Original of Heron on a Branch. You can see how proper cropping (rule of thirds) and in this case a slight blurring of the background help to focus the viewer on the subject of the image. The branch still acts as a leading line, but in the cropped image, this is more dynamic because the branch was only blurred along part of its length.

To take this wonderful shot, I used a kayak as a photo platform. This Blue Heron allowed me to get within 40 feet because I was on the water. I paddled upstream, and then floated closer on the current as still as I could be.

This is the same bird as "Heron on a Branch". It took off upstream as I continued my paddle in that direction. I tried to get past it after taking this shot, but again it flew upstream.
