HID LIGHTS:- Fitting HID lights to you motorbike or car greatly increases your visibility during the day as much as it allows you to see better at night. HID lights for motorcycles draw less power than your original bulbs so for example a 55 Watt HID light replacing the standard 55 Watt filament bulb with only draw 35 Watts from your alternator making you alternator work less. On top of this Motorbike HID lights are 300% brighter than normal lights. Here at www.motorbikeadventures.co.uk we use 6000 Kelvin bulbs with an array of fitments including but not limited to:- H1, H3, H7, and H11.
Motorcycle HID lights come in two parts the bulb and the ballast with starter. The bulbs are easy to fit and we have yet to find a bike that we have not been able to fit the kits too! The normal lighting systems of motorbikes is shockingly poor and HID lights add a considerable visual presence to your bike! We have found that HID’s it greatly reduce car drivers pulling out on you on those all too often lane changes where they appear not to have even noticed your there! Bulbs last longer as there is no filament to break and changing both Dip beam and Main is recommended as the HID’s are so good it tends to render your normal Main beam useless! Installation time for a main and dip beam is 1 and half hours approx!
INTERCOMS:- Autocom Intercoms for motorbikes are a great way of communicating and listening to information you need on the move without taking your hands from the handlebars! Our intercom systems allow you to automatically answer your phone, listen to directions from your Garmin Zumo GPS and play your favourite album from your music collection with the need to take your hands from the handlebars. If you carry a pillion the system allows for you to have two way communications with your pillion and for your pillion to have automatic selection and use of their own mobile phone and music!
Best fitted by a professional this system can give you many years of great riding and once you have used one we don’t believe your ever look back. We find most people have problems when inexperienced people try to fit systems like this without the knowledge and experience to know how to set the system up and what elements to use together. Wired intercom system can currently perform multiple task simultaneously which cannot be said for Bluetooth units. In addition to multi tasking the autocom units do not need recharging as they work direct from the motorbikes electrical system and are free from the need to carry fragile charging units. A correctly setup Autocom system will allow the rider to use the system as well off road as on road. The Autocom systems we supply and fit have been used on expeditions round the globe. Often power is not available in remote places and often when power is available people for get to charge their headsets or have other items needing charging so forget the intercom system.

HID LIGHTS:- Fitting HID lights to you motorbike or car greatly increases your visibility during the day as much as it allows you to see better at night. HID lights for motorcycles draw less power than your original bulbs so for example a 55 Watt HID light replacing the standard 55 Watt filament bulb with only draw 35 Watts from your alternator making you alternator work less. On top of this Motorbike HID lights are 300% brighter than normal lights. Here at www.motorbikeadventures.co.uk we use 6000 Kelvin bulbs with an array of fitments including but not limited to:- H1, H3, H7, and H11.
Motorcycle HID lights come in two parts the bulb and the ballast with starter. The bulbs are easy to fit and we have yet to find a bike that we have not been able to fit the kits too! The normal lighting systems of motorbikes is shockingly poor and HID lights add a considerable visual presence to your bike! We have found that HID’s it greatly reduce car drivers pulling out on you on those all too often lane changes where they appear not to have even noticed your there! Bulbs last longer as there is no filament to break and changing both Dip beam and Main is recommended as the HID’s are so good it tends to render your normal Main beam useless! Installation time for a main and dip beam is 1 and half hours approx!
INTERCOMS:- Autocom Intercoms for motorbikes are a great way of communicating and listening to information you need on the move without taking your hands from the handlebars! Our intercom systems allow you to automatically answer your phone, listen to directions from your Garmin Zumo GPS and play your favourite album from your music collection with the need to take your hands from the handlebars. If you carry a pillion the system allows for you to have two way communications with your pillion and for your pillion to have automatic selection and use of their own mobile phone and music!
