The clouds begin breaking up on this fall morning in the windy city as an inbound for LaSalle Street Station, Metra Train No. 306, pounds the diamond with CN as it completes a trip up Metra's Rock Island District. METX MP36PH-3S No. 417 brings up the rear.

Here, they're passing the venerable 16th Street Interlocking Tower, built in 1901. For 122 years, it's stood tall along the former Rock Island mainline at MP 1.1, having seen moves from the Rock Island, New York Central and Illinois Central from the days of old to moves from Metra, Amtrak and CN in the modern day. The tower itself was originally manned by the NYC, passed to the Rock Island following the PRR-NYC merger, which became the Penn Central. Metra has since assumed control of the tower.

The debilitated wooden tower provides a stark contrast against the skyscrapers and high rises that make up the Chicago skyline in the background, which make it seem rather out of place. Even so, as this industry quickly changes and modernizes, interlocking towers such as this can't be long for this world, yet for now, this one still serves as a reminder of a bygone era of railroading. 11/10/24.

Abstract from Zabriskie Point

In the Dearborn Subway, a Forest Park-bound CTA Blue Line train swings through the curve underneath Congress Parkway, about to pass through La Salle Interlocking and make its stop at the La Salle station. The subway station here is below and adjacent to La Salle Street Station, terminal for Metra's Rock Island District.

Most of the Western Maryland relics along the Lurgan Subdivision are gone, making this old shack worth grabbing in a frame whenever I can. CSX train D773 is passing the old telephone hut that stands at the Conboy Interlocking near milepost 14. This used to be a signaled, automatic switch in decades past but with the decline in Lurgan Sub traffic it was no longer needed and it is now a hand-thrown switch to a little used siding.

I have previously posted pics with various numbers of interlocking forks, often with an egg balanced on top (because I can).

I have prayed with the intensities just to add interest.

I rebuilt YO tower to include a train order semaphore in addition to its mechanical interlocking machine. It is equipped to operate both mechanical semaphores and electric signals at a 1x2 track diamond crossing. Previous incarnations were too complex to travel easily. This re-design aims to build a simple and transportable moc that will showcase the lego interlocking machine and mechanical semaphore signals

Passing under power lines that almost mimic the track layout of Delray, CP T-40 heads back to Windsor, Ontario after interchanging with NS at Oakwood Yard. Delray is one of the last manned interlocking towers left in service in the US. One can see several railroads converging at this location. CP, CN, NS, Conrail Shared Assets, CSX, and The Delray Connecting Railroad all pass through the junction along with several yards in close proximity (CSX Rougemere, NS Oakwood, and CR Livernois Yards).

Train: CP T-40 with CP 5020 (SD30C-ECO), CP 6261 (SD60M), and CP 5030 (SD30C-ECO).

I have an interest in Geology & imagine the Tectonic Plates which are always moving & exerting huge pressure on each other to be locked in battle like this...compressing & expanding until the Earths surface is ruptured creating Volcanic activity & Earth Quakes.....the weak points are known as faults where much of this activity takes place

thanks for looking in....appreciated.....best bigger....hope you have a Great Weekend

CTA Purple Line Express run 520 threads its way from Tracks 2 to 4 at Thorndale Interlocking, a new set of universal scissors crossovers installed just south of Thorndale station on the North Side Main Line. This marks the north end of the RPM (Red-Purple Modernization) project to completely rebuild the 4-track main line- embankment, stations, and all- between here and just south of Lawrence. In the project section, tracks 1 and 2 are currently in use for all trains while tracks 3 and 4 get rebuilt on new viaduct sections. To accommodate the work, certain stations (Berwyn and Lawrence) have been closed completely, while others (Argyle and Bryn Mawr) have been partially closed, with their former island platforms serving only northbound Red Line trains; new, temporary platforms have been built to serve southbounds, which currently use what was southbound express track 1. Amazingly, Purple Line Express service has been preserved throughout all this work, a feat no doubt made easier by the fact that train frequencies have been somewhat reduced due to the pandemic and ongoing crew/staff shortages.

NEW BRIGHTON LIGHTHOUSE, SITS NEXT TO THE FORT, IT WAS ORIGINALLY, A WOODEN "PERCH", HENCE ITS NAME. A LARGE POST HELD A LIGHT ON TOP AND WAS SUPPORTED BY A SORT OF TRIPOD. IT WAS ERECTED ON THE BLACK ROCK IN 1683 BY THE LIVERPOOL CORPORATION.

WHEN FOREIGN SHIPS, PASSED THE OLD PERCH, THEY WERE CHARGED SIXPENCE FOR ITS RESPECT AND TO KEEP IT IN REPAIR. BUT IT WAS OFTEN WASHED AWAY AND A BOAT HAD TO BE LAUNCHED TO RECOVER IT FROM BOOTLE BAY. IN FEBRUARY 1821, THE PILOT BOAT "LIVER" CRASHED INTO THE PERCH AND CARRIED IT AWAY. IT HAS BEEN SAID THAT IT WAS WASHED AWAY IN MARCH 1824 AND NOT RECOVERED UNTIL THE DECEMBER.

HOWEVER THE COST OF REPLACING IT ALL THE TIME GREW TOO EXPENSIVE AND IT WAS DECIDED TO BUILD A NEW ONE.

