A kalesa (also known as calesa, carromata, or caritela in Philippine Spanish) is a two-wheeled horse-drawn carriage used in the Philippines. It is commonly vividly painted and decorated.

Kabayo (horse) and Kalesa (carriage) stroll down historic Calle Crisolog road in Vigan, Philippines looking for passengers. Vigan is the most intact example in Asia of a planned Spanish colonial town, established in the 16th century. Its architecture reflects the coming together of cultural elements from elsewhere in the Philippines and from China with those of Europe and Mexico to create a unique culture and townscape without parallels anywhere in East and South-East Asia.

Location: Heritage Village, Vigan City, Philippines

The City of Vigan is located in Ilocos Sur, at the northern part of the Philippines.

It is inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. A short describtion says: "Established in the 16th century, Vigan is the best-preserved example of a planned Spanish colonial town in Asia. Its architecture reflects the coming together of cultural elements from elsewhere in the Philippines, from China and from Europe, resulting in a culture and townscape that have no parallel anywhere in East and South-East Asia."

To walk the cobbled stone streets of Vigan can instantly transport a person back to the 16th century. Here, visitors can either explore by foot, or take the numerous 'calesa' for a guided tour by the 'kutsero'.

The village is just situated beside the city proper. Numerous clean tourists inns abound. Located also in the city are two plazas, Plaza Salcedo and Plaza Burgos. A prominent church, St. Paul Metropolitan Cathedral, as well as several museums.

The festival began in 1993 in an effort to nurture the pride of Bigueños by showcasing their identity and unique and antique appeal.

Among the significant highlights of this year’s Viva Vigan Binatbatan Festival of the Arts are as follows: the Zarzuela at Plaza Burgos titled “Walang Sugat.”slated Friday; Labor Day celebration at Don Isabelo delos Reyes Marker at Crisologo Street, opening of exhibits, Carabao Painting and Boklan Art’s Contests, and Free Dog anti- Rabies Vaccination and Heritage Singing Idol on May 1;

The Tarayem Fun Run, Beach Volleyball, Bankathon, Binatbatan Street Dancing Contest and Showdown on May 2; the Holy Mass of Apo Lakay; Kalesa Parade and Contest; Santacruzan and Disco sa Kalye on May 3;

The Traditional Games, Gay Parade and Cultural Show; May 5 – Abel – house décor contest, basketball exhibition of Gays and Abel Fashion Show on May 4.

The Challenge:

Your final challenge will be what this competition is all about...Avant Garde(AG) and who better to inspire you to the heights of Avant Garde, but the embodiment of AG herself...Lady Gaga. This superstar is Avant Garde to the max with a little splash of fantasy to keep everyone on their toes and speaking of toes don't forget those Gaga shoes. Wherever she goes Lady G goes there in Avant Garde style. Heck I'd like to bet that she wears AG to take out her garbage!!! With that in mind your final challenge is to design an outfit that would suit Lady G to a T.

Of all the challenges this was probably the hardest one to conceive since we are supposed to create a look for THE Lady Gaga. In the vastness of the possible looks, I remembered that The Lady herself will be coming to my country to have a big concert next month, so I imagined myself designing for her opening number here and what more could express my country's national identity than the Terno, a butterfly sleeved formal dress, and the Kalesa, a horse carriage that is decorated with colorful flaglettes and other blings. For this challenge I started out with a clean color palette, beige, cream and white to offset the otherwise flamboyant shape of the outfit. The sleeves are reminiscent of the Terno. The whole outfit is made of Jusi, an indigenous fabric and velvet panels. as for the embellishment, I opted for texture not shine so I used squared shells to use as breaker from the semi sheer fabric. Saran hair fringes finishes the look, I also made the Hoof shoes with tail, and the horse headpiece/wig to make the look more cohesive and utterly show stopping ready.

an insightful street capture hmmmm

GEN. LUNA STREET, WITH DOLE BUILDING, SILAHIS ANTIQUE SHOP, AND PLM

This is a particular street scene inside the Walled City of Old Manila, where tourists roam around and take pictures of the historical sites at Intramuros. I did a re-shoot of streets with the buildings such as Silahis Antique Shop (former site of Lourdes Church), Department of Labor and Employment, and Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Maynila. This time, the portion of the street is now pedestrianized, meaning, less cars for that area.