Best fitted by a professional this system can give you many years of great riding and once you have used one we don’t believe your ever look back. We find most people have problems when inexperienced people try to fit systems like this without the knowledge and experience to know how to set the system up and what elements to use together. Wired intercom system can currently perform multiple task simultaneously which cannot be said for Bluetooth units. In addition to multi tasking the autocom units do not need recharging as they work direct from the motorbikes electrical system and are free from the need to carry fragile charging units. A correctly setup Autocom system will allow the rider to use the system as well off road as on road. The Autocom systems we supply and fit have been used on expeditions round the globe. Often power is not available in remote places and often when power is available people for get to charge their headsets or have other items needing charging so forget the intercom system.

Apparently this looks "good", to me it still looks awful. The cut goes from the inner leg by the middle of my calf and winds down towards my ankle.
Story of what happened (cut & pasted here for Angela):
So the entire weekend away with hubby was WONDERFUL and absolutely divine. However on the ferryboat ride home there was a slight mishap.
The boat had just left the dock and we were up getting coffee/snack, I'm taking a couple pictures of the fog that is still hanging around at 9:30am. Mike and I head down the stairs on the outside of the boat, he is in front of me as I keep stopping to take pictures. About the 3rd stair from the bottom my sandal gets stuck somehow on the stairs and I know I'm about to fall so I try to tumble into it instead of falling flat on my face.
I try to get up and can hear people saying, "oh no she fell down", I manage to stand and I'm thinking to myself that 1. I'm totally embarrassed and 2. My leg really hurts for such a small fall.
Then I hear... "OH NOOOOOOO" and parents are grabbing their kids and running away. I look down and can see about 3 inches of my bone with a huge piece of skin hanging off my leg. I then proceed to shut my eyes for the next half n hour. Apparently there's metal on the outside stairs that sliced me right up.
Mike and some lady help me over to the bench where I lay down and wait while they try to find some help. They make an announcement over the intercom asking for any passengers that might be doctors or nurses. Guess what? 2 ER doctors come running, an army nurse and an EMT... not to mention about 5 or more other people who were in the medical field in one way or another.
They assess the injury and because the bleeding is miraculously minimal I don't have to be air lifted to the nearest hospital. Instead they wrap my leg up, carry me on a back-brace board to an employee room that has a cot. I stay there for the rest of the hour long boat ride.
When we get to the main land I take my very first ambulance ride to the hospital and then proceed to wait for x-rays, doctors and such.
My x-ray technician said that it looked like a "horror movie", my 2 emt guys from the ambulance ride had to come back after the bandage was off so they could see what all the fuss was about. One doctor told me she was impressed and hasn't seen a cut that bad in a long time. Another doctor asked if it was a propeller accident. Another medical person wished that they had their camera handy.
By the way I DO have pictures of the cut before and after stitches if anyone wants to see them.
I ended up going into surgery and getting stitches for a cut that totals 8 inches long. My leg in that area (the shin) is about 15 inches around... the cut was over half. They had to stitch up the inside first, then the skin.
I'm on bed rest for 2 weeks. Switching back n forth from a wheelchair to crutches.
In the midst of all this though... let me tell you that I'm praising the Lord for His tender mercy... He truly blessed us in so many ways: NO broken bones, very little bleeding, no damage to muscles or nerves, this happened on our way HOME and not on our way to our vacation, the vacationing medical personnel was amazing and we have great family/friends taking great care of us.
I still can't believe it all though... I mean how many people tumble down 3 stairs and stand up with their leg almost amputated?? (K, wasn't THAT bad, but you get the point.)

HID LIGHTS:- Fitting HID lights to you motorbike or car greatly increases your visibility during the day as much as it allows you to see better at night. HID lights for motorcycles draw less power than your original bulbs so for example a 55 Watt HID light replacing the standard 55 Watt filament bulb with only draw 35 Watts from your alternator making you alternator work less. On top of this Motorbike HID lights are 300% brighter than normal lights. Motorcycle HID lights come in two parts the bulb and the ballast with starter. The bulbs are easy to fit and we have yet to find a bike that we have not been able to fit the kits too! The normal lighting systems of motorbikes is shockingly poor and HID lights add a considerable visual presence to your bike! We have found that HID’s it greatly reduce car drivers pulling out on you on those all too often lane changes where they appear not to have even noticed your there! Bulbs last longer as there is no filament to break and changing both Dip beam and Main is recommended as the HID’s are so good it tends to render your normal Main beam useless! The Atlantic 85 is part of the B-class of lifeboats that serve the shores of the United Kingdom and Ireland as a part of the RNLI inshore fleet.
