Karlsruhe is served by both local and long distance trams. This is one of a group of 36 dual voltage trams built by Düwag from 1991 to 1995 (numbered 801 to 836) which can operate in the streets at 750 volt plus the DB mainlines drawing 15,000 volt from the overhead. Classified as GT8-100C/2S these 8-axle trams are powered by motor bogies in the lead and trailing positions while the two centre bogies are unpowered. These cars seat 97 (units 809 & 810 with toilet) or 100 passengers and have a top speed of 90 km/h, 56 mph. There are rated at 560 kW, 750 hp.
Toilet equipped GT8-100C/2S number 809 in a siding at Karlsruhe Hauptbahnhof on Friday, April 23rd, 2004.

Today I met Muhammed and his younger Brother. Both are Somali and in Germany since a few days. Both looked very glad to be here and that joy translated without interruption - contrary to the hard exchange of words, if one doesn't understand each other.
We met before this big sign that says "Christmas Market Of Karlsruhe". As I took the photographs I found it somehow funny and a bit strange, but well, it kind of fits that we celebrate *love* these days, right?
I hope Muhammed and his brother will find a warm and safe place to stay and that they'll feel welcomed in this country.
