I spotted this oldtimer somewere in Central Java, although most cars are very old, cars like these are very very rare in that region.
The Java sparrow (Lonchura oryzivora), also known as Java finch, Java rice sparrow or Java rice bird, is a small passerine bird. This estrildid finch is a resident breeding bird in Java, Bali and Bawean Indonesia. This one was taken in Amazon World on the Isle of Wight. (UK).

I was extremely motivated to depart the airbnb at which I stayed the previous night.* Thankfully, the Java Joe's on 4th in downtown Des Moines provided a welcome refuge.
* The place smelled like dog and I found a flea on me. Needless to say, if all of the hotel rooms weren't booked, I would have skedaddled sooner.
Daybreak and the the veils of mist are still heavy over the jungle-filled plain on central Java. The sun has not yet reached the horizon but the sounds of the forest are increasing. The mist has started to take a little of the orange color forming in the sky before sunrise.

You should really watch this Large On Black since that brings out more details. My pictures aren't balanced for a white background and a lot of the finer details are lost in this small format. the large version is a sixth of the original - The medium size shown here even smaller...

The Cetho temple (candi) dates to the 15th century, and was one of the last major Hindu temples built in Java before Islamic rule took over the island. The style of temple is also quite distinct, since it diverges significantly from the older temples around Yogyakarta, which were more similar to the Indian style. Instead, here one can recognise a temple style similar to the typical Hindu temples of Bali, suggesting that the style was developed in Java first.
The temple is still used by a small Javanese Hindu community that lives on the slope of Lawu Mountain. These are one of the few Hindu communities which have preserved their Hindu religion in the face of Islamisation, thanks to their relative isolation.
I recently spent a week in Hawaii. Birding wasn't my focus, but I did see LOTS of birds as I toured parks and gardens near Honolulu.
This Java Sparrow was another species I saw most often foraging in the grass. And like the Chestnut Munias and Common Waxbills, I usually saw them in groups of a half-dozen or more.
NOTE: If you'd like to see more birds and flora from Hawaii, I've created a dedicated album that contains several photos not in my Photostream.
