To enable a Seeing Eye dog to guide safely, it mustn’t be fearful, afraid or startle easily. Their attention must remain on their work and the road ahead of them.

Seeing Eye puppies are kept in a safe environment, they are cuddled by humans, given time to play with other pups and toys. They have access to a playground and pool. They are exposed to a variety of different sounds, objects and floor textures. They are given the best of medical treatment. All to help get them become accustom to the world in which they will work.

When these pups, at 7 weeks old, are placed with raisers, they are very well rounded. Their recall is generally excellent and they know the word sit. Not always welling to doing it but know it. The raisers build and re-enforce on this foundation. These pups are strong and confident. Oneida (black Labrador) is among one of these lucky pups.

In contrast Jack (yellow Labrador), had been abandoned and was pulled from a high kill shelter in Georgia and adopted by my family and I. His history is unknown but the story he has told us; he was not treated with a kind or caring hand, he was infected with heartworm and had to endure the strong poisonous injections causing him to suffer through several seizures. He did not know how to play and toys were something he knew nothing about.

Oneida has sat by his side waiting for him to heal, for his health to improve and for him to have the will to want to play. She has slowly and persistently shaken fuzzy animals in his face, she has pushed nylabones over his direction, she has pounced at him all in the hopes of getting him to engage in play.

Slowly over the past weeks she has been successful. Today out in the snow, even with how distracted Jack was by this foreign ground, she wouldn’t take no for an answer. She pestered Jack til he gave chase.

British actor Jack Hulbert (1892-1978) was a popular comedian of the 1930’s with a trademark chiselled chin. In his musicals he often appeared with his wife Cicely Courtneidge.

John Norman ‘Jack’ Hulbert was born in Ely, Cambridgeshire, in 1892. He was the elder and more successful brother of Claude. He was educated at Cambridge and appeared in many shows and revues, mainly with the Cambridge Footlights. He was one of the earliest famous alumni of the comedy club. After Cambridge, he earned recognition and fame performing in musicals and light comedies. He made his film debut in Elstree Calling (1930, André Charlot, Jack Hulbert, Paul Murray, Alfred Hitchcock (some sketches)); appearing opposite his wife and frequent stage and screen co-star Cicely Courtneidge whom he had married in 1916. His career went through a successful period during the 1930s when he appeared in several films including The Ghost Train (1931, Walter Forde) with Cicely Courtneidge, Love on Wheels (1932, Victor Saville) with Edmund Gwenn, and Bulldog Jack (1935, Walter Forde), a tongue-in-cheek homage to the popular Bulldog Drummond films in which Jack was supported by his brother Claude and King Kong’s mate Fay Wray. He also wrote and directed some films such as Falling for You (1933, Jack Hulbert, Robert Stevenson) with Cicely and Tamara Desni (duaghter of silent star Xenia Desni).

Jack Hulbert's popularity waned as the 1930s came to an end. Some of his later films were Jack of All Trades (1936, Jack Hulbert, Robert Stevenson) and Paradise for Two (1938, Thornton Freeland) with Patricia Ellis and Googie Withers. During the 1940’s, he was a Commandant in the Metropolitan Special Constabulary, stationed at Vine Street police station in London's West End. After the war he and his wife continued to entertain chiefly on stage. Among his later films were Into the Blue (1950, Herbert Wilcox) starring Michael Wilding, and the crime film Miss Tulip Stays the Night (1955, Leslie Arliss) starring Diana Dors. On TV he was seen in episodes of Kraft Mystery Theater (1961), Compact (1964), Theatre 625 (1968), and Father Dear Father (1972). In 1962 he, along with his wife, Cicely Courtneidge, plus Vic Oliver, appeared in the BBC radio sitcom Discord in Three Flats. His final film was The Cherry Picker (1974, Peter Curran) starring Lulu. In 1975, Hulbert's autobiography, The Little Woman's Always Right, was published. His marriage to Cicely Courtneidge lasted for 62 years until his death. Their relationship is mentioned in the British television series Dad's Army in the episode Ring Dem Bells when Hulbert pulls out of shooting a Home Guard training film to spend time with his wife. Jack Hulbert died, aged 85, at his home in Westminster, London in 1978.
