron Sexsmith (Wolleson performs on his second album, Other Songs).

A founding member of the New Klezmer Trio, Wollesen is also all over N.Y.C.'s downtown jazz and avant-garde musicians' recordings, and has been so active as to tour with Bill Frisell and Myra Melford in the same month. — Joslyn Layne