CONSTRUCTION OF THE LIGHTHOUSE

THE FOUNDATION STONE OF THE NEW LIGHTHOUSE WAS LAID ON 8TH JUNE 1827 BY THOMAS LITTLEDALE, MAYOR OF LIVERPOOL. IT WAS DESIGNED ON THE LINES OF EDDYSTONE BY MR. FOSTER AND BUILT OF MARBLE ROCK FROM ANGLESEY BY TOMKINSON & COMPANY. IT RISES 90 FEET ABOVE THE ROCKS AND IS CONSIDERED TO BE A MASTERPIECE OF CRAFTSMANSHIP. THE GRANITE COST 1/6D A CUBIC FOOT.

EACH PIECE OF STONE IS INTERLOCKED INTO THE NEXT. THE WHOLE STONEWORK, WHEN FINISHED , WAS COATED WITH WHAT IS KNOWN AS "PUZZELLANI" A VOLCANIC SUBSTANCE FROM MOUNT ETNA WHICH, WITH AGE, BECOMES ROCK HARD. THE FIRST 45 FEET IS SOLID. A SPIRAL STAIRCASE LEADS TO WHERE THE KEEPER LIVED AND THEN ON TO THE LANTERN HOUSE. THE REVOLVING LIGHT WAS SAID TO BE THE FIRST IN THE COUNTRY. IT COST £27,500 TO CONSTRUCT.

THE LIGHTHOUSE IN USE

WORK WAS ONLY POSSIBLE AT LOW TIDE AND IT WAS NOT COMPLETED UNTIL 1830. ITS FIRST LIGHT SHONE ON THE 1ST MARCH OF THAT YEA AND CONSISTED OF TWO WHITE FLASHES, FOLLOWED BY ONE RED, WITH A RANGE OF 14 MILES. THE LIGHT WAS 77 FEET ABOVE THE HALF-TIDE LEVEL. IT WAS EVENTUALLY ELECTRICALLY CONNECTED TO THE MAINLAND.

THE LIGHTHOUSE LAST SHONE ITS LIGHT ON 1ST OCTOBER 1973 AS IT WAS NO LONGER NEEDED ON ACCOUNT OF THE RADAR SYSTEM OPERATING IN THE RIVER.

THE LIGHTHOUSE NOW

A LOCAL ARCHITECT PURCHASED THE LIGHTHOUSE FOR £100 ON CONDITION HE MAINTAINED THE CONSTRUCTION, HE TRIED TO RESTORE THE LANTERN AGAIN BUT THE RIVER AUTHORITIES THOUGHT IT MIGHT CAUSE CONFUSION TO LOCAL SHIPPING. SO HE REFURBISHED IT SO THAT ANYONE COULD STAY THERE FOR A SHORT HOLIDAY. INDEED, IT WAS THEIR IDEA TO ATTRACT NEWLY MARRIED COUPLES TO SPEND PART OF THEIR HONEYMOON THERE AT A COST OF £50 A DAY, WITH CHAMPAGNE AND FLOWERS THROWN IN.

WITH ELECTRICITY BEING INTRODUCED, THE OLD LIGHTHOUSE HAS A GALLEY WITH COOKER AND REFRIDGERATOR AND, ON THE FIRST FLOOR, A BATHROOM WITH SHOWER. THERE IS A LIVING ROOM AND A BEDROOM ON THE NEXT TWO FLOORS. THE LIGHTHOUSE EVEN HAS A TELEVISION, JUST IN CASE ONE GETS BORED WITH LOOKING AT THE SEA. A LADDER HAS TO BE OBTAINED FROM THE FORT TO GAIN THE NECESSARY HEIGHT TO REACH THE 15 IRON RUNGS OF THE LIGHTHOUSE AS THE DOOR IS 25 FEET FROM THE BASE.

There is room inside the box for the battery, resistors and all other wire connections that the distant signal needs. The pole line transmits the the operating impulses from the switch inside the tower.

I shot this for the Macro Mondays group theme of Gear: 21/05/2012.

I don't normally need an excuse, but the theme this week gave me the perfect opportunity to play with my collection of antique pocket watches!

However, this is not a pocket watch, it's the insides of a Smith and Son stopwatch that looks like it needs a good clean!

Oh well, I guess I know what I'll be doing later on today! :)

HMM!

At one time this was a diamond, but today only the line to Ridgeway and beyond, and Brookville, passes by this spot.

ACS-64 AMTK 614 looks devilish with the red marker lights lit as it comes through CP State. The Keystone train is shoving back into the Harrisburg Transportation Center after running out to the end of electrification to allow for a platform change. Laying on the ground at the edge of the right-of-way lays the new tracks to be installed at the interlocking. Amtrak is in the middle of a major infrastructure project in and around the station.

Cara Lory a me succede anche da sobrio...

My previous machines used tensed thread to interlock the levers. My newer method uses 100% unmodified Lego, and is built with common parts. It is a very basic replication of tappet interlocking. As one lever is pulled into its reverse position is displaces the 1x1 round a half a plate into the gap on the adjacent tappet. This prevents the adjacent tappet from being reversed until the lever in reverse has been returned to normal. This basic principle is used to construct tappets so that arranging conflicting routes is impossible.

The machine controls five signals, that are part of an interlocking where three tracks converge to two. Each lever represents a route, either straight or diverging. Pulling the lever will clear a signal but, the actual aspect (y/y or y/r or g/r) is determined by the track circuits, not the lever.

It can be used with mechanical signals as well.

My write up on photographing the new Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas here

On the weekend of November 20-21, 2010, I was invited to photograph the new Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas prior to their opening December 15, 2010 in Las Vegas NV.

This set of images represents my efforts that weekend to showcase this newest resort property opening up on the Las Vegas Strip. Thanks to David Scherer from The Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas for showing me around, to Miiko Mentz at Katalyst Films for helping to arrange the shoot, and to my wife for modeling for me.
