I LEAVE FOR AJMER SHARIF IN A FEW HOURS - WONT BE ON THE NET TILL 2 JULY 2009...

I had written a poem , and I needed a picture and I did not want a typical jehadi terrorist picture, so I asked this young lad to model for my poems subject, ..

The poem was a comment on Akbar Simonese's picture of ladies wearing scarves on a street in Amsterdam.

Scarves are worn by quite a few communities in India, the checkered scarf is a product of the Arab states and worn as a head gear, in the early 70's the Texan Americans who worked in Daharan called this a rag head..

Than it became a kind of fashion statement as Arafat wore it, and finally , the jehaddis who kidnapped and terrorized wore it like women to hide their face , not their shame, so the scarf became a sartorial symbol of death and destruction in the name of Allah and misplaced Martyrdom..

This is the story of the male Musim scarf.. ladies wear scarves too along with the burkha or hijab, a symbol of their faith and a dress code of their ancestry as a woman in Islam.

Hindus also wear scarves called ghamchas , in tiny checks and part of a poor mans attire in Uttar Pradesh..

now my poem

head scarves always in the news

muslim women wear them

as they have been culturally

taught to do

some muslim terrorists wear it

I made the wall of shadow draw back,

beyond desire and act, I walked on."

~Pablo Neruda (The Song of Despair)

10 years… and now, this teen decade is about to pale away.

These 10 years – it seems – inherited all the madness and evil hopelessness around the globe from previous decades. Wars, genocides, and intolerance are stiffly frozen in place… the only thing that’s melting are polar ice caps. Yet, meekly, hope lingers on. A child's toothless smile still melts our heart, an afternoon rain still makes rainbows, and you still post photos on flickr!

10 years… that’s how long I have now been on flickr.

During this decade, it’s been my fabulous fortune to find so many wonderful friends on flickr. Among them, some stayed, some left, but a few remain etched deep within. I learned from each and every one of you… sometimes through direct correspondence (ahh, how much I cherish them would you ever know?!), and at other times, in deep meditative silence from your photos. If I had to count my good fortune, I would count each one of you thrice. These ten years have seen me go through my share of fire and ice. So many times, I have lost hope. And then… found it again. Sometimes, right here… while staring at one of your photos or comments.

So, here is my last post of the year dedicated to you. You, my dear flickr friends, are marvelous rays of light in the fog. To you all, I softly say… thank you!

See y’all in 2020.

PS: I have put together ten of my most memorable 2019 moments here. Take a look if you have a minute to spare.

"

La colère est la plus puissante des passions. Elle conduit à des excès en paroles et en actes : violence, meurtre, insulte, vengeance, etc.

La colère nait de l’envie et s’accompagne de haine."

"I don't want to be, hostile.

I don't want to be, dismal.

But I don't want to, rot in,

an apathetic existance.

See I want to, believe you,

and I want to, trust you,

and I want to have, faith to,

put away the dagger.

But (you lie, cheat, and steal.)

And yet I tolerate you.

But (you lie, cheat, and steal.)

And yet I tolerate you."

Should we get the technical shizz out of the way first? Great, let's make it technical because in this whole discourse it's the facts and not the emotions, the reason and logic, not the faith that we need to float to the top. Yes this is flat food and I love flat food. I want to explore if flat is enough or are there other things to consider?

Here's a fact: Flaxseed gum can be used as a setting agent. We ought test then whether this is the best answer or just an answer.

The gum component of flaxseed is about 8 per cent by weight. Don't expect that much yield unless you have a unicorn handy to help with extraction efficiency. That slimy goop that oozes out of soaking flaxseed is a polysaccharide mix composed of xylose, arabinose, glucose, galactose, galacturonic acid, rhamnose and fucose — whatever they are. Really important to understand is that this stuff is hydrophilic — once it gets hold of that water it really wants to hang on to it. It'll stay gloopy.

