All my love for Istanbul in the difficult times of attacks and intolerance, June 2016

As an ideal image of the religion of tolerance, peace and love on the one hand, it is all too easy to contrast this with a caricature of the religion of intolerance, violence and hatred, in which only few need to step out of line.

Ferruginous Hawks head south for the winter, so I was surprised to see this one on a frosty morning with fresh snow on our northern prairie. It was on the ground when I noticed it. I pulled to a stop and just managed to find the focus when it launched. A catch light in the eye would have been nice, but that didn't happen.

On the next outing, I saw four of them along one of the grid roads, lined up in a row, each on a different power pole. Maybe I was wrong about their intolerance to winter weather.

The real cold had not arrived, though. Yesterday it was -20°C with no hawks in view. More "transition season" photos to come...

Brassica oleracea is a plant species that includes many common cultivars, such as cabbage, broccoli, cauliflower, kale, Brussels sprouts, collard greens, Savoy cabbage, kohlrabi, and gai lan.

In its uncultivated form, it is called wild cabbage, and is native to coastal southern and western Europe. A hardy plant in its uncultivated form, its high tolerance for salt and lime, and its intolerance of competition from other plants, typically restrict its natural occurrence to limestone sea cliffs, like the chalk cliffs on both sides of the English Channel, and the windswept coast on the western side of the Isle of Wight. Genetic analysis of nine wild populations on the French Atlantic coast indicated their common feral origin, deriving from domesticated plants escaped from fields and gardens.

The little warrior of the light lands in the new year

ready to stand up to the forces of darkness…

So much change in the world, so many clamoring for their piece of the pie…

but I think this is the time we need to stand together. There is enough to go around.

In all worlds, we need to stand up to injustice, intolerance, inequality, and hate.

We need to lift one another up. Be honest. Be compassionate. Be kind.

No one is better than anyone else and we need to stand strong against those who try to convince any of us otherwise.

I stand beside you. We are not alone.

And the little big prince shares...

And I don't know how much it really means to be right

But what a joy it'd be to see some peace in this life

And it occurs to me that maybe we ain't ever really seeing it right

Here in the dark

Hoping just to see a beam of the light.

The world will not be destroyed by those who do evil, but by those who watch them without doing anything.

In any and all lives.

We are one.

I don’t know whether you can see through the window that the mist is beginning to roll in. I predict that by Friday, January 20th there will be thick fog over most of the known world, a fog of hate, despair and intolerance, a fog that’s unlikely to lift for the next four years, and maybe, heaven help us, for the next eight years. Second Life will, I guess, continue to be my escape from despondency – no swamps freshly filled with alligators here!

Explanation in English:

The writing in German is very funny because it features a pun: "Lackdose" (spray can) sounds almost like "Laktose". So the statement actually says "Against spray can intolerance" instead of "Against lactose intolerance".

We are not the silent minority. We are the vocal majority and we will not stand for racism, sexism, or any level of intolerance towards immigrants, women, those with disabilities, people with different sexual orientations, and those of different cultures. Let's keep our cities safe places to live.

My best wishes for all my flickr friends and for all your families. I wish also for the end of wars, hate, intolerance, violence, corruption and lies. A special wish for a stop in the war in Syria.

Hope the light will surround your hearts and souls.

For weak and for strong (if you want it)

For rich and the poor ones (war is over)

And so happy Xmas (war is over)

For black and for white (if you want it)

For yellow and red ones (war is over)

Let's stop all the fight (now)"

'After being a member of the Labour party for sixty years Jenny Manson, co-Chair of Jewish Voice for Labour, has had enough.

She has resigned.

She first joined as a “Young Socialist” in 1965. In reaction to Labour’s discriminatory policy towards immigrants she and others were part of a self-styled “Disaffiliated Labour” group at Oxford in 1966 though none of them resigned individually.

Active in her local Labour party, a branch chair etc, she was a Labour councillor in Barnet 1986 to 1990 and prospective parliamentary candidate in Hendon North in 1987. In 2018 again, backed by Momentum and local JVL supporters she put her name in the ring to be PPC for Finchley and Golders Green in 2018. John McDonnell supported her but, in the face of near violent opposition from right-wing anti-Corbyn Labour members locally, she decided rather to focus on her work with Jewish Voice for Labour.

But now enough is enough.

In her resignation statement Jenny says

The Labour government has failed to recognise the genocide in Gaza or to take any action against the full scale of all the Israeli government’s war crimes.

It is also impossible to support a party that has abandoned all ethical standards and betrayed the vulnerable. The government courts and copies the right. I am the daughter of a refugee. The Labour cabinet demonises refugees and all other immigrants, and feeds xenophobia, racism and intolerance.

She goes on to refer to the refusal of Keir Starmer and Yvette Cooper to respond to the letter 300 plus Jews wrote to them on 5th August:

“At ‘Your Show’ in Liverpool on September 29th and the press conference for the “the wrong sort of Jews…are right” on the morning of 30th September, I will call out HMG for its contemptuous rebuff of the letter signed by more that 300 Jews, addressed to Keir Starmer and Yvette Cooper demanding action to support the Palestinian people.”

