By way of a personal history project, a scan of the back pages of my adolescent diary, where I wrote down, how did I put it, "All the groups I've every seen." Apologies for my, um, iconoclastic spelling.
The first concert (or gig, as I might have said) was at the Rainbow in Finsbury Park, on Dec 17, 1977 (Yachts Blast Furnace and the Heatwaves The Boomtown Rats (I saw the Boomtown Rats the following year too. Too embarassed to write it down?). Lots of pogoing, not much gobbing, but the Boomtown Rats didn't really inspire that sort of thing. There were real punks in the audience, but the Boomtown Rats had appeared on Top of the Pops, and there were Rats' fans too - girls wearing school uniforms (after their hit "Mary of the Fourth Form") and boys wearing pajamas ('cause Johnny Fingers their keyboard player wore pajamas).

Sometime in 1980 or early 1981 I stopped writing down the bands I went to see. Probably because it started to seem a bit trainspotterish, or I'd started having beers at concerts and couldn't be bothered to write things up when I came home, or I misplaced this notebook. So there's no record of seeing U2 two or three times (serious chaps with mullets), or the Birthday Party (who out of all these bands, and the competition is fierce, probably were the most extraordinary act live). I saw most of these bands in London, a few in Boston.
Note on the links: I've linked to All Music a lot, hope that works. If not I'll go through at some point and find better links. Only Joy Division and Mission of Burma seem to have fans obsessive enough to list every performance of those bands. I'm not surprised, I've met some of those fans. There are a number of bands I saw which seem to have left no trace, (and I don't remember a thing about them). If any of these names are familiar to you (in the context of the late 70's), let me know.
A picture of me in 1980.
The posters wallpapering the stairwell of Afflecks Palace remain largely unchanged since the 80s. Like stepping back in time.
There was a portrait exhibition upstairs which was great but this iconic wall nailed it for me.
LWTUA, by Joy Division, what I was listening to while editing :-) - live version from the Still extended version.

Do you cry out in your sleep all my failings exposed?
And there's a taste in my mouth as desperation takes hold
Is it something so good just can't function no more?

In 1980 the Post-Punk-/Dark-Wave-Band Joy Division used this grieving angel for their cover of the vinyl 12" Maxi-Single called "Love will tear us apart".
Until today plenty of tourists visit the Staglieno cemetery to take a picture of that unusual angel themselves....
An employee of Staglieno told me, it`s the most asked sculpture on the cemetery...and for sure, it`s only one of plenty of wonderful sculptures on that place. It`s more an outdoor museum than a burial ground. It`s one of the most impressing cemeteries I`ve seen.
By the way, 4 years after release of "Love will tear us apart" by Joy Division the song became more famous, covered by
Paul Young ♫ ♪ ♫
I bet, you know that song :-D

Christian Boltanski tackles the problems of death, memory, and loss in his art that draws heavily from his own life. Boltanski’s art can be either dark and disturbing or playful, and sometimes both at once. This monograph examines every aspect of his art, from his unusual choice of materials - newspaper clippings, used clothes, photographs of photographs - to the spirits that haunt his work. One of his most successful exhibitions, 'Lessons Of Darkness' (1988), explored the personal pathos of the Holocaust.

Well, well, well. Would you look at that? My inner womble told me the big bits of cardboard would come in useful someday. It seems we've got a street drop on our hands. It is Friday after all so it'd be a shame not to really.
Whilst digging through the crates I came across 'Love will tear us apart' that never really got the attention I thought it deserves on initial release so thought we might redress that issue by remixing it a little and giving her a new lease of life and a chance to live free. Now we've just got to find somewhere suitable to place it...
Cheers

The late Ian Curtis of Joy Division, my modified version of this popular image. I wanted to instill a haunting look to match the late singer's expressive eyes.

Ian Curtis 'RIP'
A loaded gun won't set you free
So you say
We'll share a drink and step outside
An angry voice and one who cried
We'll give you everything and more
The strain's too much, can't take much more
Oh, I've walked on water, run through fire
