I was out for a stroll the other morning when I spotted this Snowy Egret, looking suspiciously like a very fancy feathered detective, absolutely stalking its breakfast across a pond.
My first, deeply profound thought? "Well, at least he doesn't have to eat with those muddy feet!" A true gentleman of the wetland, indeed—keeping his hands (or should I say, beak?) clean for the main event.
The Snowy Egret is a medium-sized, highly elegant heron, instantly recognizable by its immaculate, all-white plumage set off by striking color contrasts.
Its most distinctive features are its long, slender black legs that terminate in brilliant yellow feet—a feature that often makes it look like it's wading on "golden slippers."
This bird has a long, delicate black bill and a yellow patch of skin in front of its eye, which intensifies during the breeding season. During this time, the egret is at its most exquisite, sporting fine, lacy, recurved plumes on its head, neck, and back—plumes that were once so coveted for the fashion industry that the species was nearly hunted to extinction.
A dynamic and active forager, the Snowy Egret is often seen using its bright feet to stir up the mud or water in shallow wetlands, marshes, and ponds, flushing out small aquatic prey like fish, crabs, and insects before swiftly spearing them with its bill.

The red-backed shrike (Lanius collurio) or red-backed shrike (also red-backed shrike)[1] is a species of bird from the shrike family (Laniidae) and is the most common shrike species in Central Europe. It is best known for its behavior of impaling prey on thorns.
Its diet mainly consists of large insects, but also small mammals and birds. Native to much of Europe and western Asia, it breeds in semi-open landscapes that have a good supply of hedges and shrubs. The nests are preferably built in thorn bushes. Due to the intensification of agriculture, the red-backed shrike had to accept large population losses in Central Europe in the second half of the 20th century. The migratory bird winters in southern Africa.

It just occurred to me that this day’s sequence of photographs roughly narrates the course of a typical day photographing these subjects at this time of year. The ideal day starts before sunrise in thick fog. The fog becomes lighter and takes on the colors of dawn if things work just right. Eventually the fog thins and gradually the light becomes brighter and more directional. Before too long the fog dissipates and I’m left with the common atmospheric haze of winter, which softens the landscape even as the colors intensify after the fog leaves.
I was hours into photographing this location when I got to these trees. Although it was still cold, the sun was shining confidently through the midday haze. The atmosphere was still a bit soft, but the fall colors were intensifying. I initially stopped here to photograph a bird perched at the top of one of the trees, but soon the bird left and I went into landscape mode.

Photo Finish play by Peter Ustinov offers an intense experience of peeking through the pinhole to be thrilled by life memory recollection and resentment. The delusion is immensely intensified by the frailty of the main actor and narrowed vision field of opera glasses.

'Christopher Lockyear, the secretary-general of Doctors Without Borders (MSF), has denounced Israel’s intensifying assault on Gaza City, calling on the world to act urgently to secure a ceasefire.
For many in Gaza City, escape is impossible, he wrote.
They include those who are elderly, critically ill, heavily pregnant, or wounded. People left behind have been “handed a death sentence”, while those who flee are doing so under intensifying bombardment, Lockyear said.
“Those who survive the journey will reach overcrowded areas in central and southern Gaza where they will find neither safety nor the basics they need to exist. A population pushed to the brink by almost two years of extreme brutality faces catastrophe,” he continued.
“What is happening in Gaza is not just a humanitarian catastrophe, it is the systematic destruction of a people. MSF is clear: Israel is committing genocide against Palestinians in Gaza, and doing so with absolute impunity.”, www.aljazeera.com/news/liveblog/2025/9/16/live-israel-pou... ▪️ Israel is a complete copy of. what happened in Germany... www.www.facebook.com/reel/811763111177352/?mibextid=rS40aB7S9... ▪️An Edenva/ Yr Edenfa/ The Eden Project, Kernow/ Cernyw/ Cornwall

