It was interesting to learn that the black-backed jackal is one of the oldest canid species still in existence and that it has hardly evolved since the Pleistocene era, the time of the woolly mammoths. It is a relatively unspecialised carnivore that thrives in a wide variety of habitats, including deserts. This beautiful alert specimen was photograph on the African savanna in the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, Tanzania.

Coyote of the Canadian Rockies

The Coyote (Canis latrans) is a species of canine native to North America. It is smaller than its close relative, the Wolf, and slightly smaller than the closely related Eastern Wolf and Red Rolf. It fills much of the same ecological niche as the Golden Jackal does in Eurasia. The Coyote is larger and more predatory and was once referred to as the American Jackal by a behavioral ecologist. Other historical names for the species include the Prairie Wolf and the Brush Wolf.

This black-backed jackal was stalking a flock of sandgrouse drinking in a nearby pool.

All of these photos were taken just after dawn in January 2017 when we stayed in the Makuleke concession close to the border with Zim and Moz. I've shared some before but have reworked these through DxO Pureraw2 and whilst it improves them slightly they are still poor compared to results that can be obtained 6 years on with better equipment.

It's quite unusual to see 3 jackals together as adults but as Jackals are monogamous I suppose it's inevitable that one of their offspring may remain with them beyond weaning.

Decided I could still do more with this platform.

Now I think I might close the tab. Not because I don't have anymore ideas, just too tired to make 'em right now.

Three young jackals at different stages of running away. They'd paused to see what we were up to, wandering about before dawn.

Black-backed Jackal (Canis mesomelas) has a rather odd distribution in sub-Saharan Africa. There are two populations that are separated by a gap of nearly 1000km. The nominate subspecies mesomelas is found in southern Africa, with the northern population (schmidti) in East Africa including Ethiopia where I photographed this one. It is identified by its orangey body contrasting with its grizzled grey back and tail. They often have a black line between the orange and the grey, which gave rise to its scientific name mesomelas (middle black), though it's not obvious on this one. I have only seen a couple of Black-backed Jackals on my two visits to Ethiopia and they have always been wary, as apparently they are persecuted to protect livestock. This one paused at a distance to check us out, then promptly vanished. This was high in the Simien Mountains at about 4000m asl. They are territorial and monogamous, but unusually offspring from earlier litters help to raise their younger siblings.

An early morning encounter at the outskirt of my ancestral village in India.

As a child I used to hear them and fear them at night, they lived in our imagination and folklores. This one was seen by the side of a pond that was once heavily used by the people in the village. With availability of water from other sources, the villagers rarely visit this pond anymore; as a result, the sides of the pond are now overgrown with trees and bushes and created a perfect habitat for jackals and other wild animals. You can tell from this clip how young and clumsy the baby Jackals are. I feel very fortunate having the opportunity to spend some time with them. (Black-backed Jackal -Lupulella mesomelas)

Why not join us on the trip of a lifetime to the wonderful Zebra Plains Mara Camp in the Maasai Mara in Kenya. The camp is set below the Oldonyo Loip Ridge looking out on the open plains of the Mara. The ridge is home to many of the big cats and is one of the most important wildlife habitats and migration corridors under protection. Lodge owner, Alfred Korir and his team of mostly Maasai staff will make you feel at home as soon as you arrive. Their standard of service is second to none. So if you fancy setting off on an amazing adventure, look no further. Just take a look at our website here for an amazing deal during June or November 2020.
