Ipoh is the capital city of Perak state, Malaysia and also one of the largest cities in the country.
Ipoh developed into one of Malaysia's main cities around the turn of the 19th century due to the booming tin mining industry. During the British colonial era, Ipoh was Malaysia's second city for administrative purposes.
These days Ipoh is perhaps best known for its excellent restaurants, hawkers, and famous local dishes.

This private home is a wonderful example of the exuberant Straits-Eclectic style of architecture favoured by Chinese towkay tycoons in Malaya during the 1920s. Like the homes along Penang's Northam Road, the ostentatious architecture of the homes combined both European and Chinese styles and were intended to trumpet the success of the owners, frequently rags-to-riches Chinese-born miners who had struck lucky in the Kinta tin mines.
This was the home of SH Goh. Although somewhat worn and requiring a lick of paint, its elegance is timeless. The huge mango tree to the right obscures the view of the hexagonal corner of the building - at the time, I was trying to avoid photographing the two high-rise hotels which loom over the house from behind.

On our ride back from Cameron Highlands, Malaysia, we passed by this little town called Ipoh. At the outskirt of the town, there was this limestone hill hovering above a Buddha temple. The sheer vertical drop of its cliff reminded me El Capitan in Yosemite. If you look closely, you can see a Buddha statue and a bat cave about half way up the cliff.

The paintings were painted on old, heritage buildings, an effort i find commendable in preserving these rare gems. The paintings, dated this year, highlight the many cultures of Malaysia: lion dance, kuda kepang dance, Indian dance, a Kadazan; with a pinch of cheekiness with popular childhood games like hide-and-seek and mother hen, and a beautiful waterfall scenery, amongst others.
The wonderful wall art that started in Penang has come to Ipoh. Initiated by art teacher, Eric Lai, who runs an art school Artgene Studio in Bercham, he had just completed his seventh and last mural at the lane in between Jalan Masjid and Jalan Sultan Iskandar (Hugh Low Street).

“We look forward to participating in the Visit Perak Year 2012, by helping provide world-class accommodation at affordable rates to both foreign and domestic tourists to Perak, in particular Ipoh. We have always said that within Malaysia we want to provide the most complete coverage for travellers and businesses and the establishment of Tune Hotel Ipoh is a further step in that direction.”

As an added convenience especially for families with under aged children, there will be interconnecting rooms, a new feature introduced by Tune Hotels at the Ipoh property. The hotel will also house commercial retail outlets including an AirAsia Travel & Service Centre that will cater to the residents of Ipoh and the surrounding areas.
