Plumes stowed for flight - the only bit you can see is the curly tail of wet plumes at the back that have been trailing in the mud and water as it feeds.
Leunig would like that tail. And that red blob is a Dusky Moorhen or Purple Swamphen watching in the background.

Through the last month I've seen a few of these lovely birds forage in the lawns of TIFR (Mumbai., India). Today I decided to spend some time photographing them. The first thing I realized was that they keep a wary eye on humans although they have spent days in their vicinity.
Stalking after them in the open is no use. One way to get close is to wait until they forage near a tree and then use the tree to cover your approach. Once you judge that you are close enough you can look around the bole of the tree and take a quick snap or two. That's how this was taken.

American Conifer Society: Picea abies 'Argenteospica' is a relatively slow-growing, tree-form of Norway spruce that is virtually identical to the typical species with the exception of the spring push of fresh foliage which is bright creamy white in color that darkens to rich green later in the season. It's slightly slower growth rate is likely attributable to the few months of decreased chlorophyll each spring. After 10 years of growth, a mature specimen will measure 6 feet (1.8 m) tall and 4 feet (1.2 m) wide, annual growth rate of 6 to 8 inches (15 - 20 cm).
This cultivar originated as a seedling selected in the late 1800s by Herm. A. Hesse Nursery, Weener am Ems, Germany. Ludwig Beissner formally described it in botanical literature in 1891 in Handbuch der Nadelholzkunde. In the Latin language, "argenteopica" translates into "silver spikes."

Class 15 Intermediate Division Showmanship winners at the Junior Beef Expo (JBE) were, from left, Caden Childers of Morgan County, first place; Alli Ann Johndrow of Lee County, second; Katherine Evans of Mobile County, third; and Abby Burgess of Blount County, fourth. The contest was March 14 at the Teague Arena in Montgomery. JBE is presented by the Alabama Farmers Federation and held in conjunction with the SLE Rodeo at Garrett Coliseum.
