I played around with a photo in one of the new applications for my iPod Touch, a programme called Sketches. Good fun!
first full day back at home... i missed wattpad... i had 15+ story updates... it took a while but i got caught up!
This photo in downtown Grand Rapids juxtaposes a shiny building in grid pattern to sidewalk tree bare of leaves and composed of branching structure. One exhibits the logic of perpendiculars in glorious isolation from surrounding planetary habitat of living and dying plants and animals. It simply stands out as a thing; or functional object with hints of statuary pretention. The other follows the logic of seeking the sun and adding stature year after year through a set lifespan. One is dead, the other alive. This contrast of black branches at odd angles to the 90-degree angles of the glassy front of the high-rise leads visually to a kind of tension or contradiction: one is all rectilinears and the other excludes those rigid lines. As such this juxtaposition is a kind of metaphor or microcosm of the human built-environment standing against all other living plants and animals, except humans (and service animals) in a mutually exclusive way; a relationship of either artifact or natural, but never a bit of both.