This letter of 5th August 25 (linked to below as Appendix 1 )was updated with additional signatures on 12th August. Its opening words were:

“We are Jews who oppose the genocide by Israel against the Palestinian people, the reality of which is agonisingly on show every day on radio, television and social media. Opposing the brutality of genocide, apartheid, and ethnic cleansing taking place in Gaza and the West Bank, including taking direct action, is not antisemitic. Nor is it terrorism. We consider the proscription of Palestine Action as illegitimate and unethical.”' - www.jewishvoiceforlabour.org.uk/article/jenny-manson-co-c... ▪️▪️▪️▪️▪️Llyn Trawsfynydd, Meirionnydd Gwynedd

On May 12 it's ME/CFS and Fibromyalgia International Awareness Day.

M.E. Awareness Week was established by patient advocates and is focused on May 12th, the birthday of Florence Nightingale, who was believed to have suffered with M.E.

I am a real-life Aesthetician and am currently working on getting accepted into medical school in the hopes of becoming a Dermatologist someday. So, needless to say, skincare is my passion!

Our skin tells us so much about our health; like if we're getting enough hydration, sleep, too much or too little sun, etc. It can even tell us about our intolerances and gut health! I know a lot of people forget about their skin, thinking it's just "there" and that people who obsess about their skin are superficial, but remember... your skin is the biggest organ of your body and is the first line of defense to bacteria, viruses, and toxins!

So, if you're having skin issues, I am your girl! I will analyze your skin through a series of questions, or pictures (if you feel comfortable with that) and provide care recommendations. I have extensive knowledge of over 20 product lines including, Obagi, Farmacy, Elemis, Byroe, The Ordinary, Glow Recipe and so many more!

Book a consultation with me and let me guide you onto the path of beautiful and radiant skin! My IW Name: BijouNoirr

*If you are under the care of a dermatologist for an auto-immune skin disorder like psoriasis, scleroderma, dermatomyositis, etc. I cannot provide care recommendations as that is above my knowledge and qualification! Come back and see me in 6 years or so, :) .*

Loving kindness is the path to happiness.

Anger, hatred, misogyny, bigotry, and intolerance towards others never brings true happiness for yourself or others.

Children at this age no nothing of hatred, intolerance, bigotry, etc. They know only discovery of things new and different. This photo was taken a few years ago, she is in school now and probably witnessing those things she does not understand, let's pray she finds goodness in all she learns and carries decent values as she grows. Who knows? It's only hope and a wish from this Old Man's thoughts........Dan Sobkowiak.

if a picture is 6 years old and you like it when you rediscover it and you don't have time for flickr that day, is it allowed to post it again ?

We are learning from our English and American friends here. While Germans often do such things "secretly" and hope not to be "caught", I learned that they sometimes post the same picture here several times for some reason and also point it out ... how much good can we learn from each other ...

unless it's about populism, splitting, polarizing, intolerance, abolishing democracy and solving politics with the gun and murder, inciting and not being able to lose and getting and staying in power at any price and introducing a very bad climate into society with alternative truths etc ...

;-) ...

Salem Witch Hysteria..1692. Due to intolerance and isolationism, religious extremism, accusations, and lapses in due process of the law, the hysteria swept through Massachusetts. More than 200 were accused, of which 19 were hanged here in Salem.. Since the hysteria was carried out under the guise of religionious indifference, I used the Witch Museum window from an earlier image, flic.kr/p/2gqVdoz, as a metaphor for the false imprisonment, an image of the witch from a past Haunted Happenings...some layers, blending, and masking to get the image.

This is a shot I almost didn't get. Out of the corner of my eye I saw a glint of golden light. As I turned, this cross in the distance was being illuminated by the golden sunset light. The reflection on the polished granite was so fine it almost made the cross glow. Not wanting to waste a second I pointed my zoom lens and took the shot. And in seconds the light was gone.

***COMMENT***

I just have to make a remark here that backs up what I said about the disappearance of Christian symbolism in graveyards. Instead of seeing this as a photograph that shows off a remarkable coincidence of light, some people and groups have rejected it outright because it is deemed an "offensive" Christian symbol. I'd have had higher view numbers if I posted a picture of my breakfast that morning - that's Flickr for you. Why is it only Christian religious symbols are deemed offensive in Western societies now? It is fine to have a society open to all religions, I support that without qualification, but that should not mean discriminating against anything Christian. In any case, this is not a Christian photograph, merely one that shows off the light and my composition. If you do not like these sorts of photographs, PLEASE stop following me now! I will never give in to intolerance, especially the kind that rejects a past heritage that made our civilisation great.

International Holocaust Remembrance Day, January 27

The UN General Assembly designated January 27—the anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau—as International Holocaust Remembrance Day. To remember this day gives us a task for everyday: to counter antisemitism, racism, and other forms of intolerance that lead to violation of human rights.

What makes a true New Zealander? There was a national high school speech contest yesterday. Second place went to a lad from Dunedin. A part of his speech rang very true with me (From our home newspaper )https://www.odt.co.nz/news/national/three-ingredients-make-true-kiwi

"Runner-up George Sabonadiere, of Logan Park High School, in Dunedin, said racism was a beast that could not be tamed.