This doesn't have the composition or feel of the last upload, but I thought I would include it as it shows more of the landscape (including the cottage we stayed in on the left - highly recommended).
Sprouting forest on the mountain slope in Miasa (美麻) located several km north of Yasaka. It is a typical Satoyama (里山) where the forest has been maintained by local people to exploit firewoods and edible plants.
Blooming trees are Yamazakura (Japanese mountain cherry, Cerasus jamasakura). It is a shade intolerant plant that grows when tall trees were felled for firewood. They reduced in number as the use of firewoods declines.
The dark coloured conifer trees are Sugi (Japanese cedar, Cryptomeria japonica) and the sprouting light coloured conifer trees are Karamatsu (Japanese cedar, Larix kaempferi). They are postwar afforestation to cope with the scarcity of construction material. It is unpopular these days for disturbing the original vegetation of Satoyama and nature areas and intensifying pollen allergies.
Other trees include Akamatsu (Japanese red pine, Pinus densiflora), Mizunara (Quercus crispula) etc.
The stark contrast between light and dark creates a captivating visual narrative, as the man emerges into a world of illumination. The high contrast further intensifies the sense of drama and adds a touch of mystique to the scene.
Kodak Portra 800 f/16 6s
Overexposed Portra 800 unleashes some wild colours. Portra 800 has more colour saturation than Portra 400 to start with, and both intensify with moderate overexposure of about 1 stop. This was taken about 20min before sunrise with a 1.5 stop ND centre filter for uniformity. Metered at ISO 400 (+1) and exposure further increased 50% for reciprocity failure.
And pareidolia: cats sometimes look like clouds and clouds sometimes look like cats…
Cropped to get tighter focus. Then used normal oil painting effect at 70%. Then, on that same screen, used the overlay setting for the first time, which intensified all the colors. Finished with a wider mosaic border.

Took a chance bicycling into a light drizzle this afternoon. Oftentimes these gambles pay off as the rain dissipates or at least does not intensify. Today was not one of those times. It began to pour once I was well past the point of a quick return to home, or even a hint of shelter. In moments like this, I tend to focus on the environment more than my own comfort. Once you are soaked, you can't get any wetter. Might as well appreciate the atmosphere. I love the darkening of the sky during heavy rain, and the general decrease in visual acuity. Everything you see is through a curtain of raindrops, an altered perspective that exists only in the moment. The rain today felt harder and harsher than the summer rains I've been caught out in. It's that proverbial hostile takeover that occurs as summer fades into autumn. I still recall how good the summer rain felt on my skin during a hot July afternoon. Today's rain on the other hand made me feel shivery and cold, But for now I am embracing the discomfort. My approach is to throw myself into each season as we enter it.

UK Linnet numbers fell sharply between the late-1960s and the late-1980s. Since then, the decline has slowed, but the overall population trend is still on a downward trajectory. This negative trend is thought to be linked to increased nest failure associated with agricultural intensification

I photographed this Tree Sparrow at Welney in Norfolk where a few could be seen moving low and further away than the bolder House Sparrows with which they mixed. Reputed to be shyer, this was the only shot I managed of this once widespread bird whose decline is similar to that of other farmland birds due to intensification of agriculture and use of herbicides and insecticides as well as loss of insect rich wetlands, seeds, grain and insects being their main source of food.
Thank you all for your kind responses,
A 10 second exposure with a ND8 taken from the south pier wall at Cullercoats Bay 20 minutes before sunrise. The colour in the sky intensified towards sunrise - that was the only 'warmth' around as it was only 1 degree at the time!
The Gulf Stream proper is a western-intensified current, driven largely by wind stress. The North Atlantic Drift, in contrast, is largely thermohaline circulation–driven. In 1958 the oceanographer Henry Stommel noted that "very little water from the Gulf of Mexico is actually in the Stream". By carrying warm water northeast across the Atlantic, it makes Western and especially Northern Europe warmer than it otherwise would be.

Follow the eerie path of Fall trees intensified by creepy mist, bats, bones, spiders, ghosts and inclement weather. Turn to midnight and have your sound on to immerse yourself in this spooky excursion. Approaching the house you will encounter a beware sign, this is your last warning! This haunted house is not for the faint of heart. Haunting footsteps as you approach the keeper at the entrance. Entering there is a spell library to your left, and disturbing dining to your right. Again, warning before you go upstairs! Disturbing images of horrific endings may not be appropriate for some guests. Exit quickly through the green house to the right, but not too quickly to grab your $1 gifts along the way. Find lots of spooky buys, and gifts to decorate your own Halloween projects.
This is a photo taken in the '80s, which was scanned in to create a digital file, is of a fierce winter storm on Lake Ontario in late December.
As it intensified, spray covered and froze on trees along the shore, causing some of the saplings to snap off. The wind blew for more than 24 hours.

