Two Colonial Williamsburg costumed interpreters chat during a lull in tourist traffic in late afternoon. The courthouse, one of 88 original structures left when restoration of Colonial Williamsburg began about 80 years ago, was already decorated for Christmas when we visited on November 29 this year. Grand Illumination, the official kickoff of the Christmas season at Colonial Williamsburg, was the next weekend.

An interpreter in period costume walks along Palace Green past the Thomas Everard house and office in Colonial Williamsburg, Virginia. The Everard house, smokehouse, and kitchen all are among the 88 original buildings of Colonial Williamsburg still in place when restoration of the colonial capital of Virginia commenced about 80 years ago; the small building to the right of the Everard house is Everard's office, which is a reconstruction of the original.

Thomas Everard was an orphan when he arrived in Virginia in the 1730s; as an adult, he served about 40 years as clerk of the York County Court and held the office of Mayor of Williamsburg twice. He lived on the property shown here for about 25 years, after acquiring it in 1755. The house originally was built in 1718 by John Brush, the first keeper of the Magazine (where munitions were kept). When I first visited Williamsburg in 1974, the house was known as the Brush-Everard house; later, Colonial Williamsburg Foundation started calling it just the Thomas Everard house because Everard had enlarged and otherwise upgraded the house during his ownership. (Official Guide to Colonial Williamsburg, 3rd edition, pp. 80-81).

This is part of my Williamsburg, except Christmas set, which includes photos of other buildings and other Colonial Williamsburg attractions, and also a Williamsburg Original 88 set that features some of the original structures; a separate set features Williamsburg Christmas decorations.

Member States must act to ensure that pension schemes can sustainably deliver an adequate income to the EU's growing number of retired people, despite the economic crisis, says a Parliament resolution adopted on Wednesday. Pension portability must also be addressed, as must inequalities faced by women and older workers, stress MEPs.

"At present there are four people of working age for every person over 65, by 2060 there will be just two" says a European Commission Green Paper, to which the European Parliament resolution is a response.

8BASIC (C) is a BASIC interpreter developed by manufacturer G.G in 2010 for the homemade Z80/AM95 8 bit NANO COMPUTER.

8BASIC doesn't have line numbers but uses line labels which may be referenced by control flow statements.

VARIABLES

Statements use variables to keep track of numbers or strings or labels.

Variables and labels must consist of only one alphabetical character.

So the maximum number of GOTO/GOSUB's arguments is 26 and the labelled addresses are precompiled into RAM in a separate table during the program editing.

The range of the 26 numeric values which can be entered or stored, lies between -9.99999 and +9.99999 x 10^5 (always displayed in 8-char fixed format: six digits plus sign and decimal dot). Variables are anyway stored in RAM in floating-point representation during program editing when declared (precomplilation) or during interpretation for the intermediate results. The precision of intermediate calculations depends on the APU 9511 capability (1 bit sign, 7 bit two's complement exponent and 24 bit of mantissa).

During editing, just after having selected the correct statement, you can easily change any of the 26 letters of each variable, navigating through the alphabet using the telephone-like keypad.

For example the generic statement "Z=X+Y" which performs the addition, can be easily modified in

"A=X+Y" or

"A=A+A" or

"Z=X+Z" or

"A=A+X" etc..

It is also easy to handle any algebraic expression using multiple 8-chars functions managing intermediate results.

For example Z=2*A+15*C can be written as:

" LET X="

"+15.0000" ;X=15

"X=X*C " ;X=15*C

"B=A+A " ;B=2*A

"Z=B+X " ;Z=2*A+15*C

Each of the 26 text variables may contain max eight alphanumeric characters and symbols, as per the complete DL2416 character set.

But you may build texts with more chars by concatenating strings stored in consecutive letters (variables), with the last string ending with the "#" char: text will be displayed by scrolling right-to-left. So technically the max size of a displayed string is 207 characters.

Here the typical "Hello Word" program which displays the string "Hello World" in an infinite loop:

" LET A$="

"HELLO WO" ; A$="HELLO WO"

" LET B$="

"RLD# " ; B$="RLD"

" "F": " ; F label

"PRINT+A$" ; display from right to left A$&B$ = "HELLO WORLD"

"GO TO F " ; goto F and loop

" END "

Bianca Jagger speaks at 'Save Justice' Legal Aid cuts protest - London 04.06.2013

Around 500 barristers, solicitors, court interpreters and legal charity workers protested at the Ministry of Justice against proposed "austerity"cuts to the Legal Aid budget which will, say the campaigners, put justice out of reach for the poor and vulnerable. Putting justice out of reach for the poor and the vulnerable will also make it impossible for ordinary citizens to take the government to court and hold it accountable.

Many solicitors, barristers and campaigners spoke during the protest, including veteran human rights campaigner Bianca Jagger, Andy Slaughter (MP), Geoffrey Robertson QC, Mike Fordham QC, Dr. Adeline Trudy (Immigrants in Detention), Habib Rahman (chief executive of the Joint Council for the Welfare of Immigrants), Pat Craig (Legal director Reprive), Tracy Lazzard (Inclusion London), David Lammy (MP), Elena Pinter (Children's Society),James Welch (Legal director for Liberty) and David Creighton (Association of Prison Lawyers)

The Village of Godly Counsel where the Interpreter lives.

This is a preview of an upcoming movie. The Late Great Pilgrim's Progress, Christiana's Journey.

This is a family project that is being worked on at a slow but steady rate. The finished movie should be posted at www.nancys-world.com/pilgrims-progress-movie .

The Pilgrim's Progress is a Christian allegory written by John Bunyan in 1678. This story was based on a series of dreams Bunyan had when he was jailed for preaching the gospel. This book has been translated into more than 200 languages, and has never been out of print. Christian, the central character in the story, journeys from the City of Destruction to the Celestial City. Along the way he faces many dangers and obstacles. This story closely resembles many of the life experiences Christians have pre and post conversion on the road of life, the pitfalls and dangers faced in the lives of many Christian believers who are on the same journey.

This movie is loosely based on Part II of The Pilgrim’s Progress where Christian’s wife ( Christiana ) follow in the footsteps of her husband, the plot of this movie incorporates some of the events from part 1 and presents present modern day scenarios into this classic story.