(I miss saying this: appreciate more in black. press L)

Old Old Old Spanish-era buildings and houses. This is what Vigan, Ilocos Sur is known for. At Crisologo Street, Vigan, you will see these houses and structures still pretty much intact and preserved, walking down this street would make you think you were thrown back in time, back to the Spanish era.

This street is closed to modern traffic. Only kalesas (horse-drawn carriages) are allowed to pass through this brick-paved thoroughfare thereby making the street ideal for both amateur and professional photographers who would like to take pictures of how it was hundreds of years ago.

Shot this during my visit @ Baywalk Roxas Boulevard.

A half hour kalesa (horse drawn carriage) ride around the walls is less than 20 USD. It's well worth it, especially if you don't know the history of the area and how to navigate around it. The drivers are polite and act as tourist guides at the same time.

About Casa Mision, the former Jesuit convent beside the reconstructed San Ignacio Church

Casa Mision (or the Religious House of the Society of Jesus/Jesuit Convent) is located beside the still-restoring San Ignacio Church in the Walled City of Manila, Intramuros. The building serves as the new ecclesiastical museum of Intramuros Administration where it features a period art collection of Intramuros Administration that includes ecclesiastical art, furniture, ceremonial robes and textiles, and other artifacts collected by Intramuros Administration.

Meanwhile, the new Church of San Ignacio continues to rise as the third church structure to be restored inside the Walled City, and this time as the tourism hub of the Walled City named as "Centro Turismo de Intramuros".

Intramuros last December 28, 2024. Now, some roads in the Walled City were paved specifically for pedestrians. This photo was taken right after the Rizal Day Commemoration Heritage Walk of Renacimiento Manila, and as you can see, the road was wet, because it was raining in the early morning.

Day 79 - March 20, 2010

One of the shots I took today during a stop over in Vigan, Ilocos Sur on the drive back to Manila.

Vigan is World Heritage Site famous for its cobblestone streets and well preserved Spanish-style architecture.

Kalesas (a Filipino version of the horse-drawn carriage) like this one, formerly a means of transportation back in the 18th century are used here as an attraction, giving tourists rides across the city.

Personally however, I would prefer that they "retire" this cultural icon for the sake of the horses. I'm sure they would be better off grazing somewhere then strapped to a harness and whipped around against their will.

The Horse detail is made out of cut organza, then textured by applying glue and saw dust to have that leather look.

A kalesa (sometimes called a karitela) is a horse-driven calash (carriage) used in the Philippines. The word, also spelled calesa, predates the Spanish conquest and descends ultimately from an Old Church Slavonic word meaning "wheels." This was one of the modes of transportation introduced in the Philippines in the 18th century by the Spaniards that only nobles and high ranked officials could afford. They are rarely used in the streets nowadays except in tourist spots and some rural areas.

A kalesa looks like an inclined cart. It has two round wheels on each side and two rows of seats that can accommodate four persons. The driver sits on a block of wood located at the front of the cart near the horse.

Although the kalesa has become a rarity, some century-old examples are still preserved in areas of the Philippines, such as the city of Vigan and Laoag. Kalesas can also be found in Intramuros and Binondo in the city of Manila and also in Iligan City, which has a street where decorated kalesas can be taken for a ride. In Cagayan, kalesas are common, especially in Tuao and many other municipalities. In Tuguegarao City, they are mixed in traffic with private cars, motorcycles, sidecar motorcycles, jeepneys, trucks, and bicycles. (wikipedia)

The horse is gone.

I’ll be the one to bear this.

This week will be really tough for me.

I know I can do this.

Have a great week ahead!

Calle Crisologo, Vigan | Ilocos Sur, Philippines

With old houses displaying colonial European design and Kalesas clip-clopping the quiet streets of Calle Crisologo, it’s as if time stood still in this part of Vigan.

Finally, I was able to revisit and capture an image of one of my favorite places in my home country.