The Atlantic 85 is the third generation B-class Rigid Inflatable Boat (RIB) developed from the Atlantic 21 and the later Atlantic 75. The Atlantic design of the B-class of lifeboats is named after Atlantic College, where the design was originally developed.
Design
The hull is constructed in a fibre reinforced composite, consisting of a carbon fibre and foam core laminate with an epoxy glass and foam sandwich layup. The tubes are Hypalon.
The boat is powered by twin 115 hp (86 kW) Yamaha 4-stroke outboard engines that have been inversion-proofed to ensure the engines are still operational after a capsize.
Like previous RIBs, it has a manually operated self-righting mechanism that deploys an airbag mounted atop the A-frame. It is capable of being beached in an emergency without sustaining damage to engines or steering gear. The Atlantic 85 is fitted with radar and VHF direction finding equipment and can be operated safely in daylight in a force 6/7 and at night in a force 5/6.
The Atlantic 85 also has intercom communications between the crew and VHF radio via their helmets, DGPS & Chartplotter. It also carries a searchlight, night-vision equipment and illuminating paraflares for night-time operations.
To ensure equipment is kept to a high standard of repair, boats go through annual or bi-annual overhauls, and 4-year refits.

The Liechtenstein City Palace is a palace in the first District of Vienna, Innere Stadt, near the imperial Hofburg. It is the Majorat House of the Princes of Liechtenstein and is still owned by the Princely House of Liechtenstein. The building is considered the first major high-baroque building in Vienna.
The palace was very extensively restored and 9 April 2013 will be opened by Prince Hans Adam II in the presence of President Heinz Fischer and, with works of art from the Princely Collections, it will be provided from 3 May 2013 on every second Friday to visits during tours als well as for the utilsation by (accomodated) events.
Location
The main entrance to the palace is located diagonally opposite the south wing of the new building opened in 1888 at the Burgtheater in Bankgasse 9, 10 Löwelstraße corner (there is no entrance). The Bank Street was called until 1862 anterior Schenkenstraße; present name recalls that lay at the other end of the alley from 1821 to 1860 the headquarters of the Austrian National Bank. Additional fronts of the building block are located on the Abraham-a-Sancta-Clara -Gasse 1 (side street of Bank Street) and at the subsequent address Minoritenplatz 4 (ministries adjacent). With the south side borders the palace buildings in the neighborhood of the Federal Chancellery .
From the windows of the east front of the palace in the 1786 first mentioned Löwelstraße looked one from about 1861-1863 above this section of the then demolished city walls around the old town. Located behind the glacis, above which one looked at the 1850 incorporated suburb of Josefstadt, was during the construction of the Ringstrasse in part obstructed. In front of the palace was not built because the city wall was moved here 1821 outwards and opposite the front of the Löwelstraße of the palace the 1823 created popular garden was made publicly available. Today are from this front next to the adjacent Burgtheater above the popular garden across the City Hall, the Parliament, the Natural History Museum and adjacent to the People's Garden the Heroes Square in front of the Imperial Palace to see.
History and design
The construction of the palace began in 1691 on behalf of Dominik Graf Kaunitz, led by Domenico Martinelli and using plans by Enrico Zuccalli. Stonemason commissions received the Vienna master Michael Khöll and from the imperial court quarry stonemason master Ferrethi Ambrose and his sons Giovanni Battista Passerini and Martin Trumler.