When you cook with wheat flour or egg, heat is used to produce changes in the proteins that make bonds. Those coagulated proteins give whatever you are cooking its structure; the strength to hold it together. Flaxseed gum doesn't set with heat. What gets it into the mood for binding things together is losing that water it absorbed in the extraction process. There's the rub! Being strongly hydrophilic it selfishly wants to hang onto that water; to not give it back. There are two ways you can get that water out in your kitchen — both use evaporation and heat. But you can't rush it — each is low and slow.

I made these seed crackers in an oven. You can see here they are furrowed; scored with a blade so they will snap when done because they'll be too crisp to cut. I didn't need to make them at all. But I wanted to try, and to learn. I learned a LOT. My oven is BIG and for this batch of crackers it needed to run for between 1.5-2 hours at 170°C. That's a lot of energy and just how tightly the gum was hanging onto the 2 cups of water in the recipe.

I'm not really cooking. This is dehydrating and that's another way to approach this recipe. The mix could be spread out in my dehydrator. Then instead of maybe two hours I could have it running for something like 24 hours — a whole day of power consumption to make one little box of seed crackers. Hmmm?

Some people need this kind of recipe. Food allergies are real: salicylates, gluten, crustaceans, tomatoes, peanuts etc can make people really ill. Some like lactose intolerance, that thing with broad beans, a genetic variant which makes coriander undesirable etc aren't going to kill you, just spoil your day. Then there's the ideologues who for whatever reason develop philosophical rather than biological approaches to diet. Here I will take the lead from ABC TV's Kate McLennan and Kate McCartney — a food intolerant and an intolerable foodie. For whatever reason you have to deviate from a conventional diet you really should have a reason which makes better outcomes, not intolerable ones.

I've been a self-reliant cook: water collection, fuel, food production, harvesting, breeding, slaughter, processing, preservation, the works. If you do work to collect and process your fuel for cooking you want efficiency. You don't want to burn more than you need to feed yourself because of a rash of ideology. This stuff is HARD work. I'll go further. If you are using fossil fuels to feed your ideology in the mistaken belief that if you don't eat meat, go gluten-free because it's bad for some people or you forage for weeds or that vegan will save the world then you had better take an introspective look at yourself in the room of mirrors. "Frankenfood", like these crackers is the fodder of ideologues and the green-washing fraternity marketing these tropes.

I'll explain. First of all, every component in these crackers was imported except for 2 cups of water, 2 tablespoons of sugar and 1 teaspoon of salt. They were carried around the world in a petroleum-fuelled contrivance, wrapped in petroleum derived plastic…and on and on. That CO₂ you might have saved by not eating meat? Yeah, it got made by baking or dehydrating, by freight, by falsehoods. Even if I had a solar drier or all the electricity for appliances was made from a source which made no emissions…quieten down now…I still have to somehow offset the transport emissions AND the emissions from mining, transport, refining, fabrication and transport of the devices which generated and transported that electricity! It's a minefield!! Likewise let's look at whether you saved a cow, a chicken etc. Well, no, you didn't. The cuddly little animals exist because they were bred for a need. The loss of diversity in domestic animals has come about precisely for this reason. If the market for something goes away, nobody breeds it and it dies out. Want to save kangaroos so you oppose shooting them? Actually the best way to ensure that we value kangaroos is to eat them. Then someone will protect them because they can earn an income.

We need to do better if we want to save the planet. If we travel to forage or hunt by any means because we live in a concrete jungle then that's a lifestyle. If we have a forest outside our door, a garden, even a weed patch…that's a sustainable resource — zero food miles. We have to choose to eat locally, not ideologically. These crackers were yummy and yet they were so utterly wrong in their self-indulgent way that they left a bitter taste in my mouth. I won't cook them again because in all their smug marketing they did more harm than good.

PROTEST RESIST ORGANISE SUBVERT

The time has come for us to take back control of our lives and communities.

