But really, just going to the top of the mountain. My favourite shot of the trip.
This photo was recently named as an honourable mention (top 20 finish) in a National Geographic Competition which thousands of quality photos were posted to. Links coming soon. I won a book out of it about some photographer lady too!
During the height of the pandemic, the "upkeep" of the arboretum we frequently visit was less than thrilling. But it was during the pandemic - so very understandable.
A recent visit to the arboretum gave me flashbacks to that time, as my favorite trail which runs between the lake and this fence is clearly beyond overgrown. If I hadn't known it was a trail, I might have completely avoided this overgrown nightmare.
But, having already dowsed myself in bug spray, I pulled up my big gurl panties and foraged ahead - but took this photo just in case I disappeared, never to be found again.
I have been asked to come up with a large tapestry design for permanent public display, suitable to commemorate the glory that is the Northern Irish/EU deal forged at great personal cost by our selfless and generously pre-tousled clown leader.

A solitary road stretches endlessly through golden fields, framed by a lone tree standing resilient against the vast sky. The horizon whispers of distant adventures, where nature meets the open road in a quiet, sunlit embrace.
“All nature is but art, unknown to thee; All chance, direction, which thou canst not see; All discord, harmony not understood; All partial evil, universal good; And spite of pride, in erring reason's spite, One truth is clear, Whatever is, is right.”
- Alexander Pope
When I accepted that I could not afford storage for large paintings I turned to slides (circa 1980's) for their ability to be projected on a large scale while physically occupying minimal space. It became a whole new area of learning - making small on the scale of gigantic. I sandwiched film and negative, shot collages then adjusted them - and was able to explore the different iterations of a single image by simply flipping it - through the horizontal and/or vertical. Then, using the 2 projector/one screen slide dissolve, I became obsessed with the in-between image, which only existed halfway through the dissolve. So I photographed that.
Bruno: Into the unknown
Into the unknown!
Karen: Bruno, are you singing a song from Frozen 2?
Bruno: Nope. These are just my internal thoughts.
I can hear you but I won't
Some look for trouble while others don't
I have a ton of problems with my impulse control
And skipping out on swimming fills me with me dismay
Karen: Dude, that’s super impressive, but I am confident you’re singing something from Frozen 2.
Bruno: No way. It’s all Bruno all the time here.
You're a lake, I like water around my ears
And if I join you, which I might, It will wet down my fur.
Everyone loves me and knows my thought are small
I'll hurry, secret siren, I will run right down this wall
I am my own adventure, I’d like swimming somewhere new
I'm afraid of what I'm missing if I stay up here
Karen: I’m sure that is from Frozen 2. And when I agreed to take you out in the rain you promised me that it would be a quick peek at the lake to satisfy your curiosity and nothing more. Plus we already pulled in the dock so there’s no more jumping for the year.
Bruno: I don’t know if I am more offended that you pulled the dock in or that you think I’m plagiarizing Disney. Now if you will excuse me, it’s back to my own very original thoughts…

Taking a bit of inspiration from all of the birch trees at our new cabin which my daughter says remind her of the scenery from Frozen 2. Julia does love herself some Frozen 2, so this photo and dogversation (or should I say Dogversong?) were inspired by her and written for her.
Thanks you to my lovely wife for standing in the rain at the cabin to get this shot of him staring into the unknown.
In case anyone needs a song to rattle around their brain for the next six months or so - here is the link to the original from Frozen 2.