Prince Johann Adam I of Liechtenstein bought the unfinished palace, 1694, determined it as Majorat House and he had the building by Gabriel de Gabrieli and Martinelli until 1705 finished. On the side street to the bank the first monumental Baroque portal of Vienna was built by Martinelli. The portal side at Minoritenplatz and the staircase are associated with Johann Lucas von Hildebrandt. The sculptural features on the portal, on the attic and in the interiors come from Giovanni Giuliani, the stucco by Santino Bussi. The main staircase of Emperor stone (Kaiserstein) was erected in 1699 by the Viennese masters Michael Khöll and Wolfgang Steinböck, the echelons of the staircase coming from Kaisersteinbruch.
To 1806 was in the second flor the Liechtenstein gallery. Then the palace was leased to the Archdukes Johann and Ludwig, and the works of art were brought to the palace garden in Rossau. Later, the Russian embassy was quartered in the city palace.
Prince Alois II wanted to use the palace himself again and had the house in the years 1836-1847 expanded by Peter Hubert Desvignes inside, with the implementation was Carl Leistler commissioned who as one of several subcontractors Michael Thonet enlisted. The cost of the new equipment should have amounted to eleven million guilders.
In the palace have been installed technical devised on order of the Prince that caused a stir. Among other things, there were doors that were mirrored on one side and could been pulled up and turned, a lift and a house intercom. The greatest abundance of decoration and technical refinement has been undertaken in the ballroom: It is surrounded by three corridors and can be increased to these rooms by raising the side doors, they are also partly mirrored and turnable. The palace was also popularly known as artists care home (Künstlerversorgungsheim) because the conversion work made by Desvignes took nearly ten years to be done.
The Palais equipment by Desvignes exceeded all expectations of the Viennese Biedermeier and is therefore attributable to the second Rococo: elegant bentwood floors by Michael Thonet, flowery silk wall coverings and curtains of Viennese companies, complemented by extremely heavy Parisian chandelier shape after restoration today the interiors again.
Princess Nora Fugger (1864-1945) described the palace in her biography:
The palace has in terms of beauty and magnificence, hardly its equal in Europe. The ballroom is of immense height. When the lights in the candelabras on the walls, in the large girandoles and in the huge glass balloons , the lusters over the middle of the room, had been inflamed the beautiful room appeared as bathed in light. At the ballroom are bordering two side chambers that are separated by glass walls from the high hall. On the other walls high mirrors are attached, which construction is making a truly magical impression. In one of the salons is in the middle of the room a pool with a fountain. Immediately before the outbreak of the Revolution, Prince of Liechtenstein gave the first ball in his splendid palace. In 1851 - after the revolutionary years - again the first, previously described.
The palace was also known for the important collection of paintings of princes, the most important baroque works are since 2004 in the Liechtenstein Garden Palace (until 2011 Liechtenstein Museum ) in Rossau in the 9th District presented.
The royal family moved their residence from 1938 from their castles in Moravia, Lower Austria and Vienna to the Principality of Liechtenstein to avoid contacts with the Nazi regime as possible. The regime could not argue against the fact that the royal art collection was moved in the war for security in the principality, had the principality since 1806 been recognized as a sovereign state. The property of the prince could therefore, as the German Reich was not waging a war with Liechtenstein, not being confiscated by the Nazi regime.
The city palace was by a bomb and and aircraft falling on the building in World War II badly damaged, such as, Prince Hans Adam II of Liechtenstein at a press conference in January 2013, his first visit to the palace in 1953, recalled. In the 1950s on, it was quickly repaired, the ceiling in the staircase in the 1970s according to old recordings reconstructed.
Construction 2009-2013
Since 2009, the planning was carried out by the Viennese architectural office Manfred Wehdorn the general refurbishment of the palace, where, under the courtyard a three storey, 18-meter- deep underground storage for art was built. In the show rooms especially the Biedermeier Art from the Princely Collections at 1,200 square feet of space will be presented. The opening of the museum was originally for 1 December 2011 and on 19 October 2011 for the spring of 2012 announced.
On 15 November 2011, the opening was postponed to the spring of 2013 and on 16 November communicated that (as in the Liechtenstein Garden Palace), the term Liechtenstein Museum no longer is used and no regular museum operation will be provided. The house will be to view on the "Long Night of the Museums" and at group tours and (rented) events.