The time has come for us to show those who think they are in authority who is really in charge.

The time has come to fight for a better life that the one we have now.

For years we have endured the intolerance and injustice of the Norsefire regime. They have imprisoned and tortured comrades with impunity, abused those culture and skin colour they detest and denied ordinary workers their basic rights.

This time we say no, this time we fight back in the name of freedom, justice and self - determination. Already communities in London, Liverpool, Manchester, Bolton, Bristol and many other cities and towns have seized control of their neighbourhoods and so created autonomous areas where they decide on their own destinies.

While so many remain unattended in the so called quarantine zones, instead of sending doctors and medicine the government has sent soldiers and tanks in a futile attempt to restore order. Thousand more lay sick and dying and they bomb us, shell our homes, attack us where we live.

It’s time for us to resist this aggression in the only way they will understand. It is time to take up arms and fight.

They have tanks, we have justice.

They have planes, we have solidarity.

They have artillery, we have nothing to lose.

This is one of the first "good" pictures I took after becoming interested in photography, this was taken with my little $80 GE point and shoot and I remember the joy I felt when I saw this full size for the first time....I was so happy!!!!!!

I've been thrust into a very uncomfortable position with the pro/con Explore people which is unfair as I really don't have anything against either side.

I'm not a very sociable (some say hermit:-) person outside of Flickr and I really would miss it if I was to leave so for now at least I'm staying for the FUN and the NICE interaction I have here on Flickr and will no longer tolerate intolerance, so if you need to complain for or against Explore find another venue please as my stream is closed to negativity :-))

And the dream gained white and black wings and flew to the horizon of hope without ever losing its breath, without ever looking back ... and surpassed the walls of indifference, the storms of intolerance and the mountains of fear ... after all it he was not alone, he was accompanied by all the dreams of past generations, all the dreams of future generations!

More than ever it is in times when we are more divided that it is more necessary to join hands to face those who want to divide us even more...

The Hollywood & Highland Center is an entertainment complex at Hollywood Boulevard and Highland Avenue in the Hollywood district in Los Angeles. The 387,000-square-foot (36,000 m2) center also includes Grauman's Chinese Theatre and the Kodak Theatre, home to the Academy Awards. The historic site was once the home of the famed Hollywood Hotel. Located in the heart of Hollywood, along the Hollywood Walk of Fame, it is among the most visited tourist destinations in Los Angeles.

Formerly the site of the legendary Hollywood Hotel which, built in 1903, was torn down in 1956, it is now a huge, sprawling shopping mall that also houses the Kodak Theatre, Oscar's first permanent home. A lot of money has gone into this controversial project, whose design might not be to everyone's liking. However, it is nevertheless an indicator of Hollywood's comeback as it encouraged other investors that Hollywood Boulevard has ceased to be the scruffy dive it had been for so many years. As a reference to Hollywood's rich and irretrievably lost past, the architecture includes replicas of D.W. Griffith's Babylonian set for his film Intolerance, which was shot just two miles east on the intersection of Sunset and Hollywood Boulevards. This fact, however, may be lost on the casual visitor who, unless they are familiar with Griffith's epochal film, are more likely to be startled by the fake elephants and references to ancient Egypt.

Yellow Springs, Ohio, 2021

I met this young man and his dog in Yellow Springs, Ohio. Southwest Ohioans call Yellow Springs a hippie town. My mother lived there and attended Antioch College in the 1960s and loved it.

In my experience, it is a diverse, tolerant, friendly, open, and happy community where even stray cats are well-fed and provided with health care by the residents. The only thing "Springers" will not tolerate is intolerance and bigotry. Oh, and large corporate entities. The village has no Walmart, for example.

According to Wikipedia, in 1862, it welcomed a group of 30 freed slaves previously owned by Moncure D. Conway, the abolitionist son of their former owner.

By the late 1960s and early '70s, the village became a center of activity for the Civil Rights Movement and anti-war movement in southwestern Ohio.

