The linnet can be seen on farmland and heathland across the UK. But, like so many other farmland birds, linnets are declining rapidly, mainly due to agricultural intensification. Info: The Wildlife Trusts.

Many thanks to people who view or comment on my photos.

Widespread and common throughout Britain and Ireland. The Gatekeeper is generally smaller and more orange with a row of tiny white dots on the hind underwings.

The Meadow Brown is the most abundant butterfly species in many habitats. Hundreds may be seen together at some sites, flying low over the vegetation. Adults fly even in dull weather when most other butterflies are inactive.

Regional variations in the spotting pattern on the wings have led to it being studied extensively by geneticists over many years. Larger forms occur in Ireland and the north of Scotland.

It is one of our most widespread species, but many colonies have been lost due to agricultural intensification.

wide range of grasses are used. Those with finer leaves such as fescues (Festuca spp.), bents (Agrostis spp.) and meadow- grasses (Poa spp.) are preferred, but some coarser species such as Cock's- foot (Dactylis glomerata), Downy Oat-grass (Helictotrichon pubescens), and False Brome (Brachypodium sylvaticum) are also eaten by larger larvae. Other species of grass are also believed to be used.

Wingspan: 4.0-6.0cm

The Bobolink breeds in the summer in Northern USA and in Canada. They winter in southern South America, primarily Paraguay, Argentina, and Bolivia. Bobolink populations are rapidly declining due to numerous factors, such as agricultural intensification and habitat loss; they are considered threatened in Canada, and are at risk throughout their range.

Les populations de Goglu des prés déclinent rapidement en raison de nombreux facteurs, tels que l'intensification de l'agriculture et la perte d'habitat; ils sont considérés comme menacés au Canada et sont en péril dans toute leur aire de répartition.

Redstart (M) - Phoenicuros Phoenicuros

The common redstart (Phoenicurus phoenicurus), or often simply redstart, is a small passerine bird in the redstart genus Phoenicurus. Like its relatives, it was formerly classed as a member of the thrush family, (Turdidae), but is now known to be an Old World flycatcher (family Muscicapidae).

Common redstarts prefer open mature birch and oak woodland with a high horizontal visibility and low amounts of shrub and understorey especially where the trees are old enough to have holes suitable for its nest. They prefer to nest on the edge of woodland clearings. In Britain it occurs primarily in upland areas less affected by agricultural intensification, but further east in Europe also commonly in lowland areas, including parks and old gardens in urban areas. They nest in natural tree holes, so dead trees or those with dead limbs are beneficial to the species; nestboxes are sometimes used. A high cover of moss and lichen is also preferred. They also use mature open conifer woodland, particularly in the north of the breeding range. Management to thin out the trees is thus favoured.

In England, where it has declined by 55% in the past 25 years, the Forestry Commission offers grants under a scheme called England's Woodland Improvement Grant (EWIG); as does Natural Englands Environmental Stewardship Scheme. It is a very rare and irregular breeding bird in Ireland, with between one and five pairs breeding in most years, mainly in County Wicklow.

It is a summer visitor throughout most of Europe and western Asia (east to Lake Baikal), and also in northwest Africa in Morocco. It winters in central Africa and Arabia, south of the Sahara Desert but north of the Equator, from Senegal east to Yemen. It is widespread as a breeding bird in Great Britain, particularly in upland broadleaf woodlands and hedgerow trees, but in Ireland it is very local, and may not breed every year.

The males first arrive in early to mid April, often a few days in advance of the females. Five or six light blue eggs are laid during May, with a second brood in mid summer in the south of the breeding range. It departs for Africa between mid-August and early October. It often feeds like a flycatcher, making aerial sallies after passing insects, and most of its food consists of winged insects. The call is chat-like and the alarm a plaintive single note, wheet, like that of many other chats.

The male’s song is similar to that of the Robin, but never more than a prelude, since it has an unfinished, feeble ending.

Thanks to all who take the time to Comment/fav etc, It is always appreciated.

BNSF 9009 leads a coal train out of Monument, CO and away from a severe thunderstorm that's intensifying a few miles to the north.

A few moments before the train arrived, a scud cloud was visible down toward the ground making things look more ominous than they actually were. This storm put out some strong gusts and dropped some decent hail along the Palmer Divide, but despite some rotation as it moved east, it didn't spawn any tornadoes.