The in 2013 finished restoration was the first in many decades, in which the historic building structure and the historic technical installations without pressure to save or time pressure sustainably have been repaired; according to the client from January 2013 to around 100 million euros. As of May 2013, the palace and the Biedermeier collection on guided tours can be visited.

This wall of high-tech Nutone stereo/intercom equipment was state-of-the-art in 1961, and my mom's cousin (who grew up in the house) remembers flipping on each switch on the top control panel to turn on the stereo in every room of the house.
She and her sister would listen to music and dance around the house while doing their chores, and I guess that their very patient parents never minded as long as the jobs were getting done.
The third cabinet can be pulled down to expose a record player, and the fourth cabinet was used to store records. It now houses a fancy 8-track player.

HID lights for motorcycles draw less power than your original bulbs so for example a 55 Watt HID light replacing the standard 55 Watt filament bulb with only draw 35 Watts from your alternator making you alternator work less. On top of this Motorbike HID lights are 300% brighter than normal lights. The normal lighting systems of motorbikes is shockingly poor and HID lights add a considerable visual presence to your bike! We have found that HID’s it greatly reduce car drivers pulling out on you on those all too often lane changes where they appear not to have even noticed your there! If you carry a pillion the system allows for you to have two way communications with your pillion and for your pillion to have automatic selection and use of their own mobile phone and music!
Best fitted by a professional this system can give you many years of great riding and once you have used one we don’t believe your ever look back. We find most people have problems when inexperienced people try to fit systems like this without the knowledge and experience to know how to set the system up and what elements to use together. Wired intercom system can currently perform multiple task simultaneously which cannot be said for Bluetooth units. In addition to multi tasking the autocom units do not need recharging as they work direct from the motorbikes electrical system and are free from the need to carry fragile charging units. A correctly setup Autocom system will allow the rider to use the system as well off road as on road. The Autocom systems we supply and fit have been used on expeditions round the globe. Often power is not available in remote places and often when power is available people for get to charge their headsets or have other items needing charging so forget the intercom system.

Although it is decades since Radio Nottingham's former York Street studios were vacated, at the street door of the now very shabby and abandoned former premises there remains an old intercom still bearing the name Radio Nottingham .
Its a relic reminder of years when a very popular radio station served the city from that place, when many a celebrity would press its yellow buzzer button .
Some passers by on that street might well pause to wonder or recall how Radio Nottingham came to be established.
It was back in the swinging sixties - that, very much as a sop to the many radio listeners much frustrated and displeased by the then H.M. Government's suppression of the very popular off-shore pirate music radio stations, the BBC was fiscally encouraged to begin local radio service broadcasting.
In 1966 a station for Nottingham, aptly named Radio Nottingham, was established. It was the very first local radio station of the B.B.C's post-war broadcasting era.
However, long before then, on September 16th, 1924, almost two years after the first British Broadcasting Company's had first transmitted, a broadcast relay station had been established in Nottingham and given the call sign name 5NG. Its beginning was duly reported by the press. One of its first broadcasted reports was made by made by W. J. Board, the Town Clerk of Nottingham.
It had been at Easter in 1964, that commercially financed broadcasts intended for U.K. reception had been begun from Radio Caroline a medium wave radio ship in the the North Sea off the port of Felixtowe in Essex, at anchorage a sufficiently secure distance outside the UK's legal jurisdiction.
By 1967 there were more than ten offshore radio stations broadcasting popular music in much the same format and style that
Radio Caroline had introduced . To many young and other lively minded young at hearts of that time the music radio pirates ruled the airwaves : the sudden huge novelty of seemingly uninhibited pop radio broadcasting at a time of general prosperity had proved irresistible.
Unfortunately for those medium wave listeners, the offshore broadcasters immediately stirred much Europe wide debate concerning international broadcast law and informal agreements, with consequent party political maneuvering by the U.K's and other governments . Very soon a detailed Marine Broadcasting Act
( of Parliament ) was enacted sufficient to end all UK shore servicing or provisioning of illegal radio stations to thereby force their closures.