In 1979, Yellow Springs held the distinction of being the smallest municipality to pass an ordinance prohibiting discrimination based on sexual orientation. As of 2014, it had the largest LGBT population of all Ohio's villages.

I love this town and its people.

I have received some very kind mail from Flickr friends enquiring after Jonathan and myself and also the plumbing. Starting with the plumbing my very good plumber friend has long Covid so we await his recovery to replace our downstairs toilet that has a cracked basin but we have another so can manage to wait till he is fully recovered. My own tests revealed high cholesterol and type 2 diabetes for which medication has been prescribed but I am holding off and hoping to lose some weight and have been given six months to hopefully reverse things and stave off the meds which unfortunately my family have an intolerance too. Jonathan’s tests were what we (I) wait anxiously for as he still has low oxygen levels several times a day…low enough to mean something serious could be the problem. He had all the tests ECG chest X-ray and full bloods but only one ambiguous text to say one test had come back normal. Telephone enquiries only elicit the response that all test results are now sent by text. We were booked on holiday and Jonathan refuses to wait any longer for the results saying que sera sera…so we kept the already altered twice booking which is for three weeks but the WiFi is totally abysmal even blocking me by saying not only insecure but stopping me using my own discretion. This is uploaded using mobile data but again far to slow to comment and for biggest part even “see” your photos so I shall wait till I return home to hopefully rejoin the Flickr community. Hope you are all well and enjoying the summer..all the best Sue

created for: Surrealart challenge " Robossance "

Based on 'The Creation of Adam' by Michelangelo Buonarroti

Unfortunately removed from the comp by the admin Jaci XIII due to her apparent religious intolerance and discrimination. "

JaciXIII's email:

"Hi jormit1

I'm glad that you have resolved to participate in our current challenge in Surrealart Group.

But your picture, with the painting of Michelangelo showing the creation of Adam by God the Father, deserves some repairs. As for the picture of Adam, that is fine, but the representation of God the Father Creator, as a robot is succeptible to an interpretation of disrespect to our faith. I ask you not to be offended, but I have to watch over the harmony of the group. If you cut only Adam's photo, you'll be great for the challenge.

Kind regards.

Jaci XIII"

I declined to censor the image, as the image was created totally within the brief given by jaci XIII, and I was somewhat affronted by her apparent assertion that there was only one religion followed universally.

" Hi Jaci XIII,

I'm a bit unsure how to respond to your email.

I've read & re-read the brief given for the comp, and believe I've followed the brief correctly, ie 'you will have to choose a work of art from the Renaissance, it may be painting or sculpture, but it will have to be from this period, and merge with robot parts, to give this surreal appearance'.

I cannot find any reference to excluding particular images, or parts of images, from the Renaissance period.

If you feel the image is so offensive, then I guess it's your prerogative to remove it. Personally, I would like to think that people would see art for art's sake, and not censor on the basis of personal whims or beliefs.

It would probably be an idea to make sure restrictions based on your faith are entered into the brief

Cheers,

Tim"

jaci XIII removed/censored my image, and posted a somewhat incoherent rant on her Surealart site www.flickr.com/groups/2676496@N21/discuss/72157694521457564/.

I have subsequently resigned from jaci XIII's "Surealart" group in disgust, and have posted the image in multiple groups to gauge how sensible people would view it (personally, I see nothing wrong with it, and certainly meant no offense when creating it, and have had nil negative feedback - apart from the aforementioned histrionic and offensive diatribe from jaci XIII).

The only (many) responses have been positive.

I have been extremely saddened & distressed by jaci XIII's actions.

