During the months of October and November, Pretoria is transformed into a glowing purple mass - the Jacaranda trees are in bloom! Jacarandas line the streets and dot the parks and gardens throughout the city and carpet their floors with their bee-attracting blossoms.

It is estimated that there are between 40 000 and 70 000 Jacaranda trees in Pretoria - nicknamed the Jacaranda City - which choreograph their spectacular show over an eight week period in late spring each year. There are also almost 100 rare white Jacarandas that can be found in Herbert Baker Street in Groenkloof.

Jacarandas are indigenous to South America, but their history in South Africa starts as early as the 1880s when they were imported from Argentina. In 1888 two trees were planted in a school in Arcadia. Their popularity as a street tree soon took off and they now line many kilometres of streets throughout Pretoria.

Jacarandas have become such a large part of Pretoria's culture, that a local radio station has even been named Jacaranda FM. There is also a legend among University of Pretoria students that if a Jacaranda blossom lands on your head, you will pass all your year-end exams.

Sadly, since the Jacaranda tree is exotic, it is considered to be an invader plant, therefore no new trees are allowed to be planted. Recently laws were passed that allow existing trees to be kept, but they may not be replaced when they die.

It was the last week we enjoy the purple show in Brisbane, before the flowering season is over.

The colour of the flowers is often debated — is it indigo, blue or purple?

Well, it's all of them and more as the colour ranges from deeper to lighter shades depending on the specimen, soils and season.

Jacarandas usually blossom around October in Brisbane; however the flowering season has become earlier in the past two decades.

Some speculate that this is due to global warming, with hot weather and an earlier rain season definitely having an impact on when the magnificent trees bloom.

Blooming jacaranda trees in November personify Sydney similarly to sakura in Japan, although the tree is actually a Brazilian import. Its lilac blossoms became popular once horticulturalists worked out how to grow the trees from cuttings in 1868. Tourists dodge the traffic in the most well known streets, here McDougall Street in Kirribilli.

Jacaranda -

In my garden in October

It was getting late and I hadn't taken a photo all day. What was I to do? I still can't decide if this one is ok.

The Jacaranda's are blooming around Sydney and I particulalrly love these Jacaranda trees in Circular Quay. I went for a quick sunrise shoot during the week to capture the sun as it lit them up.

I hope you enjoy this image.

In our neighborhood, each street is lined with a different tree. Our street is lined with Jacarandas. I love them. They bloom these beautiful purple flowers every summer.

I know. Two days back and two shots of flowers. Guess what? I will most likely post flowers tomorrow too.
