Davidson Ditch.

"remnants of a project undertaken during the years 1924 to 1929 to bring water to the Fairbanks area gold mining operations. The operation was carried out under the auspices of the Fairbanks Exploration Company (known locally as F.E.), a subsidiary of United States Smelting, Refining and Mining Company (U.S.S.R. & M.).

This project, known as Davidson Ditch, was a 90-mile-long conduit designed to divert water from the Chatanika River [...] to hydraulic sluicing (stripping) operations at Cleary and Goldstream, just north of Fairbanks.

The term "ditch" does not do the project justice because, although the open earthwork section comprised most of its length, the course included a 0.7 mile long tunnel near Fox, and 6.13 miles of inverted siphons along the way. (Anyone who has tried to suck gas from a gasoline tank and drain it into a bucket through a hose knows what a siphon is. It carries fluid over a high point into a lower one. An inverted siphon carries fluid across a low point--in this case, a stream bed, back to a higher one.)

The inverted siphons, which are the pipes visible today, were masterpieces of engineering at the time." Alaska Science Forum

Photo of an old and faded 70s block print "Inverted Personages" by Joan Miró (in my collection)

also known as Figures and Dog in Front of the Sun (1949)

Joan Miró i Ferrà (20 April 1893 – 25 December 1983) was a Spanish painter, sculptor, and ceramicist born in Barcelona. A museum dedicated to his work, the Fundació Joan Miró, was established in his native city of Barcelona in 1975, and another, the Fundació Pilar i Joan Miró, was established in his adoptive city of Palma de Mallorca in 1981.

Earning international acclaim, his work has been interpreted as Surrealism, a sandbox for the subconscious mind, a re-creation of the childlike, and a manifestation of Catalan pride. In numerous interviews dating from the 1930s onwards, Miró expressed contempt for conventional painting methods as a way of supporting bourgeois society, and famously declared an "assassination of painting" in favour of upsetting the visual elements of established painting.

Inverted. Original photo here. Also removed leaves from top left.

In the course of photographing this vinca plant growing happily in one of many flower pots on my girlfriend's balcony (and for the record, also known as a periwinkle), this inverted aphid was not a part of the portrait process. At least I think this critter is an aphid. I'll stand corrected if there are any certified entomologists out there in the cybersphere. At any rate, without the slightest bit of warning, he or she appeared from the back side of the lower left leaf and became what is commonly known as a "photo-crasher" in the photographic parlance. Not a crime, officially, but oftentimes a nuisance.

Although I created a version of this shot where the aphid has been summarily removed, I had second thoughts when posting this image. Why can't an aphid have its 15 minutes of fame,

I thought? A little bit of focused attention for a very minuscule creature. Is that too much to ask in today's world of a bigger-is-always-better philosophy? After all, aphids are people too. Well,

not really. But you get the gist. All life is worthy of some degree of celebration and respect.

and Tapeworms. Throw in terrible automobile drivers if you like.

And, of course, career criminals, as well as other creeps and miscreants. Your list may vary. And significantly lengthen.

"Another name for Solar Inverter is PVInverter. The general function of an inverter is to take current from battery and convert current (AC) to run any common load. In this case, Solar panels are made to convert direct current from a photovoltaic array into alternating current .For more information visit www.ecosmart-solar.com

Trees reflected in a large pond. I liked the way the pond weed created a frame around the trees to create a bit of an enigma in the photo. The photo has been inverted from the way it was taken originally.

This is a shot looking up at one of the corners of the building at 222 Jarvis Street. This building was completed in 1971 in the Brutalist style as Sears Canada headquarters. It's said to look like an inverted pyramid although this isn't the right perspective to see this. Sears sold the building to the Government of Ontario in 2007 and moved into unused space at the Eaton Centre. The Goverment of Ontario is currently renovating the building with the goal of achieving LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) Gold status. It's expected to be completed in the fall of this year.

It was difficult to get very close to this building given the current construction. The rope coming down from the corner kind of bothers me, but I can't remove it and retain the pattern in the brick. I'll have to go back after it's complete to shoot other angles.
