She's been called 'Rocky in stilettos', but Erin Brockovich is more than just a pretty face. Her work led to the largest toxic injury settlement in U-S history and her story inspired an Oscar-winning performance by Julia Roberts. After a nasty car accident while living in Reno, Nevada, Erin packed moved to California, hired a lawyer and settled her case out of court. When the settlement money ran out, Erin asked her lawyer for a job. That's when she came across medical papers linked to the town of Hinkley, California. The papers outlined a series of health problems in the community. People with headaches, nosebleeds, spinal deterioration - even cancer. Something was seriously wrong and Erin started to dig deeper. Soon, she got more than 600 people in Hinkley to join a lawsuit against Pacific Gas and Electric. The company was accused of illegally dumping toxic waste - effectively poisoning people in the area. The case was settled in 1996 and the residents of Hinkley were awarded 333 million dollars. After that, the law firm promoted Erin to director of environmental research. More recently, she's been a T-V host, she's written a book, started her own consulting firm and won numerous awards for her commitment to consumer advocacy and the environment.