Hehh-hehh-hehh-hehh… HHhhhehhh…
Evil laughter echoes through the trees of the forest as an unfortunate traveler wanders down a narrow path, trying to cross it.
His car had broken down, and his phone had no signal, leaving him no choice but to make his way on foot to the next town.
As he quickens his pace, the laughter grows louder and more sinister.
He tries to look away, but through the branches of a bush he sees them.
Glowing white eyes dazzle him.
Sharp, long teeth peek out from a wide smile drawn across the hyena’s face.
Fear grips the traveler, and he breaks into a desperate run.
A futile attempt that only makes the laughter intensify.
The hyenas could get him anytime they wanted, but that wasn’t fun enough.
Like children toying with their prey, they delight in watching him struggle to escape.
They feed on the fear their victims develop while being chased.
The traveler’s heart pounds like a drum in his chest.
Branches whip against his face and arms as he runs blindly through the dense underbrush.
The sinister laughter follows him, bouncing off the trees like a dark melody.
Suddenly, a low growl rumbles behind him. He dares a glance over his shoulder. Two glowing eyes lock onto his, closer than before. The hyenas are closing in, their jaws snapping with hunger.
He tries with all his remaining stamina to run faster, but exhaustion begins to weigh him down.
His foot catches on a root. He stumbles, crashing to the forest floor.
The laughter erupts into a chorus of cruel delight.
As the pack surrounds him, the traveler closes his eyes and covers himself—an instinctive reflex seeking protection.
He feels the hyenas slowly getting closer and closer.
At that moment, he realizes all he has done was in vain; there is only one thing he can do.
He prays for a miracle.
Nothing else can save him after all.

This is the center of a tulip, and I intentionally brought up the saturation to intensify the color a bit. Those brown specks look like noise, but they are really pollen particles. I thought that the yellow center looked like a sunrise.
A grim start to the day today. :-( Having said that I always love the way the rain intensifies the contrast of colours in my garden. Nothing else to do but to sit back, drink tea and watch. :-)
One of the most important inventions of the late 19th century was the invention of the snow globe. It was achieved by the Viennese surgical instrument mechanic Erwin Perzy.
"Originally his goal was to develop an extra bright lightsource for use as a surgical lamp. As he tried to intensify the candlepower of a so-called Schusterkugel (a water-filled flask used to focus light since the Middle Ages) with particles made out of different materials for reflection purpose, the effect reminded him of snowfall. He then built his first scene globe with a model of the basilica of Mariazell. Because of the great demand for his snow globes, Perzy and his brother Ludwig opened a shop in Vienna, where the production continues until today as a family business exporting throughout the world. The material and methods used to make the particles for Perzy globes is a family production secret." en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Snow_globe

The Shrine Church of St. Stanislaus is one of the hidden architectural gems in Cleveland's inner city. The church was built in the style of the great cathedrals of Europe, and is absolutely sumptuous in terms of its visual appeal.

Sometimes you've got to show off just to survive at the San Louis National Wildlife Refuge. That's especially true if you own a dismembered craw-dad.
The final submission from my recent Glen Afric sunrise trip. As the sun continued to rise, the light it cast directly onto the trees on the left bank of Loch Beinn a' Mheadhoin effected an intense saturation of the autumnal colours. I liked the contrast this created with the more subdued and pastel colours of the sky, water, and unlit trees to the right.
Japan’s attack on Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941, led the United States into World War II. The attack intensified racial prejudices and led to widespread fear of potential sabotage and espionage by Japanese Americans.
In February, 1942, President Franklin D. Roosevelt signed Executive Order 9066,which authorized the Secretary of War to establish Military Areas and to remove from those areas anyone who might be a threat to the war effort. Without due process, the government gave everyone of Japanese ancestry living on the West coast only days to decide what to do with their houses, farms, businesses, and other possessions. Most families sold their belongings at a significant loss.
Each family was assigned an identification number and loaded into cars, buses, trucks, and trains, taking only what they could carry. Japanese Americans were transported under military guard to 17 temporary assembly centers in Washington, Oregon, California, and Arizona. Then they were moved to one of ten hastily built relocation centers, including this one at Manzanar. By November, 1942, the relocation was complete.
Thanks for stopping by and for all of your kind comments, awards and faves -- I appreciate them all.

A late June Storm Chase with fellow chaser Myles Nelson in the Eastern Plains of Colorado. Which would eventually takes us into Kansas and back into Nebraska.
We never did catch a tornado due the RFD getting undercut. Simply meaning that it wouldn't produce just south of Yuma Colorado via Hwy 59. Once the storm became outflow dominate it was picture perfect. We had made several stops on Hwy 36 Eastbound. Beautiful structure close to Kirk Colorado and south of Wray. Pure Storm chasing eye candy!!!
Once we got into Kansas by St. Francis and Bird City we were loosing light fast but the it was picture perfect for viewing this incredible storm cell.
We had a long drive back after the last light of the day and this storm was to intensify. It did, making our trip back a little more interesting than expected. This part is not on video, but we became the hunted as this storm really intensified. There was so much lighting being fired off we could see for miles and miles as the storm was picking up steam and moving to the northeast. Relentlessly following us on our heals ever inch of the way back we were getting concerned about out safely. Once we turned east via Hwy 89 back into the southwest portion of Nebraska, we came face to face with a Tornado on the ground close to Wilsonville and another possible one north of Beaver City. That was not in the plan for that evening and it definitely got our attention.
