Information board next to the totem pole in Elliott Bay Park in Seattle.
Alaska Indian Arts, Inc. in Haines, Alaska, fashioned the 32 foot totem pole in 1975. The carvings are the authentic work of Tlingit Indians (Tlingit is pronounced Tuh-lin-git with a hard "g").
John Hagen, Ed Kasko and Cliff Thomas were the principal carvers of the works of art on red cedar, which are painted in traditional colors once produced with mineral paints. Originally situated at Pier 48, the totem pole was relocated here in June 2009.
About the carvings, the sign says:
- EAGLE represents a main clan of the Tlingit tribe.
- BROWN BEAR denotes the great size of Alaska, holding a TINNAH or money piece as a symbol of the great wealth of the great land.
- KILLER WHALE portrays tenacity and great strength.
- HAWK depicts sharp eyesight and perception of our future.
- GRIZZLY BEAR typifies bravery but holds a MOSQUITO to warn people all is not easy.
- STRONG BOY was ridiculed by all as being dolt and for being lazy. Strong Boy exercised in secret and when his uncle was swallowed by a SEA LION, all the other nephews ran. Strong Boy seized the Sea Lion by the tail and tore it in half letting his uncle out alive.

En 1920 (fecha de la foto) se llamaba plaza de Alfonso XIII, donde se aprecia el kiosko (derribado a finales de los 70) y la casa torre de Sestao (derribada en 1931).
I end up here, rarely through choice, when I go to Finland with my girlfriend to see her family. Their summer cottage is around the corner from here and there is literally nothing to do here.
Edward Michael Kasko (b. June 27, 1932, at Linden, New Jersey) is a former infielder, manager, scout and front office executive in MLB.
A standout defensive player as a shortstop and third baseman, Kasko played for ten MLB seasons (1957–1966) with the St. Louis Cardinals, Cincinnati Reds, Houston Astros and Boston Red Sox. He led National League third basemen in fielding percentage in 1960 and NL shortstops in that category four years later.

Finland hade under frihetskriget 1918 ingen annan fana än lejonfanan, eftersom den ryska vit-blå-röda inte mera fick användas. Man gjorde istället lejonfanor för att användas vid fosterländska och högtidliga tillfällen.
Denna fana, som tillhör Kaskö Hembygds- och Muséiförening r.f., (och deponerad i Österbottens Försvargillets muséum) syddes natten till den 16 april 1918 av fröknarna Edit Bengs och Ida Rosenberg i Kaskö, för att följande dag den 16 april användas vid hjältebegravningen av de två vid Tammerfors stupade Kasköpojkarna, sanitären Albert
Lindén (i kapten Gunnar Melins kompani) och grenadjären Gideon Sundell (16 år).
Fanan förvarades efter frihetskriget i en kamferkista av Kaskö Marinskyddskår och har därigenom behållit sir färg och skyddats från mal.

I hate day-tour trips. Ok, I must admit that usually they are well organized, you can count on a pick-up service directly to your hotel or guesthouse and you don't have to stress yourself figuring out how to reach the place with the highlight you want to visit. In oder words you can switch off your brain..and this is why I hate day-tour trips. You are forced to keep a certain schedule, usually one reaches the touristic attraction when the lighting conditions are too harsh for a good picture,e.g. at noon, and you are faced to hordes of tourists fighting to get a snapshot of the highlight of the day. This is not fun. Thus, I prefer to plan my holidays by myself, get information about what I am going to see with some weeks in advance. All what you need is a car and to know where you are heading to..and eventually some food supply, like the one shown in the picture above. While traveling through Iceland you can count on several supermarket chains like Bónus, Kaskó and Nettó. Toasts, salami, cheese slices and the Mjólkurkex biscuits were always in our shopping list!
