The City of Vigan is a Unesco World Heritage Site in that it is one of the few Hispanic towns left in the Philippines where its structures remained intact, and is well known for its cobblestone streets, and a unique architecture that fuses Philippine and Oriental building designs and construction, with colonial European architecture. Because of this, Vigan City was officially recognised as one of the New 7 Wonders Cities of The World.

Horse and carriage transportation is used mainly by tourists visiting the historical city of Vigan in Ilocos province, Philippines. In some rural provinces, kalesas are still used by locals alongside motorized transports. The horse and driver have to compete for road space with motorbikes, tricycles, automobiles, and trucks.

A small horse, used to pull a kalesa full of tourists around Vigan, Philippines, waits under shade trees for some customers. This horse and most horses in the Philippines are direct descendants of the horses the Spanish brought with them when colonizing the islands.

Kalesas or horse-drawn carriages at the cobblestone street of Calle Crisologo, Vigan, Ilocos Sur. Vigan is a UNESCO World Heritage site. UNESCO refers to it as the “the best-preserved example of a planned Spanish colonial town in Asia. Its architecture reflects the coming together of cultural elements from elsewhere in the Philippines, from China and from Europe, resulting in a culture and townscape that have no parallel anywhere in East and South-East Asia.”

A kalesa or calesa (sometimes called a karitela) is a horse drawn calash (carriage) used in the Philippines. The word, also spelled calesa, predates the Spanish conquest and descends ultimately from an Old Church Slavonic word meaning "wheels". This was one of the modes of transportation introduced in the Philippines in the 18th century by the Spaniards that only nobles and high ranked officials could afford. They are rarely used in the streets nowadays except in tourist spots and some rural areas. The Kalesa driver is commonly called as “Cochero” or “Kutsero”.

Kalesa'y may pang-akit na taglay

Maginhawa't di maalinsangan

Nakahahalina kung pagmasdan

Kalesa ay pambayang sasakyan

Kabayo ay di natin problema

Pulot at damo lang ay tama na

Matulin din sa kalsada

Tumatakbong maginhawa

Wala pang gasolina

It was one mode of transportation introduced to the islands in the 18th century by Spanish colonizers, and was initially reserved for only nobles and high-ranking civic officials. These are today rarely used in the streets except in the tourist areas of old cities and some rural areas.

When the kalesa was introduced in the 18th century, it grew into a significant mode of transportation in the islands. Rich, educated Filipinos known as the ilustrados used the kalesa for personal travel as well as for the transport of goods to nearby areas. During the American Occupation, the City of Manila was teeming with kalesas, but these declined in popularity after the devastation of the Second World War.

The kalesa driver is commonly called as kutsero (Tagalised from cochero, "car driver"). When a kutsero wants the horse to turn right, he says "mano” while he says "silla” to make the horse turn left.

I spotted my favorite bus driving northbound. I shot this with one hand while riding my mountain bike. I was curious how it'd look like. It seems quite sharp. I guess it's because I was moving at about the same speed as the bus and I used 1/250 shutter speed.

A kalesa looks like an inclined cart popularized during Spanish occupation as a method of transportation. It has two round wheels on each side and two rows of seats that can accommodate four persons. The driver sits in a block of wood hosted over the tip of the cart near the horse.

THE 18TH CENTURY "ROLLS ROYCE"

Kalesa is a horse-drawn carriage used during the 1800s as a mode of transportation in the Philippines at the time when Spanish occupied our country. At that time, only noble and rich people can ride on calesa. Today, calesa can be experienced by the ordinary Filipinos and foreign travelers by riding it to the places like Intramuros in Manila, and Vigan in Ilocos Sur where Spanish heritage is still rich. I took the photo of this kind of calesa outside San Agustin Church in Intramuros, Manila.

Intramuros offers many types of transportation, much of it geared to the tourist trade like this Calesa - horse pulled carriage.

The Spanish introduced the kalesa to the Philippines in the 18th century when they occupied the area.

It’s a horse (or donkey) drawn calash type of carriage. Basically, any carriage with a folding hood became known as a calash.

The calash was initially reserved for nobles and high-ranking civic officials. They are rarely used in the streets today, except in the tourist-frequented areas of old cities and some rural areas.

During the American Occupation, the City of Manila was teeming with kalesas, but they declined in popularity after the devastation of the Second World War.

ABOUT:

On June 24, 1571, the first Governor General of the Philippines Miguel Lopez de Legazpi reestablished the former Islamic Kingdom of Maynilad into Spanish City of Manila at the site of today's Fort Santiago at the bank of the Pasig River. Then over the years, the city (known as "Insigne y Ciempre Leal Ciudad/The Noble and Everlasting Loyal City") is surrounded by walls. That makes up the original Manila. Intramuros is one of the districts in Manila that the Spanish influence is still evident.