"When the economy was collapsing, Hitler blamed the Jews. When industry wasn't productive enough, Stalin went after the Poles.

"But the people who buy these ideas are not inherently evil. They are poisoned by fear, plagued with ignorance and blinded by hatred. So we cannot simply shun them ... Don't feed the beast with the crumbs of intolerance. Simply understand.''

One of the most striking characteristics of Druidism is the degree to which it is free of dogma and any fixed set of beliefs or practices. When are we going to realize that hate, intolerance, greed and superiority only harm our society. The only way forward to achieve peace is to come together, discuss our differences, try and understand one another and work towards mutual solutions. We are all human beings and none of us are better than the other. It is time to realize that we are all an important part of the whole and therefore it is our duty to our children to work together with respect and compassion.

I met this young man and his dog in Yellow Springs, Ohio. Southwest Ohioans call Yellow Springs a hippie town. My mother lived there and attended Antioch College in the 1960s and loved it.

In my experience, it is a diverse, tolerant, friendly, open, and happy community where even stray cats are well-fed and provided with health care by the residents. The only thing "Springers" will not tolerate is intolerance and bigotry. Oh, and large corporate entities. The village has no Walmart, for example.

According to Wikipedia, in 1862, it welcomed a group of 30 freed slaves previously owned by Moncure D. Conway, the abolitionist son of their former owner.

By the late 1960s and early '70s, the village became a center of activity for the Civil Rights Movement and anti-war movement in southwestern Ohio.

In 1979, Yellow Springs held the distinction of being the smallest municipality to pass an ordinance prohibiting discrimination based on sexual orientation. As of 2014, it had the largest LGBT population of all Ohio's villages.

I love this town and its people.

Galileo Galilei was an important Italian scientist, physicist, mathematician, astronomer and philosopher. His scientific contribution started a new era in the history of astronomy, he was the first astronomer to access new knowledge using the telescope. He defended the concept that the Earth was not the center of the universe.

Galileo Galilei was born in Pisa, Italy, on February 15, 1564, son of Vincenzo Galilei and Julia Ammannati. His parents noticed Galilei's great intelligence and special aptitudes from an early age. The boy showed an interest in the arts and performed excellent paintings, demonstrating manual skill and creativity to manufacture toys and contraptions. He played the organ and zither with aplomb. Thus, Galilei excelled in studies at the Sunday school in Vallombrosa and planned to enter the monastery, but his father did not agree with the idea and enrolled him to study medicine at the University of Pisa. Two years after joining, he dropped out of the course and went to dedicate himself to the study of mathematics. The move did not please his father, and Galilei ended up dropping out of the University in 1585. He did not complete any degrees, but in the same year he went to Florence and began giving private lessons to support himself. He stood out for his research in geometry and continued with his mathematical studies.

It was at this time that he invented the hydrostatic balance, a mechanism that would be published in a detailed treatise in the year 1644. In 1589, in recognition of his scientific contributions and brilliant reasoning, he was appointed to the chair of mathematics at the University of Pisa. He was not welcomed by teachers, as he was only 25 years old, had incomplete academic training and publicly discredited Aristotle's established theories. In 1590 Galilei published a treatise on the motion of bodies. In 1591 he was removed from the professorship, after succumbing to intrigues and disputes with Aristotle's supporters. In 1592 he was appointed by the Senate of Venice to teach mathematics at the University of Padua, a position he would hold for 18 years. In 1609 he built a telescope based on the one previously invented by Hans Lippershey in Holland. Galilei made meticulous observations of the sky and incredible discoveries: he located the four largest moons of Jupiter and the mountains and craters on the Moon's surface. And when he detected spots present on the Sun's surface, the discovery helped to prove his theory that the star rotated on an axis. He investigated Saturn and observed what appeared to be two fixed moons, which were the edges of Saturn's ring system, but Galilei's telescope was not accurate enough to determine exactly what those points were.

His findings were collected and published in March 1610 in the book “The Messenger of the Stars”. The work was acclaimed and also generated much controversy, as Galilei publicly defended Nicolaus Copernicus' theory that the Sun was the center of our Solar System, not the Earth. At that time, the Catholic Church fully controlled science and held the opposite view, that the center was the Earth.

In 1616 Galilei was cornered by the authorities of the Inquisition and threatened with the death penalty if he did not publicly deny the scientific truths he had proved. He was expressly prohibited from teaching and propagating ideas that were contrary to the position of the Church. Even so, in 1632 he published the "Dialogue Concerning the Two Greatest Systems of the Universe", causing the Church's total rejection and intolerance. Prevented from continuing with his research and theories, the scientist retired to his castle located in Arcetri, a village near Florence, where he dedicated himself to pursuing his experiments alone.

Galileo Galilei died on January 8, 1642 in Arcetri, Italy. He was almost blinded by the observation of sunspots done without adequate protection for decades. Three hundred and fifty years later, through Pope John Paul II, on October 31, 1992, the Catholic Church formally recognized the legitimacy of Galilei's theories.
