This is the mental health display that was behind the one for depression. The first wall you see behind the main sign is dedicated to dispersing stigmas. I want to bring this up because that is another thing a lot of these displays are dedicated too. Destroying the stigmas behind these disabilities.

While the superhero may not be present, these green arrows really save the day when navigating all the tutorials and Virtual Ability Island.

The Official Trailer is Here!

Introducing a fresh approach to history education, designed for today’s digital generation.

Past that blue sign is a square walk through of the history of disability. They have one on the other side of the island as well, but I think this one has more information, whereas the other one is mainly just pictures. It's so important for them to have this here. For someone who has a disability, it's not important only for them to be knowledgeable in their disability, but to be well versed in their history as well.

A larger section of the island is dedicated to mental health. In fact, that yellow section behind the circle dedicated to depression is the mental health information center. All of these places of information are incredibly thorough, and best all of they give you more places to get information, or to even get help.

Perhaps my favorite tutorial on the Island is the in The Butterfly Room and Aviary. Not only is it just really pretty to look at, it's where you learn how to fly. It's a great tutorial and I can imagine that, for people with disabilities, this is a great asset to be able to have on second life.

Embodied Social Presence Theory is what they call it. As I was reading through it, the 7 characteristics we talked about last unit came into my mind. The sense of self, the death of distance, all of these things that are good for us in Second Life can become that much more meaningful and useful to someone with a disability.

Most of the land on the health and wellness side of the island are dedicated to these healthy living displays. There are ones on mental health, there are ones support, there is a pavilion dedicated to medical research. There are so many helpful and useful displays. I will be going through just a few.

The tutorials that I went through and thought were very thorough and helpful are just the beginning. Virtual Ability Island is working on more advanced tutorials.

More information is the favorite phrase on Virtual Ability Island. This is the last panel of the information on depression in the circle that you just saw. It offers not only more information, but support as well. None of these informative pavilions offer self diagnosis or treatments but they will point you in the right direction.

There are so many tutorials on this island that they need a map to show you them all. There are tutorials on how to change your appearance, how to use chat, how to use speak, how to fly, anything you could possibly need to know to start your second life.

You see the three signs for real life information for Virtual Ability, inc. Here is the giant sign for Second Life information. This sign goes over what is on the island and how things on the island work and are set up.

This is a snapshot from the history of disability on the other side of the island. It's more of an art piece than an informational piece, but it gets the point across.

There are a lot of places to meet and discuss on the island, but this is the biggest (and the prettiest) . Overall, I think there may be five or six places to meet on the island. This is over on the Second Life tutorial slide, and that big screen up there is actually talking about people with disabilities using Second Life.

The island is a lot bigger than it seems at first, and after spending a long amount of time just exploring the tutorials and all of the general information about second life I finally realized there was a whole other side to the island with even more information. And that's my tour!!

Virtual Ability Island isn't just a good resource for those with disabilities. It's also a good source for graduate students and pre-doctoral students who are wishing to further their research when it comes to disabilities and therapy concerning these disabilities.

After going through the tutorials where avatars can get free clothes and learn how to talk and chat, there is a large section of the island dedicated to large PowerPoints discussing groups, clothing and society in Second Life. It's a great addition to the tutorials already available on the island.

A little to the left of the welcome sign in the very center of Virtual Ability island there are these three giant boards with the island's mission and more about it's real life counterparts. Virtual Ability Island is owned by Virtual Ability, inc., a non-profit company in Colorado. It also links to their website: VirtualAbility.org/. At this website you can sign up to become a member, see an overview of their past and ongoing projects, make a donation, read press releases, or even contact them.

I added this picture for the support groups because I want to underline the fact that not all of these groups are in English. Through Second Life Virtual Ability, inc. has created an international web of support.

This giant square path that you see in front of you are just some of the support groups available through Second Life. They are split up into sections like, mental health, cancer survivors, deafness, etc.

Where the first side of the island is dedicated to tutorials and information about second life in general, the other half of the island is dedicated to information about health and medical information. This side of the island you can find information on any disability or chronic illness you could want. If you can't? They want you to contact them so they can.

Luis Felipe Gutierrez, Spanish Conquistador, the New World (Modern Day, Peru), 1537 CE

"He was strolling through the jungle; he had to reach the other side of the mountains. Luis knew that he faced a long journey to reach the last outpost of the Spanish Empire - at the edge of civilization, where the map fell off into legend. It was the Anno Domini 1537, and Luis Felipe Guiterrez had arrived in the New World the year before, sent by his majesty Charles V to help his fellow countrymen complete the conquest of the land we now call Peru. The world he encountered now was nothing like he'd expected..."

The timeline on the other side of the island focuses on the Disability Rights movement, but where the other timeline has note cards and slides explaining the history, this one is mostly art and statement pieces.

This island was created in 2007 to help people with all types of disabilities. According to their note card at least 75 percent of their members have one or more disabilities, whether they are physical, mental, emotional, or sensory). The rest of the group are caregivers, but I'll get more into that later.
