At getting on for 8 x 8 meters, this Juniper (Juniperus communis subsp. communis) is probably ancient, and judging by it's surroundings unlikely to see another generation.
It was difficult to tell (due to the cliff on the right), but I think this is one individual. According the the NBN database this inividual hasn't been recorded, as it is in the wrong grid - whether that is down to a recording error or new individual remains to be investigated.
Junipers, once common, are now featured on the BSBI Rare database, and were last surveyed as part of the "Back from the Brink" programme in 2003.

This is the first i'm really getting to photograph Juniper, which is shameful as ive had her almost a year now!
but it was worth the wait to have her faceup completed by such an artist ^_^

One of the major themes of the Journey Moon is the balance between the security of a homebase and the renewal of new horizons. Annette Hinshaw says "we can die of having no roots as surely as we can of not moving." I feel like I've spent the last few years getting settled and growing roots. I don't think I'm ready to go adventuring again in a grand sense, but I was ready to get out of town earlier this month. Sometimes, going just makes you realize what you have left.
Over the last weekend my mom and I traveled to Central Oregon. It was fantastic to see the geology, the desert ecology, the stunning vistas and beautiful mountain lakes. This photo sums that up so much - the lava flow and stunted juniper in the foreground, the tall conifers and high peaks in the background.
In the end, though, my favorite part of the weekend was coming home. To the Wet Northwest :)

This dead bush caught my eye because at a glance it matched the color of the wall behind it, but had a surprising amount of other colors in it.
This is a Chinese Juniper I dug from a friends front yard in 1994. After an initial severe pruing/shaping, I planted it in the ground for a year, moved it to a large wood box for a couple years and then a plastic bonsai pot of another couple years. In 2005 I found this pot in a pottery store in Seattle and knew it was perfect.
