Politicians from all levels of government attended a funding announcement scheduled for 10 a.m. today at the Via Rail station in Langford. Canada's senior level government announced an injection of $7.5M into the project.
The rail line owner, the Island Corridor Foundation, has been waiting for months for a response from Ottawa to its request for $7.5 million, which would match the amount promised by the province to repair the decaying E&N track. No passenger trains have run on the line since April of last year because of concerns about the track. The E&N’S success depends on a solid business plan and support from the 14 municipalities, 13 First Nations and five regional districts that own the track under the banner of the Island Corridor Foundation (ICF).
Once the necessary track upgrades are finished, the VIA Dayliner will once again serve communities on Vancouver Island. Thank you to Langford Mayor, Stew Young, for hosting this announcement-event in his vibrant community. Much effort was put into preparing the Langford Via Train Station to host the many interested citizens and dignitaries who came out on such a grand morning.