JokulsaaFjollum, or the glacial river in the mountains, has always been one of the longest rivers in Iceland and even in Europe. It comes from the Vatnajokull and goes north through the Holuhraun and the sandur to then be spanned by the bridge of road number 1. It is characterized by a length of 206 kilometers, a basin of 7750km² and a flow of 183m³ / sec. North of Vatnajokull, it passes through a moor, slightly sloping plateaus. Its current intensifies on the edges of the mountains, where powerful waterfalls flow into the canyon. Along its route, the river has carved several pits in the lower layers of the mountains and to the west it tumbles down from a high barrier, constituting the breathtaking fountain of Dettifoss. The latter immerses itself in magnificent deep gorges, carved by this mighty watercourse and reaches the river bridge of road number 85.

on this day eleven years ago, we drove out of Death Valley. It was a glorious morning, there had been some rain, which really helped to intensify the colours of the scenery.

I waited under a shelter at EH Young Park near Riverside, Mo. as an early morning storm rolled into the area. As it drew closer the lightning intensified.

Just recently spent a few days over in New Brighton on the Wirral. I had chance to catch up with my good friend Ray McBride who has been a great mentor to me, for some time now.

This capture was taken last night, at my favourite Perch Rock Lighthouse (New Brighton)

We got a lovely band of colour, running along the horizon, which intensified in colour as the sun disappeared.

It was an incoming tide and as you can see, the Long Exposure I used gave the water that lovely misty feel.

This is the entrance to the river Mersey and the docks can be seen to the right.

We actually watched the new P&O's largest cruise ship, the Britannia, sail past the Lighthouse this morning, on her tour around the country.

It was late in the day, and the sun was setting east of her location, as she began to sing her melody, the raze of the sun intensified, and so did she.

In 2012 the lightning-caused High Park Fire burned 140 square miles and destroyed more than 250 homes in the foothills near Fort Collins, Colorado. Such large, catastrophic wildfires are increasing in the western United States – and now globally – due to a warming, drying climate and intensifying human activity in our forestlands. Environmental and economic impacts of these wildfires are felt locally as forests and homes are destroyed – and universally as smoke and carbon dioxide spread throughout our shared atmosphere. Tackling climate change is a key challenge for the future of humanity and the welfare and biodiversity of Planet Earth.

A project to reintroduce the Bearded Vulture, also known as the Lammergeier, to the Alps began in 1986 with the first birds being released in the Kruml valley. Despite several hundred birds being released, breeding successes in Austria have so far been poor. Figures show a high loss of adult birds and a high mortality rate. Lead poisoning has been identified as a key factor. That is why initiatives to promote lead-free rifle ammunition were started and monitoring has been intensified.

This is a captive bird.

The lake (not actually, read below) is barely visible between the impressive geology around it. Sadly a recent wildfire's scar can be seen across the river along the road to Maligne Lake.

"Medicine Lake is a geologic anomaly in the sense that it is not actually a lake but rather an area in which the Maligne River (flowing from Maligne Lake into the Athabasca River) backs up and suddenly disappears underground as a losing stream. During the summer months during intensified meltwater runoff the lake fills to levels which fluctuate over time and with the runoff events. Much like a bathtub that is filled too fast for it to drain, it becomes laden with water (lake) until it can slowly drain as the tap flow (runoff) is reduced (river). The underground system is extensive and during the 1970s researchers used a biodegradable dye to determine the underground river's extent. The dye showed up in many of the lakes and rivers in the area to the point where it became clear that the underground system was one of the most extensive in the world."

Colorwise, this is an intensified and impressionistic version of what I saw.

I know I'm biased (I was born here), but this is such a cool city to photograph. Love the way that the light and sky play off of the buildings.

Yes - I intensified the colors in the sky - but those were the colors. All the colors of the rainbow, starting at the horizon and progressing upward. I am curious if this is a normal occurrence.

Walking in our neighborhood in Autumn is a real treat. The leaves are constantly changing their colors, as if an artist has been at work at night. Arriving back home, I placed this leaf against the window to allow the sunlight to intensify the colors. That's when I saw the tiny tear in the leaf....a perfect door for tiny bugs to crawl through.

Gorgeous autumn at The Hermitage in Scotland. The colours were truly starting to intensify around the time when we visited.

And this I dreamt, and this I dream,

And some time this I will dream again,

And all will be repeated, all be re-embodied,

You will dream everything I have seen in dream.

To one side from ourselves, to one side from the world

Wave follows wave to break on the shore,

On each wave is a star, a person, a bird,

Dreams, reality, death - on wave after wave.

No need for a date: I was, I am, and I will be,

Life is a wonder of wonders, and to wonder

I dedicate myself, on my knees, like an orphan,

Alone - among mirrors - fenced in by reflections:

Cities and seas, iridescent, intensified.

A mother in tears takes a child on her lap.