In its uncultivated form, wild cabbage, native to coastal southern and western Europe, is a hardy plant with high tolerance for salt and lime. However, its intolerance of competition from other plants typically restricts its natural occurrence to limestone sea cliffs, like the chalk cliffs on both sides of the English Channel. Wild B. oleracea is a tall biennial plant that forms a stout rosette of large leaves in the first year. The leaves are fleshier and thicker than other Brassica species—an adaptation that helps it store water and nutrients in its difficult growing environment. In its second year, it uses the stored nutrients to produce a flower spike 1 to 2 metres (3–7 ft) tall with numerous yellow flowers.

In the Belmonte City Hall internet page

cm-belmonte.pt/en/history/jewish-community-in-belmonte/

we can read:

QUOTE

The community of Belmonte is home to an important fact of the Sephardic Jewish history, related to the resistance of the Jews to religious intolerance in Iberian Peninsula. In the 16th century, during the expulsion of the moors of the Iberian Peninsula, and the reconquest of the Spanish and Portuguese lands by the Catholic Kings and by D. Manuel, a law was instituted that forced the Portuguese Jews to convert or leave the country. Many of them ended up abandoning Portugal, for fear of reprisals from the Inquisition. Others converted to Christianity in official terms, maintaining their cult and cultural traditions in the family context. A third group of Jews, however, took a more extreme measure. Several have decided to isolate themselves from the outside world, cutting contact with the rest of the country and following their traditions to the letter. Such people were called “Marranos”, in an allusion to the ritual prohibition of eating pork. For centuries the “Marranos” of Belmonte have kept their Jewish traditions almost intact, becoming an exceptional case of cryptojewish community. Only in the 70´s the community established contact with the Jews of Israel and officiated Judaism as its religion. In 2005, the Jewish Museum of Belmonte was inaugurated in the city, the first of its kind in Portugal, which shows the traditions and the day-to-day of this community. In August 2017, he underwent remodeling works.

Why Are People Embarrassed By Flatulence?

Flatulence, or passing gas, is a natural bodily function that occurs when the digestive system breaks down food and produces gas as a byproduct. Despite being a natural process, many people feel embarrassed or ashamed when they pass gas in public or around others.

One reason people might feel embarrassed by flatulence is due to social norms and expectations around bodily functions. In many cultures, passing gas is considered impolite and rude, and people may view it as a sign of poor manners or lack of self-control. Additionally, flatulence can be associated with unpleasant smells, which can further add to feelings of embarrassment and discomfort.

Another reason people may feel embarrassed by flatulence is due to personal beliefs or insecurities. Some people may feel ashamed of their bodily functions or believe that passing gas is dirty or inappropriate. Others may be worried about being judged or ridiculed by others for their flatulence.

In some cases, medical conditions such as irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) or lactose intolerance can cause excessive flatulence, which can be embarrassing and disruptive to daily life. In these situations, seeking medical advice and treatment may help alleviate the symptoms and reduce feelings of embarrassment.

Overall, the embarrassment surrounding flatulence is often a result of social and cultural norms, personal beliefs and insecurities, and the potential for unpleasant smells. However, it's important to remember that passing gas is a normal and natural bodily function, and there's no need to feel ashamed or embarrassed about it.

At the end of the day to most of us it's just funny.

The developer of the shopping center built part of the archway and two pillars with elephant sculptures on the capitals, just as seen in the film, to the same full scale. It gives visitors an idea of how large the original set must have been.

The center has over 70 shops and 25 restaurants. Major retail tenants that face Hollywood Boulevard include American Eagle Outfitters, Forever 21, GAP, and Sephora. The complex also houses a Lucky Strike Lanes bowling alley, a six-plex movie theater, and a nightclub.

Hollywood & Highland also houses 65,000 square feet (6,000 m2) of gathering spaces including the Grand Ballroom, used for the Oscars Governors Ball. Celebrity chef Wolfgang Puck operates his regional headquarters out of the complex. The center also includes television broadcast facilities that in 2004 included the studios for the daily talk show On Air With Ryan Seacrest. Currently, the studio is home to Revolt TV.

