Georgia native Ervin Westbrook and his wife Rachel McCorra Walker left their Mississippi farm for Texas in 1858. They were joined by Rachel's brother, John H. Walker, and his family. The two families settled in this area in 1859. The cemetery began with the burial of Walker's wife, Mary Frances Wells, in 1864. It served as a graveyard for the Westbrook and Walker families and a number of their neighbors until the last burials here in the early 1920s. Among the 20 to 30 people buried here are Civil War veterans Ervin Westbrook, William P. Walker, and John Walker. (1994) (Marker No. 8008)

Memorial to John Walker, Stockton chemist who invented the friction match. They were first sold in 1827 at one shilling per box of 50 which I guess would be relatively expensive, but the convenience of being able to produce and sustain a flame with one item was a great step forward. I wonder how many matches have been struck since his first one!

Fresno was 16-years-old when this photograph was taken in 1888, looking north from Ventura on J Street, now Fulton, which was on the edge of town. The grocery store of S. Obradovich is seen at right, with his delivery wagon in front, advertising his business as "Cash Grocers." Also seen in front of the store, is a man with perhaps a small child, in a horse-drawn "sulky" type cart. The store employed a common element in frontier towns, a "false front," a vertical extension of the front of the bulding beyond the roof crestline, giving the modest structures an air of dignity, appearing more immpresive, and creating a more urban atmoshere. Not to mention probably the most important feature, the large area for adverstising the business. In the background are small one-story homes and further back, the brick commercial buidlings along the central downtown corridor.
A tire shop stands at the corner today.