The Act was immediately perceived by the great many that had enjoyed the programmes of the off-shore broadcasters to be a vindictive personal slight against themselves, and not a matter of due international law and agreements. For most it seemed a malicious act of deprivation and a restriction of youthful freedom.
A contemporary protest pop song urged , "Hands off the pirate stations ; fight for the pirate stations . . " Notwithstanding some determined pirate radio airplay the songs cheery chorus proved a doomed and futile appeal.
Radio Nottingham, its programmes at first confined to medium wave transmission and a Rediffusion cable distribution area , only slowly gained popularity. However it had by the late 1970s , when made available on FM frequency , become a substantially staffed and respected high quality broadcaster.
Unfortunately the eventual advent of commercial radio ( in Nottingham the station was Radio Trent ) significantly reduced and changed the BBC satellite station's audience . When declined national economic fortunes forced the BBC to significantly reduce the budgets of its local radio stations Radio Nottingham's programming suffered consequently. Any hope of service improvement was stifled and a continuous decline began.
New broadcaster, Radio Trent, found the economic climate of the late 1970s and early 1980s too difficult to sustain its initial programming intentions and was taken over. Soon the new company met difficulties and required re-founding. Later, its station name was changed to Trent FM.
However in due time it reverted to the name Radio Trent before becoming part of the nationwide Capital Radio organisation.
Capital Radio had been originally licensed as a commercial radio service for the London area.
Surprisingly a service using the name Radio Trent does now exist in the Nottingham area . A small on-line only enterprise that had hoped to be known by the name Radio Trent has been able to conclude an agreement with THISISGLOBAL, an arm of the Capital Radio company to legally license the rights to the name Radio Trent.
As for the above photograph although it is now decades since its York Street golden era studios were vacated, on the intercom at the old street door remains the name Radio Nottingham . The intercom Is a relic of the years when a very popular radio station served the city from that place : a time when many a celebrity would press its yellow buzzer button .

Intelligent Audio, Wireless & Power Control
• Aux 1 - Intelligent Audio Input - designed for Bike-to-Bike •
Both rider and passenger can use an optional bike-to-bike radio connected to the hub, activated via the I-VOX system, providing easy and safe hands free use without losing the rider to passenger communications or any other functions. If you bike power your hub you can also bike power recommended bike-to-bike radios. Take advantage of the optional handlebar remote control to disable the VOX transmit mode providing privacy for rider-to-passenger communications, and then transmit bike-to-bike messages at any time by either pressing the press-to-talk (PTT) button, or toggle back to the normal VOX transmit mode. When the phone is in use and disables the VOX transmit function, the remote control PTT button lets you over-ride this so that you can transmit to other bikes even when on the phone. Incoming bike to bike audio on Aux 1 on either hub automatically reduces the stereo music level on both hubs Aux 4 to 50% to improve speech clarity.
• Aux 2 - Intelligent Audio Input - designed for Stereo GPS •
A GPS can be connected to the hub using an optional interface lead to suit, or if your GPS unit transmits Bluetooth, by using the optional integral stereo Bluetooth wireless interface. Incoming GPS audio on Aux 2 automatically reduces the stereo music on Aux 4 by 50% for improved GPS clarity. Note; you can use some phones via some GPS units, but in most cases you lose the important GPS audio and safety camera warnings while using the phone through a GPS. This is why we provide separate GPS stereo connectivity and separate phone connectivity to manage this better for you.

We recommend using the optional remote PTT if using a bike-to-bike radio, so that you can manually disable the VOX transmit mode when the passenger is using their phone.