Every day there are disasters in the world, wars, earthquakes, tornadoes, droughts, floods ----

There is no news of good news, or at least, they are less and less resonant ----

A nice and certain news is that there will be a sunset and dawn every day, for those who want to turn their gaze, and this comfort me ....

Thanks for your recent visits, favorites, comments and invitations. I go slow, but everything is very much appreciated, as always....

Wells Nevada, sunset intensified by smoke from California wildfires

Medicine Lake situated in Jasper National Park, is according to Wikipedia, not actually a lake but a sort of collection basin which the Maligne River flows into from Maligne Lake. The river disappears underground and when it ultimately surfaces, it flows into the Athabasca River. During the summer months when there is intensified meltwater runoff the basin fills and voila it appears to be a lake; the basin fills up quicker than it can drain. When the runoff is reduced, the lake starts to drain.

(Quelle: Wikipedia)

The first works on the subway station „Überseequartier“ in open coverage type had already begun in the beginning of 2007. The entry of VERAs cutterhead from harbour city into the stop Jungfernstieg for the first tunnel occurred October 13, 2009, second December 3, 2010. In summer 2010, the interior finish of the subway station began.

As a permanent art installation, angular loudspeakers are located beside the moving stairs with every lamp, from which sea rushing and other maritime sounds reach the ears, in order to intensify acoustically the optical "underwater impression" of the wall covering becoming darker with increasing depth. Genoa Nervi: Gropallo tower on the Anita Garibaldi promenade

The Gropallo tower, formerly also known as the Hay tower due to the wet hay that was burned on the top of the tower to produce smoke and signal dangers, takes its name from the Marquis Gaetano Gropallo, creator of the walk, who bought it in the middle of the 19th century.

The construction of the tower dates back to the mid-sixteenth century, and was part of the defensive system built due to the intensification of attacks by the Corsairs of Dragut, but over the centuries it has been modified and restored several times.

In 1936 the tower was purchased by the municipality of Genoa.

"Friendship makes prosperity more shining and lessens adversity by dividing and sharing it."

~ Cicero

(January 3, 106 BC – December 7, 43 BC)

When something wonderful happens to us, it may not seem real until we can tell our friends about it. Their happiness for us deepens and intensifies our pleasure.

When something bad happens to us, we search out our friends for comfort, understanding and assurance. Their sympathy eases our pain and gives us hope.

Knowing how much friendship means to us, how can we be better friends to others in their times of prosperity and adversity? I am going to try to be the best friend I can be to the people who bring so much into my life....beginning with some long overdue testimonials I need to write. I have procrastinated long enough!

Here's an interesting tidbit about rhododendrons: The world "Rhododendron" comes from the Greek words: rhodos, "rose", and dendron, "tree".

Crinkly, wrinkly leafy.

Ok. Find leaf in the garden; dry it, one week; place on a table in a darkened room; light from low right with LED torch; take a photo with a camera.

Easy right? Huh….

How clueless could one be? No… that’s not fair on mankind... How clueless could I be?

Ah well. This is about where I gave up with this little project for the Macro Mondays group’s Crinkly, Wrinkly… theme. I absolutely refused to go back an photograph the desperate thing again....

A focus stack of seven images; sharpened with every known technique known to man (Unsharp thingy, Clarity, HighPass/Linear Light)... and a few others too…hue shifted slightly right to intensify the reds; colour zapped by steepening the A and B ramps in LAB Mode Curves; denoise; dark vignette…

I’ll leave it to my much-abused leaf-worn viewer to guess the tree that spawned this ;-)

It's one inch across.

Is there a Macro Mondays therapy group anywhere?

Thank you for taking time to look. I hope you enjoy what you see (just don’t zoom OK?). Happy Macro Mondays all those who survived. :)

I have intensified the colors in image post-processing. The blue color is due to solar rays scattered to the moon by the earth's atmosphere that scatters more at the short wavelength portion of the solar spectrum. The other colors are probably close to the actual colors of regions on the moon.

Cowtail Stingrays are a common sight, feeding in the shallows off western Australia and Indo-Pacific region. They are harder to see than you might think - I have intensified the colour and contrast of the image on the left, otherwise they just look like shadows under the water. They have an extremely painful sting, very rarely fatal, and only sting when attacked. My wife did actually tread on one (they are that hard to see through the water) but they both fled in opposite directions, no harm done! For the shot on the right, I held a waterproof camera under the surface, but it was impossible to see anything on the screen, hence the poor framing - but they are a beautiful orange brown colour.

Benjamin Franklin theorized that the "mystery of the Northern Lights" was caused by a concentration of electrical charges in the polar regions intensified by the snow and other moisture.
