Memorial to John Walker, Stockton chemist who invented the friction match. They were first sold in 1827 at one shilling per box of 50 which I guess would be relatively expensive, but the convenience of being able to produce and sustain a flame with one item was a great step forward. I wonder how many matches have been struck since his first one!

We will not forget

his courage or sacrifice.

May God be with and bless him."

Fresno was 16-years-old when this photograph was taken in 1888, looking north from Ventura on J Street, now Fulton, which was on the edge of town. The grocery store of S. Obradovich is seen at right, with his delivery wagon in front, advertising his business as "Cash Grocers." Also seen in front of the store, is a man with perhaps a small child, in a horse-drawn "sulky" type cart. The store employed a common element in frontier towns, a "false front," a vertical extension of the front of the bulding beyond the roof crestline, giving the modest structures an air of dignity, appearing more immpresive, and creating a more urban atmoshere. Not to mention probably the most important feature, the large area for adverstising the business. In the background are small one-story homes and further back, the brick commercial buidlings along the central downtown corridor.

A tire shop stands at the corner today.

With patriotic bunting and flags, Fresnans gather for a Fourth of July celebration at the Club Saloon in 1902. On the southern edge of town, the sign above the porch sends a message to travelers, advertising that it is the "first and last chance," presumably for a cold drink. John Wieland's Extra Pale lager beer is promoted in metal sign on corner of the bar. The owner, Fred Ruge, with wife, are seen standing, jusr right of man holding guitar at center. Ruge sold advertising space on the side of his building to the local Rambler auto dealer. The location of the saloon was at the original southwest corner of Elm and California Avenues, no longer exists and is gone with changes in redevelopment and layout of the roads.

Called upon to come up with photos that reflect the weather- here a rainy day- I did that as I found it literally reflected in the windows of the Henry Madden Library, at Fresno State, as students make their way to classes.

MOD with the Red Team at Sarnic restaurant near the Hagia Sophia in a former Roman cistern that was an auto repair shop before it became a restaurant

The year was 1892, when Will C. Colson, left, and H.O. Buker, cigar in hand, posed in front of their drug store they opened in 1889, at 1908 Mariposa Street, along the bustling main corridor of the growing city. They spared no expense in advertising for the new business, especially for their "974" cough syrup. Of architectural interest, their drugstore utilized a popular feature of the era, a cast iron building front. Cast iron components such as columns, panels and decorative elements, manufactured in east coast foundries were pre-assembled for fit and detailing, disassembled and shipped to the building site for reassembly.

A four-story parking structure towers over the spot where the old drugstore stood.