The 637-room Loews Hollywood Hotel is also part of the site. The LACMTA Red Line's subway station of the same name is beneath the structure. Also, Metro Local lines 212, 217, 222, 237, 656 and Metro Rapid 780 serve Hollywood & Highland.

At this site of the cathedral was my bus stop to school, where I had to change the line. On rainy days these dragon-like figures spouted all waters of heaven on me. On dry days they seemed to spit the odour of intolerance.

The Sacrifice - The Rise of Fascism by Daniel Arrhakis (2018, 2021)

The rise of Neo-fascists disguised as Populists and Patriots threatens the fundamental freedoms of citizens and Democracy itself in Europe and the rest of the World! Its objective: to divide the Peoples through fear and intolerance but mainly to make Authoritarianism and Fascism acceptable again!

Imaginemos

Feliz año nuevo a todos

My wish for this coming year is the removal of barriers cold envy selfishness and intolerance that dominate the human being to reign in the world peace and equality among all.

Imagine

Happy New Year to all

I have really been struggling with what has been happening in our country over the past three weeks. I don't ever remember there being a time of such hatred, disrespect and intolerance. When I saw these tulips at the grocery store last weeks I decided to bring a couple of bunches home, just to reassure me there is still beauty in the world.

Edmonton, CANADÀ 2024

The presence of Anne Frank in Edmonton is commemorated through several elements, focused on her story as a Holocaust victim and a symbol of hope.

Key Points:

Commemorative Statue: A bronze statue of Anne Frank is located in Light Horse Park (in the Old Strathcona area). It is a replica of the original sculpture by Dutch artist Pieter d'Hont. The statue in Light Horse Park was donated in 2021 by the Dutch Canadian Club Edmonton to honour Holocaust victims and Canada's role in the liberation of the Netherlands.

Travelling Exhibition: The Anne Frank House's travelling exhibition, "Anne Frank: A History for Today", has been hosted by the Edmonton Public Schools Archives and Museum (located in McKay Avenue School), bringing the history of the Holocaust and Anne Frank's story to the community and students.

Symbolism: These memorials and exhibitions serve as a powerful reminder of resilience, courage, and the importance of tolerance in the face of intolerance.

People around in the 1970s will probably remember the children's TV programme Magpie which was ITV's rival to Blue Peter. The theme tune was a variation of the ancient song interpreting what numbers of magpies might foretell. There are many variants of this song but my home county Lancashire's version was:

One for sorrow, two for mirth

Three a wedding, four a birth

Five for rich, six for poor

Seven for a witch, I can tell you no more

Well that was the polite version that children sang but the original was Eight for a whore In Lancashire (where poor and whore rhymed with sewer). The TV theme song was rather different and only included nice things. Interestingly, nesting Magpies are intensely territorial but young birds without a territory go around in flocks, and it is these non-breeders that lead to big counts that must have generated the rhyme. You cannot imagine a similar song for up to eight Robins existing given their intolerance of other Robins.

People are often alarmed by seeing large groups of Magpies but these are usually non-breeding birds that cannot find an unoccupied territory. One study shot Magpies and analysed their stomach contents during the nesting season and found that these flock birds were mainly eating worms, flies and beetles, the same as they do outside the nesting season. This contrasted with territorial nesting Magpies that are aware of nesting songbird activity near to their nests and will often predate these nests. I photographed this one in my garden.

After periods of Burgundian (1384-1477) and Hapsburg (1482-1556) domination, the Netherlands passed into Spanish hands. In 1568 their oppressive taxation and religious intolerance – the Dutch had embraced Protestantism, their rulers remained resolutely Catholic – sparked a revolt led by William I, Prince of Orange. In 1581 the Dutch declared independence. Although the Eighty Years’ War with Spain continued until 1648, the young Republic flourished. By the mid-seventeenth century it was Europe’s leading maritime power, with income from global trade and a growing overseas empire fuelling a Golden Age of affluence, industry, science and art.