Connects into Aux 2, 3,4 or 5. Each of the stereo Bluetooth modules lets you connect wirelessly to one or two Bluetooth devices, so long as one is using hands free profile (such as a mobile phone or GPS, etc) and the other uses advanced audio profile (A2DP, such as stereo devices, mp3 players, etc). The twin Bluetooth module lets you connect to between 1 and 4 Bluetooth devices. The Pittock Mansion was home to Portland pioneers Henry and Georgiana Pittock from 1914 to 1919. During the late 1800s and the early 1900s, their lives and work paralleled the growth of Portland from a small Northwest town site to a thriving city with a quarter million population. With its eclectic architectural design and richly decorated interior, including family artifacts, the Pittock Mansion stands today as a living memorial of this family’s contributions to the blossoming of Portland and its people.
English-born Henry Lewis Pittock journeyed on a wagon train from Pennsylvania to Oregon in 1853 where, at the young age of 19, and in his own words, “barefoot and penniless,” he began working for Thomas Jefferson Dryer’s Weekly Oregonian newspaper. In 1860, at the age of 26, he married 15-year-old Georgiana Martin Burton of Missouri. Six years prior, Georgiana had crossed the plains from Keokuk, Iowa to Oregon Territory with her parents. Georgiana’s father E.M. Burton was a flour mill owner and one of early Portland’s well known building contractors.
Together, Henry and Georgiana began a long life of work, community service, and devotion to family, which would last 58 years and celebrate six children and eighteen grandchildren.
A consummate businessman, Henry Pittock took ownership of the Weekly Oregonian in 1860, changing its format to the daily paper we read today. He went on to build an empire incorporating real estate, banking, railroads, steamboats, sheep ranching, silver mining, and the pulp and paper industry.
Georgiana dedicated herself to improving the lives of the community’s women and children. She helped found the Ladies Relief Society in 1867, whose Children’s Home provided care, food, and shelter for needy children. Georgiana also worked with the Woman’s Union, and played a key role in building the Martha Washington Home for single, working women.
The couple was known for their quiet reserve, helpful demeanor, and love for the outdoors. Georgiana cherished gardening, and kept a terraced flower garden at the mansion covered with every kind of flower imaginable. She frequently adorned her house with cut flowers, and is recognized for originating the tradition of Portland’s annual Rose Festival.
A vigorous outdoorsman, Henry rode horses in the Rose Festival parades, and was a member of the first party to climb Mt. Hood, one of the spectacular peaks visible from the mansion. On one of his climbing expeditions, someone suggested that the group sit down and rest, at which point Henry responded, “The man who sits down never reaches the top.”
Henry and Georgiana were at the pinnacle of their successful lives when they commissioned architect Edward Foulkes to design and build their new home overlooking Portland, the city they loved.
They began planning and designing their new home in 1909. The mansion was completed in 1914, replete with stunningly progressive features including a central vacuum system, intercoms, and indirect lighting. The house also creatively incorporated Turkish, English, and French designs. In keeping with their loyalty to their home state, the Pittocks hired Oregon craftsmen and artisans, and used Northwest materials to build the house. The final estate included the mansion, a three-car garage, a greenhouse, and the Italianate gate lodge servants’ residence, all situated on 46 acres of land almost 1,000 feet above downtown Portland.
At 80 and 68 respectively, Henry and Georgiana moved to their new home. The hard-working couple who had lived in the heart of Portland as it developed from a forest clearing to a bustling business center, now resided high in the hills, with a breathtaking vista of their beloved Portland. It was a warm and gracious house for both the adults and children of the family.
Georgiana died in 1918 at the age of 72, and Henry in 1919 at 84. The Pittock family remained in residence at the mansion until 1958, when Peter Gantenbein, a Pittock grandson who had been born in the house, put the estate on the market.
The threat of demolition at the hands of land developers, and the extensive damage caused by a storm in 1962, brought concerned citizens together to raise funds to preserve the site. Seeing this popular support, and agreeing that the house had tremendous value as a unique historic resource, the City of Portland purchased the estate in 1964 for $225,000. Fifteen months were spent restoring it. The mansion opened to the public in 1965, and has been a community landmark ever since.
A house of historical significance and visual magnificence, the Pittock Mansion today offers us a uniquely personal opportunity to peek into the past, and study our world as it was - from the viewpoint of one Portland family
