I've made a photo series inspired by Anton Corbijn's video for the Joy Division song «Atmosphere». It's gloomy stuff. You can see the ten pictures in Second Vision gallery from this Sunday on.

Nel Cimitero di Staglieno, a Genova, mi ha molto colpito la verosimiglianza e naturalezza di questo angelo disteso sull'arca della tomba della famiglia Ribaudo. Il monumento, di concezione simbolista, si trova nel porticato semicircolare del cimitero, e fu edificato nel 1910, su progetto di Onorato Toso, autore, tra l’altro, del pulpito del Santuario di Nostra Signora della Misericordia di Savona.
Ma questo angelo disteso sulla tomba Ribaudo mi ha ulteriormente impressionato per i fatti successi circa 70 anni dopo la sua realizzazione. Nel 1980 infatti questa immagine fu utilizzata per illustrare la copertina di un celebre disco, il singolo “Love Will Tear Us Apart” della band post-punk britannica Joy Division. Pochi mesi dopo la pubblicazione del disco il leader dei Joy Division, Ian Curtis, si suicidò.
Gli ultimi versi della canzone (il cui titolo è anche l’epitaffio inciso sulla tomba di Ian Curtis), sembrano recitati dall’ inconsolabile angelo: «Piangi nel sonno / tutti i miei fallimenti esibiti […] / mentre la disperazione mi consuma…».
Recently watched 24 Hour Party People which reminded me of some pictures I took of Joy Division in Mountford Hall....and here they are. They were supporting The Buzzcocks. As I recall, they played somewhat better than the headliners.

These rocks are pink granite apparently. I love exploring new places, (places that are new to me). There were several photographers plonked back behind this amazing spot, and I think most of them didn't move for all the time they were there. I'm glad I went exploring and I think I will definitely return :-). posted this while listening to The Chills 'Submarine Bells' a classic album from NZ.

i don't really know (remember) from which magazine or weekly that i cropped this from nor have any idea of who wrote it or when. I would imagine that it was either in the NME; Melody Maker; or maybe even Rolling Stone... It probably dates from around the early 80s -going by the other clippings that were filed alongside it. If anybody knows who wrote this; let me know.

Spent this evening reading a loaned copy of the Joy Division biography 'Touching from a distance' (thanks Timmy!), listening to Beat Happenings debut record, drinking coffee and talk on Gmail. Lovely.
